Agreeing the warm-up was in itself a tough call. Several late night meetings dragged on til dawn as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas refused to budge on using 'Back-2-Back drawing', and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman demanded they play 'Pin the Tail on the Palestinian'. Barak, a leading moderate voice in the government, eventually stepped in and brokered the deal.

Before the events of this past and continuing weeks, the Labor Party of Israel had the lowest poll ratings ever. Ehud Barak the leader of this party was considered as useless and was even thought be replaced even before the February elections.
Now as air raids continued for the 12th straight day in the smoke filled skies of Gaza above and blood drenched soil of Gaza below, the Labor Party rose higher in the polls, as public opinion turned around.
But there are some questions and facts which are rather questionable or raises suspicion.
Even though the recent events do not show it but Barak was rather known "as the prime minister who in 2000 went further than any Israeli leader in peace offers to the Palestinians."
While the people of Israel asked for war against Hamas, he was also reluctant to use force against the Hamas and was eager for a cease fire. Barak himself never did think of Hamas as a being the bigger threat and kept his attention on Iran which to him was a greater threat. This ironically also led to his removal from the post of Prime Minister.
Barak's decision to take this military step has also brought attention back to him as possibly being the Prime Minister of Israel again, due to his caution in going to war.
Whatever the case his recent actions surely has raised his popularity along with his party's. Still the timing of this mass military action raises numerous question about the hidden politics behind this conflict. Before the events of this past and continuing weeks, the Labor Party of Israel had the... more

The papers this morning are filled with new details of Israel’s “all-out war” (as Defense Minister Ehud Barak put it) on Hamas. More than 350 people have been killed so far, including 60 civilians. The Wall Street Journal notes that Hamas was still firing rockets into Israel, making it unclear how much Israel had degraded its capabilities. The most harrowing story is in The Times: Israel’s attacks destroyed a prison where Hamas had housed citizens suspected of collaborating with Israel. With no prison to protect them, many of the suspects were publicly executed in vengeance killings. The Times reports that one such victim, Salah Hajoj, 32, was pulled out of a hospital on a stretcher. He was shot in the head. The papers this morning are filled with new details of Israel’s “all-out... more

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel is in "all-out war" with Hamas, the nation's defense minister said Monday as Israeli jets continued to hammer targets in Gaza and the Palestinian death toll reportedly topped 300.
"We have stretched our hand in peace many times to the Palestinian people. We have nothing against the people of Gaza," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said. "But this is an all-out war against Hamas and its branches."
Barak's remarks to parliament came as Israeli warplanes carried out a third day of strikes against the Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza.
The Palestinian death toll from the campaign has topped 300, most of them Hamas militants, Palestinian medical sources said Monday. The attacks also have wounded about 650 people, the sources said.
Columns of smoke rose over Gaza City, while Israeli tanks cruised along the edges of Gaza.
Iyad Nasr, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the streets of Gaza were largely empty while airstrikes continued Monday morning.
"Very little number of cars are going out," he said. "People who need to secure some basic food supplies are all to go out, or people looking for a family member who is missing or going to a hospital."
A U.N. spokeswoman in Gaza City described the scene as chaotic and said Palestinians were "running in all directions" and had begun fighting among themselves.JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel is in "all-out war" with Hamas, the nation's... more

The government-appointed Winograd inquiry into the Lebanon war in 2006 concluded that it had been a "large and serious" failure. Despite this, the report never pinned any direct blame on Defence Minister Ehud Barak who has stated that he will not quit after it's findings,
""Why am I staying? I'm staying in the post of defence minister because I know what kind of challenges face Israel,"
The war started when Israel declared that it wanted back two Israeli soliders who were captured by Hezbollah in a cross border raid, it was largely considered a terrible failure by the Israeli public. Barak's decision to say may have been influenced by labor polls say analysts, his departure would also have meant that Mr Olmert's coalition would have been left short of the 61 MPs needed for a majority in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament). The government-appointed Winograd inquiry into the Lebanon war in 2006 concluded that... more
