Last week, the American Family Association claimed that its boycott against Home Depot was successful.
AFA was boycotting the company because Home Depot has been very supportive of the lgbtq community, even publicly supporting pride events and providing booths for children during those events.
However, Samantha F. DeVaney, a representative of Home Depot, said that this was not true:
We have never changed our commitment to diversity and inclusion of all people, and we have no intention of doing so. Nor have we changed our apron policy or the guidelines for our Foundation?s charitable giving.
So today, AFA is now admitting that it was wrong about its Home Depot boycott:
AFA's director of special projects, Randy Sharp, now says his organization spoke too soon. "Once we brought that to light, Home Depot made a public statement to everyone who contacted them and said [essentially] 'No, we haven't changed any policies. When it comes to homosexuality, homosexual marriage in our culture, we will continue to support it financially.

A Shih Tzu has reminded us that all dogs need to be approached carefully and politely - regardless of size. A Home Depot greeter had the top of her nose bitten off after trying to greet a Shih Tzu in a shopping cart who accompanied his elderly owner to the store. Anna Riel was horrified when, after bending over the shopping cart and reaching out her hand to pet the dog, he launched his attack...

An argument over a return at a local home improvement center escalated yesterday into an employee punching a customer, the victim's son said.
John Galarza of Tottenville was at the Mariners Harbor Home Depot on Forest Avenue around 3:30 p.m. with his father, also John, who lives in Richmond Valley.
The younger Galarza said he was trying to return a roll of electrical wire, but was told by an employee and manager that it was not returnable.
They began arguing -- Galarza saying that the rule was not listed on the receipt or return policy -- and the manager went to call security.
According to the younger Galarza, the female employee then started making derogatory comments to his 66-year-old father and suddenly punched him in the mouth.
Police confirmed that 28-year-old Shakima Hardy of the Park Hill section of Clifton was arrested at the Home Depot store and charged with misdemeanor assault following the incident, in which the elder Mr. Galarza was knocked to the ground and was left bleeding from the mouth.
The blow, his son noted, knocked out several of his father's teeth and caused the older man to hit his head on the concrete floor.
"She's an employee, she's supposed to represent the place," the younger Galarza said. "It's crazy."
Paramedics brought his father to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where he was told he had a concussion. He was expected to stay hospitalized overnight.
An employee at Home Depot said the store had no comment and referred all calls to the company's corporate office in Atlanta, Ga.
"We take this matter very seriously and we immediately launched an investigation," Home Depot spokeswoman Jen King said.
"At this point, we are still conducting our investigation and defer questions to the police."

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Two men who police said dressed as women are jailed on robbery charges following an incident at a Florida Home Depot store in which employees and customers were hit with pepper spray.
Boynton Beach police said Thursday that 24-year-old David Tucker and 26-year-old Kendal Edgar Lowry were dressed as females when they allegedly tried to steal power tool batteries using a large purse. When confronted by a store employee, police say Lowry used the pepper spray.
The incident Wednesday was captured on surveillance video. Four people were treated at a hospital for pepper spray exposure.
A third man police said was the getaway car driver is also facing robbery charges. Court records didn't list attorneys for any of the three.

The antigay American Family Association is targeting Home Depot because the retail chain sponsored pride festivals and offers domestic partner benefits to its employees.
Joemygod reports the AFA has launched a formal boycott, urging its members to stop shopping at Home Depot's stores. The AFA website includes the two images shown above, including the picture with children that is allegedly from a pride festival.
According to the AFA: "The flags in these Home Depot cups promote a gay website which proclaims itself as 'the men's social group for men who have sex with men.' The cups were given to children by The Home Depot gay parade marchers, while homosexual activists followed up by introducing them to gay sex websites. The Home Depot has no problem aligning itself with gay activist groups who target children with a pro-homosexual message."
The AFA takes umbrage with Home Depot sponsoring Pride events in Nashville and Durham, N.C., as well as offering domestic partner benefits to its employees. The AFA also tries to incite ire by pointing out Home Depot offers insurance benefits that cover gender reassignment surgery. The antigay American Family Association is targeting Home Depot because the retail... more

Home Depot had a problem: their employees kept sawing off their own extremities with the saws they used to cut lumber for customers. Michael Powell invented a gadget which fixed the problem, and offered to sell the device to the chain for $2,000 each. Then, the inventor's lawsuit alleged, Home Depot simply stole the gadget's design, made their own, and wouldn't compensate him. "F*** Michael Powell. Let him sue us." one executive said at the time. Now the chain must pay him a judgment of about $25 million.
Paying Powell for his invention in the first place would have cost $4 million for the devices that are now installed in 2,000 stores.

Slowly but surely, LED light bulbs have been getting brighter and more efficient, but price has always been a major factor staying their adoption. Back in 2007, a single 308 lumen bulb cost $65, and the more things changed, the more they've stayed the same. Now, out of the blue, The Home Depot has stepped forward with a cost-effective alternative. For $20, the new EcoSmart LED bulb promises a 429 lumen, 40W equivalent with a 50,000 hour expected lifetime, making it cheaper and nearly as powerful as the 450 lumen, $40-50 design industry heavyweight GE unveiled last month.
Best of all, it's already available for purchase (though backordered) at our source link.

So, some people like to call things FAILs, when they aren’t FAILs at all. I try to look for the glimmer of goodness in everything, so this is another edition of some FAILs that I don’t think are really FAILs.
Most structures need mortar and steel to stand. This man has constructed a fully functioning Pompadour with no more than hairspray and elbow grease.
C'mon this isn't a FAIL. They say that unemployment rates are surging amongst youth. Clearly this young man is rolling in dough. Don't knock this young entrepreneur.
NOT A FAIL! As the 16th century English poet Christopher Marlowe once wrote: "Tis but an honour, to be granted glorious death from a Slurpee machine."
I know you say that you're "morally opposed" to big box stores, but it's so inconvenient to go downtown just for hookers. This store opened literally around the corner, I think you should really just check it out. I know that you'll really appreciate the discounts.
Do you want your kid to give your kid more air? Have you tested the playpen to make sure he doesn't go whoopsies? Did you double check? If the structure is sound this isn't a FAIL. Next!
UGH! I can't get over the abstinence-only sex education community. Let me make this clear: IF YOU GO ON A PICNIC WITHOUT CONDOMS, YOU WILL COME BACK PREGNANT!
This isn't a FAIL. It's a great example of someone adhering to the values of sustainability. When most people get junk mail, they normally just throw it out. This individual decided to prank-the-f*ck out of her roommate, by filling their Camry with coupons.
This is only a FAIL because you both went through the window. Honey how many times do I have to tell you? We have a door! The only time you should use a window, is in case of fire. And if this were a fire, your laughter would be completely inappropriate.
Catch up on your FAILs that aren’t FAILS.

You only have one hyperbolic minute left before Christmas Eve, and you haven't bought any of the gifts for the people on your list. What on earth are you supposed to do? Consult the internet...
I found these perfect gifts with a few clicks of the keyboard.
Oh snap, you only have eight hours left to get these Garfield and Odie plush dolls. Garfield is holding a clover that says "Let's get Irish." This would be a perfect gift for your wife, if she is perennially dissatisfied with previous gift selections.
You only have a few minutes to bid on this Road Kill calendar. This would be the perfect gift for that adolescent in your life who spends his time torturing small mammals. If he's not on your Christmas list now, you could be on his list later.
If you're really struggling you can buy your mom this shirt that reads "Oral Sex is always a great last minute gift." Hopefully she'll think that muscular Santa Claus is cute.
"Yo baby, I just picked you up a vintage Victoria's Secret catalog from 2001!"
For that gear-head on your list, why not pick up a DeWalt compressor. I don't know what it does, but if he's really that into hardware, he probably will.
New York Daily News wants you to buy a print of this mother and daughter shopping in Manhattan. This would be the perfect gift for someone who knows them. It also might be good for Scooby Doo fans, who prefer his left side.
I'm probably going to just give my loved ones gag gifts. What kind of gifts will you buy for your relatives? You only have one hyperbolic minute left before Christmas Eve, and you haven't... more

Home Depot the big-box hardware store, is taking a hard look at those acres of blacktop surrounding their stores – and seeing dollar signs.
Looking for ways to squeeze revenue out of the company's portfolio of properties, the real estate division found that a quarter of the company's stores – about 500 – could support an acre-sized business in the parking lot.
Fast-food restaurants, banks or auto-parts stores are the most likely businesses that will pop up on those oceans of asphalt that are no longer practical, said Mike LaFerle, vice president of real estate and construction for the company.
The 14 stores in the Sacramento region are among the potential locations for the "carve-out" projects, but specific sites have not been identified.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A former cashier for The Home Depot who has been wearing a "One nation under God" button on his work apron for more than a year has been fired, he says because of the religious reference. The company claims that expressing such personal beliefs is simply not allowed.
"I've worn it for well over a year and I support my country and God," Trevor Keezor said Tuesday. "I was just doing what I think every American should do, just love my country."
The American flag button Keezer wore in the Florida store since March 2008 says "One nation under God, indivisible."
Earlier this month, he began bringing a Bible to read during his lunch break at the store in the rural town of Okeechobee, about 140 miles north of Miami. That's when he says The Home Depot management told him he would have to remove the button.
Keezer refused, and he was fired on Oct. 23, he said.
"It feels kind of like a punishment, like I was punished for just loving my country," Keezer said.
A Home Depot spokesman said Keezer was fired because he violated the company's dress code.
"This associate chose to wear a button that expressed his religious beliefs. The issue is not whether or not we agree with the message on the button," Craig Fishel said. "That's not our place to say, which is exactly why we have a blanket policy, which is long-standing and well-communicated to our associates, that only company-provided pins and badges can be worn on our aprons."
Fishel said Keezer was offered a company-approved pin that said, "United We Stand," but he declined.
Keezer's lawyer, Kara Skorupa, said she planned to sue the Atlanta-based company.
"There are federal and state laws that protect against religious discrimination," Skorupa said. "It's not like he was out in the aisles preaching to people."
Keezer said he was working at the store to earn money for college, and wore the button to support his country and his 27-year-old brother, who is in the National Guard and is set to report in December for a second tour of duty in Iraq.
Skorupa noted the slogan on Keezer's pin is straight from the Pledge of Allegiance.
"These mottos and sayings that involve God, that's part of our country and historical fabric," Skorupa said. "In God we trust is on our money."
Michael Masinter, a civil rights and employment law professor at NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, said any lawsuit over religious discrimination might be a tough one to win.
"Because it's a private business, not one that's owned and operated by the government, it doesn't have to operate under the free speech provisions of the First Amendment," Masinter said.
"But we're not talking about religious displays here," he said. "This sounds more like a political message ... Wearing a button of that sort would not easily be described as a traditional form of religious expression like wearing a cross or wearing a yarmulke."
--------------------------------------------
I understand that some thing "Under God" and "In God We Trust" should be removed. But that isn't the case here....it exists on said money as well as in the pledge and until it is removed that's where it exists. So stating that it should be removed isn't adding much and is totally avoiding a real answer.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A former cashier for The Home Depot who has been wearing... more

Cypress trees belong in the ground, not in plastic bags!
A Florida cypress forest is a beautiful thing. Cypress trees provide habitat for threatened and endangered species, critical areas for migratory birds, help protect our communities from flooding, filter our waters, and are part of the amazing experience of being in nature in Florida. They are a valuable and intrinsic element of all that is wild and free in Florida. They belong in the ground, in our wetlands, and along our coastlines…NOT in plastic bags as mulch.
Cypress forests in Louisiana, Florida, and throughout the Gulf are being clear-cut to produce cypress mulch. Whole swamp ecosystems are being lost and the entire trees are being ground up to be sold in the garden departments of Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe's.
These forests and wetlands are literally being sold off for two dollars a bag. It's like shredding the Constitution to make post-it notes: a NATIONAL TREASURE is being turned into a disposable product.
The Gulf Restoration Network (http://www.healthygulf.org/) and the Save Our Cypress Coalition (http://www.saveourcypress.org) has presented Lowe's, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot with extensive evidence of the destruction that is caused from cypress mulch. All three companies recognize it is a problem, but none of them have taken the concrete steps that are necessary to live up to the environmental commitments that they tout so loudly. These companies need to stop selling cypress mulch.
Cypress mulch is an unsustainable and unnecessary product, and there are much better options available. Melaleuca mulch is a great alternative and using this product is a way to help protect the Everglades while saving cypress trees. (Melaleuca trees were planted by the Army Corps of Engineers around the edges of the Everglades in the early 1920s as a way of drying the "swamps." This tree has become a pest because it proliferates at an enormous rate and can overtake native vegetation). And of course, there are always the leaves that fall in the driveway or the grass clippings from your yard.
The Gulf Restoration Network is proud to be working with Florida Defenders of the Environment to spread the word about protecting cypress forests. FDE has signed on to a Save Our Cypress campaign letter, and recently hosted a meeting of local activists in Gainesville who are working together to stop the sale of cypress mulch. Together we can protect rivers like the Withlacoochee and the Ocklawaha, and ensure the cypress-filled banks are there for future generations.
Please take a moment on your next shopping trip to tell the store manager that you don't want the company to sell cypress mulch, and visit www.healthygulf.org to send a message directly to the CEOs of Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe's.
To learn more about the campaign and to get involved in this effort please contact Joe Murphy at 352-583-0870, or joe@healthygulf.org.Cypress trees belong in the ground, not in plastic bags!

Late blight, which caused the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s and 1850s, is killing potato and tomato plants in home gardens from Maine to Ohio and threatening commercial and organic farms, U.S. plant scientists said on Friday.
"Late blight has never occurred this early and this widespread in the United States," said Meg McGrath, a plant pathologist at Cornell University's extension center in Riverhead, New York.
She said the fungal disease, spread by spores carried in the air, has made its way into the garden centers of large retail chains in the Northeastern United States.
"Wal-mart, Home Depot, Sears, Kmart and Lowe's are some of the stores the plants have been seen in," McGrath said in a telephone interview.
The disease, known officially as Phytophthora infestans, causes large mold-ringed olive-green or brown spots on plant leaves, blackened stems, and can quickly wipe out weeks of tender care in a home garden.
McGrath said in her 21 years of research, she has only seen five outbreaks in the United States. The destructive disease can spread rapidly in cooler, moist weather, infecting an entire field within days.
