Le folksonomie aggiungono funzionalità collaborative e user-generated alle questioni legate all’indicizzazione dei dati: nascono grazie alla possibilità stessa di archiviare e condividere documenti online, la caratteristica primaria del Web 2.0, insieme alla necessità di annotare tali documenti con le parole chiave più appropriate, in modo che le informazioni rimangano recuperabili.
Queste parole chiave o keyword sono meglio note come tag: il tagging sociale su una determinata piattaforma web crea una particolare folksonomia, che è già un livello di metadati.
