Authorities say the 22-year-old man accused of shooting 18 people including a Federal Judge and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is Jared Loughner, a military cadet and Tucson, Arizona resident.
The following is a manifesto posted online shortly before the shooting — it has since been removed from Jared Loughner’s YouTube channel but has been made available here in its entirety:

Playing Tetris could reduce the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to new British research.Experts from Oxford University found the old-school game of block-dropping action can positively alter the way negative thoughts are created after a distressing event. This means it could help prevent flashbacks and other unwanted traumatic memories.Researchers from the university's psychology department tested a group of people with no previous mental health problems. They were all shown a video containing disturbing images such as fatal road accidents and human surgery. Then 30 minutes later, the participants were split into three groups. One played Tetris, one played a game called Pub Quiz and the third was told to just sit quietly.During this 10-minute period, the scientists found those in the Tetris group reported the fewest number of flashbacks compared to the other two groups. They were also asked to keep a flashback diary for a week and those who had played Pub Quiz experienced significantly more than any others. The authors concluded that engaging in a visual task like Tetris can be protective after a traumatic event because it interferes with the brain's ability to lay down visual memories - the same harrowing images that could later return as flashbacks.A further test left a gap of four hours between the participants watching the video and playing the game but the same results were found.Tetris was developed in 1984 and has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.

Even if you've been living in Germany or England and pay as much attention to pharmaceutical minutiae as I do, odds are the drug reboxetine would be Greek to you.
The Pfizer antidepressant, never approved in the U.S., has been available in many European countries since 1997. Even so, the medicine, which zeroes in on the chemical norepinephrine in the brain, hasn't been a big hit.
Now we're getting a deeper look from German researchers at why that may be. An analysis just published by BMJ, the British Medical Journal, pans reboxetine, calling it "an ineffective and potentially harmful antidepressant."
Perhaps the most disturbing part of the report is that three-quarters of the clinical test data the German researchers examined had never been published. Pfizer made the data available only after "massive public pressure," said the researchers, affiliated with the nonprofit Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care.
After the previously unseen data on more than 3,000 patients were added to the mix, the researchers found reboxetine wasn't effective for treating major depression and had more side effects than a placebo or Prozac.
In a statement, the German group said, "when the results concealed up to now were included, the effect of reboxetine (marketed under the trade name Edronax) became so small that patients did not benefit from the drug, meaning that it is useless." The researchers say their experience with reboxetine underscores the need for mandatory public reporting of the results from clinical tests of pharmaceuticals.
Pfizer stands behind reboxetine. A company statement said it's "an effective treatment option" for patients with depressive illness/major depression. Furthermore, the company said it discloses the results of its clinical trials to regulators. In time, Pfizer said it would provide more detailed comments on the BMJ review.

“In all my time playing and in 10 years of working with players since I retired, I can’t remember one guy, not one, who asked for help,” said Robert Bailey, who spent 11 seasons with six different teams as a defensive back and special teams ace and now is a marketing agent working with Drew Rosenhaus.
....
“Teams spend millions of dollars every year looking for somebody who is better than you. Could you imagine going to work like that every day, thinking that somebody you worked with was doing nothing but trying to replace you?”
....
“The nature of the job is inhumane. It’s the most stressful job I can think of. There are jobs that are more dangerous, but the pressure to perform every day is intense, so it’s easy to project that the pressure comes from outside and that the problem isn’t you. Imagine that you’re at work every day and someone is following you around with a camera the whole time and then you watch yourself as other people critique what you’re doing.”

The effort to save 33 men trapped deep in a Chilean mine is an unprecedented challenge, mining safety experts said Tuesday. It means months of drilling, then a harrowing three-hour trip in a cage up a narrow hole carved through solid rock.
If all of that is successful, the freed men will emerge from the earth and "feel born again," said an American miner who was part of a group dramatically rescued in 2002 with similar techniques. But that rescue pulled men from a spot only one-tenth as deep.
"They're facing the most unusual rescue that has ever been dealt with," said Dave Feickert, director of KiaOra, a mine safety consulting firm in New Zealand that has worked to improve China's dangerous mines. "Every one of these rescues presents challenging issues. But this one is unique."
First, engineers must use a 31-ton drill to create a "pilot" hole from the floor of the Atacama Desert down 2,200 feet (700 meters) to the area in the San Jose mine where the men wait.
Then, the drill must be fitted with a larger bit to carve out a rescue chimney that will be about 26 inches (66 centimeters) wide — a task that means guiding the drill through solid rock while keeping the drill rod from snapping or getting bogged down as it nears its target.
Finally, the men must be brought up one at a time inside a specially built cage — a trip that will take three hours each. Just hauling the men up will itself take more than four days — if there are no problems.
"Nothing of this magnitude has happened before; it's absolutely unheard of," said Alex Gryska, a mine rescue manager with the Canadian government.
Gryska said he is confident Chile's state-run Codelco mining company, with its vast expertise in the world's top copper-producing nation, would successfully drill the hole out. But he said he is worried about the three to four months officials say it will take to do so — and the key role the miners themselves will play in their own rescue.
Chilean officials said the miners will have to remove upward of 3,000 tons of rock as it falls into the area where they are trapped. There is little danger to the men — the area includes a shelter and about 500 meters (yards) of a shaft outside that. But as the rock starts to fall a month from now, the men will work in nonstop shifts to remove it with wheelbarrows and industrial sweepers.
"The thing that concerns me is welfare of workers, their mental state. That will be real tough," said Gryska. "From a health perspective, it's hot down there. They're talking about working 24/7 in 85 degrees for two months. Their mental state for that work will be critical."
Early on, Chile's Health Minister Jaime Manalich said at least five of the men showed signs of depression. But spirits have improved with a supply of water, food, special clothes to keep them dry in damp conditions and the first verbal communication with loved ones this week.
Late Tuesday, the government released another video of the miners that shows them smiling, shaved and wearing red T-shirts. The short video, which doesn't appear to have sound, is a stark contrast to previous videos that pictured the men shirtless and more subdued, with some getting emotional while recording a message for loved ones.
Earlier, Chilean officials met with four "life sciences" specialists from NASA in Santiago.
Michael Duncan, NASA's deputy chief medical officer who is leading the team in Chile, said his group had been asked to provide help in nutrition and behavioral health.
Duncan, speaking at a news conference in Santiago, said his team viewed two videos the miners made of themselves and their surroundings — and they clearly raised some concern about weight loss.
He said a priority was increasing the miners' caloric intake, getting them on a regular sleep schedule and ensuring they remain optimistic.
"These miners showed us tremendous strength in surviving as long as they did without any contact with the surface," he said. "What we want to try to avoid is any kind of situation of hopelessness on the part of the miners."The effort to save 33 men trapped deep in a Chilean mine is an unprecedented... more

BP to fund mental health programs in the Gulf
BP announced Monday that it will provide $52 million to fund mental health programs across the Gulf Coast.
The announcement comes after BP was criticized for not responding to the mental health needs of people affected by the oil that began gushing from the company's rig the Deepwater Horizon in April.
"As part of our determination to make things right for the people of the region, we are providing this assistance now to help make sure individuals who need help know where to turn," said Lamar McKay, president of BP America in a press release. BP officials say over the past few weeks, they have been gathering information from federal and state health officials and mental health groups to determine the needs of the community.
The money will go to fund both federal and state programs. For a complete list, click here.August 16th, 2010

Alex Simmons produced Vanguard's "War Crimes," about veterans who have been charged with violent crimes.
In the last two years the Army has drastically cut the number of "personality disorder" designations, increasingly diagnosing soldiers instead with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
This change comes after The Nation reported that thousands of soldiers at the height of the Iraq War may have been misdiagnosed, and were thus unable to seek treatment for what they really have -- PTSD.

A new generation of children veterans, some of them scarred in ways seen and unseen. While military hospitals may mend the physical wounds, as a society do we understand the mental trauma endured? Will they be forgotten?
t’s always been true that when a soldier comes home, he brings the war back with him – emotionally, at least. As the Economy at home is crashing, no jobs and little money, many returning veterans will be faced with mental depression and lack of support.
Post-traumatic stress was defined in 1980, partly based on the experiences of soldiers and victims of war. It produces a wide range of symptoms in men and women who have experienced a traumatic event that provoked intense fear, helplessness or horror.
The Army’s own study of the mental health of troops who fought in Iraq found that about one in eight reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The survey also showed that less than half of those with problems sought help, mostly out of fear of being stigmatized or hurting their careers.

Rights for Imprisoned People with Psychiatric Disabilities (RIPPD) has been working on policing issues for years. Specifically we have been pushing for the implementation of Community Crisis Intervention Teams so that the people with psychiatric disabilities can get access to treatment and not be harassment, arrested or killed by the cops.
We wanted to shout out Ñetas and Mothers on The Move for their collaboration on making our Raising Awareness, Building Communities event happen. In unity all things are possible. This event brought to light an issue that for far too long has been ignored in our communities., namely mental illness and the criminal injustice system. We as a community still hold a stigma against those with mental illness. This stigma has allowed the NYPD to easily target, taser, beat and kill people with mental illness without any recourse or accountability.
Community Crisis Intervention Teams have been successful in major cities all over the United States, having originally started in Memphis. Not only have these teams saved lives but they have actually changed the culture of police departments adding a level of humanity and understanding that did not previously exist. RIPPD will continue to fight until the NYPD changes their practices and adopts Community Crisis Intervention Teams.
