Article:
Rumors have swirled about Apple readying a new version of the iPod Touch with a camera and microphone, which, combined with a Skype account, would pretty much obviate the need for a home phone line once and for all.
A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.
If iPod Touches with cameras and microphones go on sale “in two to three months,” as our source expects them to (and which corresponds with our expected timeframe), they will transform the entertainment-oriented iPod Touch line into a voice communications tool wherever WiFi is available.
In addition to these voice-over-IP capabilities, which should have telephone providers quaking in their boots, the microphone (and camera) would enable the iPod Touch to understand voice commands, capture video and images, and work with a wider variety of programs in the App Store.
(Plus, as some Wired commenters have suggested, one could combine a microphone-equipped iPod Touch with the Verizon MiFi personal hotspot creator to enable — at long last — the iPhone experience on Verizon’s network.)Seems like these should've been added sooner...

Looks like Wired’s “well-connected source” is telling them some industry threatening secrets. According to them, Apple’s Chinese Contractors are already popping out iPod Touch units with included cameras and microphones, which isn’t really surprising. The iPod Touch has needed a camera for quite some time, and the fully supported VoIP option is extremely plausible as well.Looks like Wired’s “well-connected source” is telling them some... more

“Questionable content” never escapes Apple’s censors banning iPhone apps over ridiculous reasons. However, the laid-back bunch at the California-based consumer electronics giant apparently saw nothing out of ordinary in a marijuana app. Simply dubbed Cannabis, it discovers nearby cannabis-related institutions and organizations in your state, even providing handy links to legal coffee shops abroad.
Say you’re bored to death in a new city and you want to get stoned. No problem, just load Cannabis on your iPhone and get locations to the nearest - well, not drug dealers but pharmaceutical stores. I thought there would never come a day when I’d be reviewing a pot-related iPhone app, but I’m obviously wrong about that.
The $2.99 program (App Store link) is rated 12+ because it breaks no law.
Cannabis simply discovers nearby stores that legally carry marijuana supplies for medical purposes, and only in U.S. states where marijuana is legalized. The program will also find locations to other cannabis-related institutions, like clinics, attorneys, cooperatives, etc. You can search by city and ZIP code, bookmark listings, add bookmarks to contacts, etc.
Ajnag, the developer behind this app, plans to add marijuana-related news, videos, and reviews in future updates. Let’s be clear, this app won’t help you get even the smallest cannabis supply unless you can produce a medical prescription from your doctor. Nevertheless, it’s still very unlike Apple, the company known for the infamous App Store screening process, to even consider, let alone approve, such an app. Here’s how the developer describes the app:
“Looking for your cannabis medicine? Need to find a doctor? Have legal issues? Cannabis Apps has cultivated an iPhone application that allows you to quickly locate the nearest medical cannabis collectives, cooperatives, doctors, clinics, attorneys, organizations, and other patient services in states that have passed medical marijuana legislation. Information is continuously updated and supplied by iMedicalCannabis.org, Ajnag.com, and the Patient ID Center.

In a move that's been rumoured for some time, Blizzard Entertainment today finally released an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows access to the Warcraft Armory. Dubbed the World of Warcraft Mobile Armory, the app allows a player to view their list of characters or search for others, plan talent builds and compare achievements. In a further interesting twist it also provides access to the in-game calendar, meaning that responding to in-game event invitations suddenly becomes much easier. The app also provides access to the Warcraft item database.
The move has been anticipated since April this year, when Blizzard sent a Cease and Desist letter to other developers that had already produced iPhone applications that carried out similar functions. Although some of the apps were available free of charge, others had a price tag attached and it was felt that this is what Blizzard were trying to stop. Today's release shows that Blizzard were intending to release their own app to fill the gap.
The Mobile Armory is the second Warcraft app, alongside the Blizzard Mobile Authenticator. Both are available free from the iTunes App Store. In a move that's been rumoured for some time, Blizzard Entertainment today... more

If you're one of the many that haven't bothered with Apple's £5.99 3.0 OS update for your iPod Touch, then news that there could be a new iPod Touch coming in September might make you wince.
According to CNet, "fans of the iPod touch who felt left out due to last week's launch of the iPhone 3G S, take heart: there's a new device on the way. In the BlueTool initialisation script in the iPhone 3.0 firmware there are mentions of a new iPod touch called 'iPod3,1.' Given that the current generation is referred to as 'iPod2,1' it would seem to indicate that Apple has a new version in the works."
There's still no word on what new features a new iPod Touch could include, so let us know what you'd want to see included by Apple...If you're one of the many that haven't bothered with Apple's... more

One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone as gaming platform is its lack of physical controllers. That may be changing soon.
The inclusion of more robust Bluetooth support and other changes delivered in firmware 3.0 allow Apple and third-party developers to create game controllers for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
And Apple seems pretty sure they're coming, so sure, in fact, that it is one of nine things mentioned on the front page talking up the 3.0 update that is free for iPhone users, but will cost Touch owners $10.
Third-party Game Accessories
Connect fun new game accessories via the iPod touch 30-pin connector and Bluetooth.
A source told Kotaku earlier this month that some controllers for the devices already exist, and that they use Bluetooth. Personally, I don't think I'd want to snap a controller onto my iPhone and carry it around, but our source points out that game controller add-ons could be a great companion for long trips. One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone as gaming platform is its lack of... more
