Fluoride is the name given to a group of compounds that are composed of the naturally occurring element fluorine and one or more other elements. Both organic and inorganic compounds containing the element fluorine are sometimes called fluorides. Fluorides are present naturally in water and soil.
Fluoride is to be added to the water supply of Southampton, U.K. – the first city in 40 years to adopt the policy.
Recently, MP John Denham, Southampton Itchen, has written to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to ask for clarification of the coalition government’s policy on the potential fluoridation of Southampton’s water supplies.
Mass Medication
In the past, water companies were reluctant to fluoridate for fear of being sued. However, in 2003, new legislation was brought in by the government which gives the 28 strategic health authorities the power to compel water companies, which will be compensated if any legal liabilities occur, to put fluoride in the mains supply and enforce mass medication.
In the early 1940′s, scientists discovered that people who lived where drinking water supplies had naturally occurring fluoride levels of approximately 1 part fluoride per million parts water (ppm), or 1 milligram fluoride per liter of water (mg/L), had fewer dental cavities.
In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, adjusted the fluoride content of its water supply to 1.0 ppm and thus became the first city to implement community water fluoridation. By 1992, more than 60 percent of the U.S. population served by public water systems had access to water fluoridated at approximately 1.0 ppm.
Phosphate Fertilizer Industry
Whilst the fluoride was naturally (organic) occurring in the cited initial study in 1940, the fluoride added to water is not natural (inorganic). The chemical added to our water is a fluorine compound called hexafluorosilicic acid and its salt, sodium hexafluorosilicate that is created as a by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry as well as in the manufacturing of steel, aluminum, glass, and cement.

"The FDA has, for decades, ridiculously insisted that mercury fillings pose no health threat whatsoever to children. While dismissing hundreds of studies showing a clear link between mercury amalgam fillings ("silver fillings") and disastrous neurological effects in the human body, the FDA denied the truth about mercury and effectively protected the mercury filling racket that has brought so much harm to so many people. For over a hundred years, a cabal of "mercury mongers" made up of the American Dental Association, mercury filling manufacturers and indignant dentists have reaped windfall profits by implanting toxic fillings into the mouths of children, all while insisting that mercury - one of the most toxic heavy metals known to modern science - posed no health threat whatsoever.
Today, that reign of toxicity is about to end. Thanks to the tireless, multi-year efforts of people like Charles Brown, National Counsel for Consumers for Dental Choice (www.ToxicTeeth.org), the FDA has now been forced to acknowledge a fact so fundamental that, by any measure of honest science, it should have adopted the position decades ago. What position is that? Simply that mercury is toxic to humans.
The FDA's stonewalling on this issue has been nothing less than a circus of politically-motivated denials, much like the Big Tobacco executives swearing under oath that "Nicotine is not addictive." In similar style, the FDA insisted for decades that "Mercury is not toxic." Both statements, as any sane person can readily conclude, are the outbursts of lunatics. Sadly, those lunatics somehow remain in charge of our nation's food, drugs and cosmetics (and dental care), meaning that any real progress to protect the People must come from outside the FDA.
And that's exactly what just happened. Consumers for Dental Choice teamed up with Moms Against Mercury (www.MomsAgainstMercury.org) to sue the FDA and its commissioner whose name sounds like an evil-minded villian right out of a Marvel comic book: Von Eschenbach. The lawsuit, entitled, Moms Against Mercury et al. v. Von Eschenbach, Commissioner, et al was concluded earlier this week with a reluctant agreement by the FDA to both change its website on the issue of mercury and to reclassify mercury within one year, following a period of public comment (which the agency will no doubt try to drag out as long as possible in order to avoid actually sticking to the terms of the lawsuit agreement).
Remarkably, the FDA's website no longer claims mercury is harmless. The language has now been changed in dramatic fashion, reading: "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus."
There's still a lot of fudging there. Note the careful use of the word "may," which means the FDA still isn't sure whether mercury is neurotoxic, but it might be. This is the FDA's way of continuing to stonewall this issue, even as it lost its lawsuit. For any FDA officials who don't yet think mercury is toxic to the human nervous system, I invite them to chug a few milliliters of the substance themselves and find out what the effects might be. It certainly couldn't make them any more mad than they are already!"

Getting your daily dose of fruit from your smoothie is hugely beneficial. However, dentists are warning the benefits are likely to be outweighed by the negative impact they have on your teeth. Without proper dental care, smoothies can promote tooth decay.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "Fruit smoothies are becoming increasingly popular and the fruit content can make them seem like a good idea.
"However, they contain very high levels of sugar and acid and so can do a lot of damage to the teeth."
The advice is this: Brush your teeth before you drink your smoothie to help protect them from the acid in the smoothie.
Never brush your teeth straight after drinking one as this can further damage your teeth.

Gum disease, one of the most common diseases of adulthood, is the second most common cause of tooth loss, after tooth decay.
It has long been linked to cigarette smoking, but this is the first study to look specifically at cannabis.
The researchers accepted that cannabis users also tended to smoke tobacco.
However, they said that even after allowing for this, heavy cannabis smokers had three times the risk of having established gum disease by the age of 32.
Even cannabis users who did not smoke tobacco developed gum disease.
Overall, 29% of the sample showed some signs of gum disease. Gum disease, one of the most common diseases of adulthood, is the second most common... more

Oh great. As a confirmed sleeping, tooth grinding monster, this news sucks.
Its called sleep bruxism, and it refers to the grinding or clenching of teeth. Theres a waking version, too an unconscious clenching of the teeth, most often owing to stress but the origins are different and the effects are seldom anywhere near as bad as during sleep, when certain of the bodys protective mechanisms are turned off. Left untreated, it can cause damage to the teeth and surrounding tissue, headaches and jaw pain.
Bruxism may be at least as old as the Bible, which describes hell as a state where there is gnashing of teeth. I might fairly be accused of hyperbole if I reversed the equation and declared that bruxism can turn sleep into a kind of hell. But you get the idea. Its a real nuisance.
During sleep bruxism, he explained, the upper and lower teeth may come into direct contact as much as 40 minutes per hour, and for example, on the first molar with a force of about 250 pounds. Hence the football player. Compare that with normal circumstances, when a persons teeth make contact for about 20 minutes a day, while chewing, and with only 20 to 40 pounds of pressure.
Sleep bruxism is not a disease, but a sleep disorder, the third most common one behind sleep talking and snoring. It is more prevalent in children, who often outgrow it, and its origins may be different in adults.
The exact causes are unknown, said Dr. Gilles Lavigne. If anyone would know, its Dr. Lavigne, a professor of dentistry and medicine at the University of Montreal, and president of the Canadian Sleep Society who has published extensively on the topic. In the 1960s, he explains, bruxism was thought to be the bodys response to malocclusion, or problems with how the upper and lower teeth fit together; but that theory was discredited for lack of clinical evidence. Oh great. As a confirmed sleeping, tooth grinding monster, this news sucks.

When I lost my first tooth, I got 5 cents! Now that's inflation...
Angelina Jolie gives her son Maddox $50 every time he loses a tooth.
The 'A Mighty Heart' actress pays significantly more than the average tooth fairy after it was revealed she gave her six-year-old adopted son an impressive $100 when he lost his two front teeth recently.
A friend of the couple said, "Angelina plays the tooth fairy, and gives Maddox a bit more than the usual $5! He gets $50 per tooth, and he's allowed to spend his reward on anything he wants. When I lost my first tooth, I got 5 cents! Now that's inflation...
