It appears that California voters will get a chance to abolish the death penalty this November, and that supporters of the proposed ballot measure will use mostly fiscal and public safety arguments to pick away at the majority of state residents that polls have shown still support capital punishment.
The group SAFE (which stands for Savings, Accountability, Full Enforcement) California this morning held press conferences in San Francisco and three other cities to announce that it is turning in more than 800,000 voter signatures (504,764 are needed) to qualify a measure that would make life in prison without the possibility of parole the maxiumum sentence in California. It would also spare the 720 inmates now on death row in San Quentin Prison, converting their sentences to life in prison.
“We make history today. This is the first time that voters in California will have the opportunity to replace the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of parole,” LaDoris Cordell, a retired Santa Clara County Superior Court judge, said at San Francisco City Hall.It appears that California voters will get a chance to abolish the death penalty this... more

Ron Paul Issues Statement on Obama’s Proposed Tricare Cuts
“Failing to meet the promises we have made to our troops would be unjust and immoral”
LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul issued the following statement regarding the Obama administration’s latest proposal to seek cuts in Tricare benefits for veterans and active military. See comments below.
“As a Doctor, an Air Force Veteran, and Congressman, who serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and has always fought for the best interest of our troops, I am appalled at President Obama’s disregard for the health and well-being of America’s military families and his continued fealty to union boss special interests.
“The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget would require military families and retirees to pay exceedingly more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. This is unacceptable.
“Our military men and women have fought bravely, and in exchange, our country made a promise to them that we must honor. There are trillions of dollars in unwise and unconstitutional spending we must cut. And there are few other leaders in Washington willing to cut spending as deeply as I am and truly balance our budget. But we must make sure we take care of our veterans and military personnel who fight to take care of us.
“We have put our troops in harm’s way, and we must honor our promises. Our troops have paid a heavy price these past 10 years. Over 5,000 have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, 40,000 have seen crushing injuries, and hundreds of thousands more suffer from brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Failing to meet the promises we have made to our troops would be unjust and immoral.
“Instead of cutting our veterans’ benefits, President Obama should truly support our troops by bringing them home to protect our borders and defend our country. Re-unite them with their families and make sure they no longer play policeman in dangerous foreign civil wars. Cutting the benefits of our veterans while we subsidize the security of other wealthy nations like Germany and Japan and play ‘world policeman’ makes no sense.
“As a Congressman, I have taken very seriously my duty to ensure that our fighting men and women are well taken care of and given the respect, dignity, and appreciation they have earned. That is why I introduced H.R. 1092, the Military Retirees Health Care Protection Act, which prohibits the Department of Defense from increasing Tricare fees without congressional approval. I urge my fellow members of Congress, and the other GOP presidential candidates to support this action and support our troops.
“As President, I intend to keep the promises and commitments we have made as a nation to our troops, because they are the ones that sacrifice everything to keep us free.”

According to Gandhi "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." How does this apply to Ron Paul? Well, it is a bit more complicated than that in this case. Here, the "ignoring" certainly fits. The mainstream media talks about everyone else under the sun except for You Know Who. And who can forget the "laughing": he is a crazy old uncle, his suits don’t fit, his eyebrows aren’t "presidential" enough, etc. The "fighting" is clear: he has been smeared with everything in the book they could throw at him, and with lots of stuff that isn’t in the book too. But in the Gandhi case, each of these things occurred pretty much one at a time. First¸ they did this, then they did that. The implication is that after they finished the first thing, they stopped it, and then went on to the second; ditto for the third and fourth. Not so in the case of the Congressman from Texas. Even now, amidst all the laughing and the sneering, they are stillignoring Dr. Paul. How many stories about the presidential campaigns of Romney, Gingrich and Santorum (notice who is missing?) must we read from the New York Times and the Washington Post? How many times must we be reminded that Dr. Paul has not yet won any state election outright? (Maine doesn’t count. Vote fraud is yet another issue that did not beset Gandhi.) Why is it that the major media almost entirelyignored that magnificent and unprecedented march of his supporters in the military on Washington D.C. on February 20, 2012? Don’t ask me how these people can at one and the same time ignore Ron, smear him and laugh at him. To the uninitiated, this sounds like a logical contradiction. But, it would appear, our Powers That Be are even capable of ignoring the laws of logic.
But there are at present two more altogether different deviations from the Gandhi scenario now in play.
The second non-Gandhian scenario being experienced by Ron Paul is that he is now in cahoots with Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney? Bost and tosh. Yes, there is a lack of personal antipathy between the two men; indeed, there is some sort of grudging respect between them. Their wives are friendly. Yes, Ron sees in Mitt a person who is less of a loose cannon in many ways than either Scam or Noot. So what? When it comes to matters of substance, in terms of foreign policy, economic principles, personal liberties as Ron never tires of telling anyone who will listen, there is as much of a unbridgeable a gap between Ron and Mitt as there is between Ron and either of the two others (notice, I’m not mentioning their names? Hah! Take that). This collusion scenario too is an attempt to deflect the Congressman from his goal of bringing liberty to the world. For surely Dr. Paul would be the junior partner in any such amalgamation, at least in the eyes of the mainstream media and the real power brokers in the Republican Party. Maybe, possibly, he or his son Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky will be offered theVice Presidential spot on the ticket.The first is that Ron Paul has "elevated" to the status of "power broker." Nonsense. No, nonsense on stilts. This is just another attempt on the part of the ruling class in our society to deflect Mr. Paul from his goal. First, to win the Republican nomination for President, then to gain a landslide victory over Mr. Obama in the fall, and finally to turn the U.S. and the world too into a free, peaceful, prosperous place where there is liberty for all. And, he will do it too. Yes, the Texas Congressman will have a difficult time attaining the first of these goals. But when and if he does, it will be all downhill after that, as he cashes in on his additional support of first Independents, and second, disaffected Democrats too. The status of "power broker" implies that the next president of the U.S. will take Paul’s calls; that he will have some input into the party platform (which is almost totally ignored in any case); that, perhaps, there will indeed be some sort of luke-warm oversight placed on the Fed; that there will be yet another blue-ribbon commission instituted to study whether marijuana shall be legalized (which will also be ignored). No. "Power broker" is a mere booby prize. Ron is in this for the long haul. For him it is "President or bust." "Power broker," along with ignoring, laughing at, smearing, are just attempts to deflect him from his this magnificent goal of his.
Well, maybe, who knows, the future is uncertain. But at this point in time, there is no doubt about it. Ron Paul is in this game for all the marbles. And power broker, along with junior partner, are only obstacles in his path, along with ignoring, laughing at, smearing, and other such impediments.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul praised hemp as an alternative crop and said a free-market approach would protect the nation’s environment Monday during North Dakota campaign stops that drew hundreds of cheering supporters.
North Dakota, which is holding Republican presidential caucuses March 6, is one of 13 states with a caucus or primary from Feb. 28 to March 6. North Dakota has 28 delegates to the Republican National Convention in August, although the caucus results will not dictate how any of them vote.
Paul campaigned in Williston, Dickinson, Jamestown and Bismarck on Sunday and Monday, following rival Rick Santorum’s swing through Fargo, on the Minnesota border, and the northwestern oil-country town of Tioga last week.
In Jamestown, about 100 miles east of Bismarck, Paul was critical of the federal government’s ban on the cultivation of industrial hemp, a crop that is related to marijuana but does not have its mind-affecting properties.
Industrial hemp is grown in neighboring Canada and other countries, where it is used to make paper, lotions, clothing and biofuels.
North Dakota’s Legislature and Agriculture Department have pushed allowing hemp to be grown in the state. A state lawmaker who wanted to cultivate the crop filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against the Drug Enforcement Administration, seeking a declaration that doing so would be legal.
“There is no reason, in a free society, that farmers shouldn’t be allowed to raise hemp,” Paul said during a Jamestown appearance that drew about 300 people. “Hemp is a good product.”
In Bismarck, where the Republican congressman spoke to about 1,200 people Monday night in the gymnasium of a private Christian school, Paul said enforcement of private property rights would be sufficient to protect citizens against pollution, rather than relying on the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
“The more socialized a system is, the worse the property is, and the worse the environment is,” Paul said. “We should never be bashful about saying we believe in property rights ... and we don’t have to give one inch and say that we’re careless with the environment, because you don’t have a right to pollute your neighbor’s property.”
In North Dakota’s Republican presidential caucuses in 2008, Paul finished third behind Mitt Romney and John McCain, getting 21 percent of the almost 9,800 votes case.
Duane Sattler, of Richardton, was one of the sign-carrying Paul supporters who attended his Bismarck speech. His son, 13-year-old Shawn Sattler, sat nearby, waving an American flag.
“He’s been standing alone a lot of times,” Sattler said of Paul. “He votes for our personal freedoms, for sound money, and for less government and less taxes.”
He became a Paul supporter during his presidential run in 2008, Sattler said. “I really went and did some research, and the deeper I dug, the more I liked the man,” he said. “With the other candidates, the deeper I dug, the less I liked them.”

Rick Santorum attacked President Obama on Saturday for his theology. Although people assumed that Santorum was, like other conservatives, hinting around that Obama is not a Christian but rather a secret Muslim, Santorum denied this allegation. And, likely he meant instead to lump Obama with the 45 million members of mainline Protestant churches in the US who he considers to be pagans. You see, for Santorum, Methodists and Lutherans and Episcopalians may as well be Muslims, since he does not believe that they are Christians.
What is remarkable is that it is Santorum who sounds like a Muslim fundamentalist. And ultimately maybe what he is saying is that Obama isn’t Muslim enough.
Mainline Protestants make up roughly 18 percent of adults in the United States; Seidz-Wald estimates them at 45 million, roughly the number of adult adherents of churches belonging to the National Council of Churches. These denominations for the most part reject a literal approach to the Bible and accept a social gospel, the idea that Christianity mandates good works and care for the poor, needy and vulnerable. The scriptural bases for this belief are quoted here.
As I argued last Sunday, Santorum has his own weird social ideas not grounded in papal encyclicals or the teachings of the Roman Catholic church. (Thanks toJames Downie at WaPo for providing further proof that Santorum is a cafeteria Catholic, holding views that directly contradict a raft of papal encyclicals).
In fact, Santorum by declaring the social Gospel to be un-Christian has not only excommunicated liberal Protestants from Christianity, he has excommunicated the majority of American Catholics, along with the US Council of Bishops and the last few popes, all of whom speak of an “option for the poor.”
what does Santorum think Christianity is about? He thinks it is about moral puritanism.
Thus, he condemns fornication and adultery, but also implicitly revealing clothing. And he is against condoms and birth control pills because in his view they encourage sleeping around (though he doesn’t approve of them for married people either; go figure).
Rick Santorum does not adhere to any recognizable Catholic theology of the social. Rather, he is a Puritan in the Calvinist tradition, staying awake at night afraid that someone somewhere might be committing fornication at the same time that he takes worldly success as a sign of divine favor.
Moreover, Santorum’s approach to religion and social policy is reminiscent of Muslim fundamentalist parties such as al-Nahda in Tunisia.

Outside the auditorium, protesters ranging from medical marijuana advocates, Ron Paul supporters, Tea Partiers and anti-abortion activists lined California Street. But inside the auditorium, Obama was preaching to the choir.
As the lights dimmed, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Several fans shouted, "We love you, Obama."
"San Francisco, I love you back," he replied at the microphone. The crowd screamed.
Two protesters were escorted out in separate incidents when they started loudly heckling the President. The crowd booed at one protester.. But Obama interrupted them. "No, this is what San Francisco is always about," he said. "Folks are not shy about sharing their views in San Francisco. There's always something going on in San Francisco." The crowd laughed and cheered.

(NaturalNews) In a recent town hall meeting in New Hampshire, Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul spoke on Health Freedom and the Constitutional rights of Americans to buy and sell natural food, like raw milk, which hasn’t been tainted with chemicals, hormones, or cooked until completely void of nutrients.
Ron Paul represents the polar opposite of nearly every politician in control of legislation today. Most politicians accept legal bribes (called lobbying) from the big pharmaceutical companies that lead the proliferation of prescription drugs in America, the third leading cause of death. Not only has Ron Paul introduced legislation to repeal the FDA’s prohibition of interstate sales of raw milk, he consistently reminds everyone that Government should not have control over our food choices.
The loudest applause came when Ron Paul spoke about the regulations on raw milk sales. He explained how the FDA does not “take care of us” but rather interferes with our choices by collaborating with special interests. It’s the drug and insurance companies that keep a stranglehold on the American chronic care management system, which doesn’t cure anything, but rather treats symptoms with dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Claire Thompson thinks the principal driver is disappointment with the political system:
Youth disillusionment with politics is nothing new. But for the generation that propelled Obama to victory, the hope-filled high of his campaign and election has had a particularly rough comedown. A Harvard Institute of Politics survey [PDF] found, in December of last year, that young Americans aged 18-29 believe, by a 4-to-1 ratio, that the country is headed in the wrong direction. That’s up from a 2-to-1 ratio in March 2011. As the blogosphere relentlessly warns, this increasingly bleak outlook could have consequences for Obama: The Harvard survey reported an 11-percent drop from late 2007 in the number of 18- to 24-year-old voters who said they’d “definitely” be voting in this election (61 percent to 50 percent). As if to fulfill the prophecy of their inaction, more young voters believe Obama will lose reelection than win (36 percent to 30 percent; 32 percent are not sure).
I don't agree. I think Paul's attraction is his obvious sincerity, his seeming so unlike the other opportunists surrounding him. But above all, I think it's his foreign policy. The post-9/11 generation has seen what war has achieved - virtually nothing but the death of a hundred thousand Iraqis, 5,000 Americans and tens of thousands of maimed and injured vets - and believe the wars were huge errors. They also rightly understand that the world has changed thanks to globalization of capitalism, and see the Cold War mentality of America policing the planet to be at least condescending, and at worst utterly counter-productive and unaffordable. They see their retirement savings disappearing to fuel neocon fantasies of permanent war.
Then there's the insane war on drugs. Paul is the only person, including the cowardly Obama, to take this issue on. The young know it's failed, and that it's racist, punitive and irrational.
That's why Paul does so well with the young. It's not the Fed. It's the war on Iraq and Afghanistan and the war on drugs.

PROLOGUE
Quite simply, we are going to have some fun exposing the “Con Job” that our American elections have become. Together we are going to make common sense out of the deliberate confusion that the 2 major political parties and major media have created around previous elections. By the end of our conversation, you should realize that you should simply cast your vote in accordance with your own “best interests”. Hopefully, you will realize that this is less my endorsement of Ron Paul than it is your very own endorsement of Ron Paul. And we will accomplish all of this in 12 fun and easily understood sections:
1) “All In”?;
2) Prologue;
3) Donald Trump Endorsement;
4) Donald Trump, The Used Car Salesman;
5) Whose decision should you value in making your voting decision?;
6) Counter-Intuitive Tire Kicking;
7) Demonizing and Discrediting the voices of dissent;
8) No perfect Candidate;
9) Jobs, Jobs, Jobs;
10) The Man in the Arena;
11) Settling on a Candidate;
12) I’m All-in!
2) “ALL IN”?
In the card game, Texas Hold’em, “all in” refers to betting the last of your chips/money. http://bit.ly/w5ukXM “All in” is most often invoked by a player who has been on a losing streak and has depleted most of their resources. When a good hand has finally been dealt and the odds indicate it is likely winner the player declares “All In” and bets all of their remaining chips.
This scenario seems to be an apt analogy for the situation we voters find ourselves in this 2012 election. But before I continue with that analogy, let’s talk a little bit about Donald Trump.
3) DONALD TRUMP’s ENDORSEMENT
Recently I heard that Donald Trump was endorsing Mitt Romney. And I thought to myself, so what? Donald Trump is most likely going to endorse a candidate that embraces the concerns of millionaires and reality show executives. I am neither a millionaire nor a reality show executive. So, why do I care who Donald Trump endorses? Donald Trump, as far as I am concerned, you and your endorsement are fired!
But for some reason, the major media considers Donald Trump’s endorsement newsworthy. Perhaps the major media thinks this next presidential election should be like a Junior High Student Council election – A simple popularity contest with few consequences for choosing poorly? I don’t share that perspective.
And then I thought; perhaps the major media and the political parties have framed and confused the elections in such a way that the candidate a person should select to vote for is not obvious. Perhaps the average American is not aware that the propaganda techniques of Edward Bernays are being used upon them to subvert their individual will? (I often advise my fellow citizens that they can't protect themselves, their perspective of reality nor their family from our Government if they don't know about Edward Bernays http://bit.ly/nY9BjW)
Along those lines, my thoughts go to those frazzled rank and file Americans who are busy raising their families and earning money to pay taxes.
“It is also in the interests of a tyrant to keep his people poor, so that they may not be able to afford the cost of protecting themselves by arms and be so occupied with their daily tasks that they have no time for rebellion.”
Aristotle in Politics, J. Sinclair translation, pg. 226, 1962 http://bit.ly/pAI8O0
Further, I am concerned for the newest voters who may not know the “ins and outs” of “kicking the tires” on their first presidential election.
“Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom.”
John Adams
And I am also concerned for our more Seasoned Citizens that dutifully contributed to Social Security and other programs but were lied to by the politicians who frittered away the funds that were supposed to be in the lockbox.
“WE THE PEOPLE have an obligation to keep the promises that were made to previous generations…
…I personally believe if our fiscal problems can’t be solved without cutting benefits to those already retired and retiring within 10 years, all congresspersons who voted yes on budgets which included SS and Medicare taxes in the general fund should be charged with fraud and/or treason and forfeit all of their retirement benefits to fund the now unfunded Social Security and Medicare Liabilities.”
Don Mashak
I feel a duty to sort out the deliberate confusion of this election for my fellow rank and file citizens who may be unaware, frazzled and worn out. I will start out by telling them that the endorsement of Mitt Romney by Donald Trump should mean nothing to them.
4) DONALD TRUMP, THE USED CAR SALESMEN
For you less seasoned citizens, may I first suggest....

I'd like to think that most people in their right minds, if they've actually taken any time out of living their lives to watch a Republican debate probably has had enough. By now it's pretty apparent what the Republicans stand for and against and although it's fun to some of us who probably pay more attention than is healthy to watch them eat their own the time has come to face facts. Well at least my version of facts based upon hours of reading, watching and actually paying attention to history.
