Escambia County (Pensacola, Florida) officials may let a no-kill shelter or similar organization adopt a severely injured dog that was rescued earlier this week and remains at the county’s animal shelter.
Escambia County spokeswoman Sonya Daniel said it is not known what caused the injuries, which removed most of the skin from a large portion of the dog’s back.
“Animal Control took the dog to an emergency clinic where it was treated,” she said. “The vet said the dog was friendly and had a good demeanor. And it was transported to the shelter on Monday.”
“There is no way to know for sure what happened to the dog,” she said. “It was found with no collar or tag, so finding the owner will be difficult.”
Escambia County Sheriff’s spokesman Glenn Austin said the extent of the dog’s injuries would warrant felony charges of animal cruelty against those responsible.

*ALERT* If you believe an animal is in immediate harm, and if the location is known, contact local police and your local FBI branch office as soon as possible. To locate your local FBI branch, visit http://www.fbi.gov/contact/fo/fo.htm.
The Internet can be a powerful medium for connecting us to information to combat animal cruelty, but it also can be a haven for animal abusers who celebrate and actively advertise their shocking crimes. The best way to stop this type of abuse is to immediately report it to the proper authorities and to refrain from contacting, visiting or forwarding links to the offending sites.
* Why is it important to report suspected Internet animal cruelty?
Reporting any type of suspected animal cruelty may save animals’ lives as well as people’s lives. When animals are abused, people are also at risk. The Link® between animal abuse and other forms of societal violence is well-documented. That is why it is critical to immediately report conduct on the Internet that you suspect may be — or that you know is —animal abuse.
* If I see animal cruelty on the Internet, what should I do?
Immediately contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, at http://www.ic3.gov/. The website will direct you to the page where you can file your complaint. IC3 is the proper venue for all Internet crimes, including animal abuse.
Please provide the complete URL (website address) for the website that displayed the suspected animal cruelty. Even if you are located outside the United States, IC3 will review your report as long as the suspected abuser is located in the United States.
* What else can I do?
Because abusive content often violates the user agreement that the creator of the website has signed with the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
To make a report to the ISP, you need to determine who hosts the website. To do that, go to http://www.domaintools.com/, enter the website URL in the “Whois Lookup” search box and click on the search button. Scroll down the results page until you find the numerical Internet Protocol (IP) address assigned to the website. Then go to http://www.arin.net/ (American Registry for Internet Numbers) and enter that IP address in the “Search WHOIS” box and click on the search button. The search results page will provide information about the ISP that hosts the website. The page also might display information about how to report abuse.
If it does not, go to www.search.org/programs/hightech/isp and find the complete contact information for the ISP on the list. All of this information should also be included in your FBI complaint form, where possible.
IMPROVING THE FEDERAL LAWS AS THEY PERTAIN TO INTERNET ANIMAL ABUSE IS CRITICAL!
* The Crush Act (P.L.106-152) penalizes the display of acts of cruelty and sexual abuse of animals that is intended for interstate commerce. Two criteria applies: 1) actual abuse must occur and 2) the website in question must intend to sell the images across state lines.
* The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (P.L. 110-27) strengthens the ability of law enforcement to combat animal fighting by providing felony penalties for interstate commerce, import and export related to animal fighting activities, including commerce in cockfighting weapons.
* Internet Hunting: The Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting Act (H.R. 2711/S. 2422) is a pending federal bill introduced by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). It seeks to prohibit knowingly making available a “computer-assisted remote hunt” (using a computer or other device, equipment or software to control the aiming and discharge of a weapon to hunt).

Just after 2a.m. a semi-tractor trailer hauling horse meat hit the railing and flipped on it's side.
From 2.a.m. to noon, all westbound traffic just before Palisade was diverted to Highway 6 through town and then back up North to the Palisade I-70 access.
Throughout the day crews sent hours power washing the highway trying to get the meat and grease off the roadway. Crews were worried the grease would lead to more accidents if not properly cleaned.
The horse meat was on it's way to California to be processed into dog food. Rescue crews believe the driver fell asleep just seconds before hitting the guardrail. The driver walked away from the accident with minor injuries.

Greed drives the owners of Puppy Mills who breed popular and rare breeds of dogs for profit. Some puppies are smothered when their siblings climb on top of them to escape the sharp wire of their cage and many others freeze to death in unheated garages, barns and outbuildings. Some crates of Moms and pups are stacked five high so the urine and feces rains down on the lower cages. Some breeds of puppies sell for up to $2000 or more in "Pet Stores", so the breeders don't are if some of the pups and moms die in the process. After a female is too old, sick or weak to breed she is dumpped or killed as she will no longer bring a profit. Due to over-breeding, puppies are often deformed or have hidden genetic problems that don't show up for several years.
Please DO NOT ever buy a 'pure breed' puppy from a Pet Store, find a reputable breeder and insist on seeing their facility before paying. Fake papers are easy to make, so don't be fooled. Better yet, find a rescue site for the breed of dog you are interested in, and save another dog from a horrible fate.Greed drives the owners of Puppy Mills who breed popular and rare breeds of dogs for... more

From a Special to the Japan Times:
Slipping away from the over-publicized 'Australia vs. Japan' whaling dialect, already rampant in the media, Boyd Harnell's informative article exposes what the Japanese are up to at home in their own waters.
Financed by Netscape's founder Jim Clark, U.S. conservation group Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) has finished its yearlong covert filming operation of the waters surrounding Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.
Secret cameras hidden in rocks are used to capture violent footage of the blood-stained waters of Taiji's so-called 'killing cove', where an estimated 2,500 dolphins and pilot whales are killed annually.
The footage is being turned into a major documentary feature film destined for worldwide release this summer - "sure to shock the world."From a Special to the Japan Times:
