Guardian Writer and Feminist Julie Bindel who now has become somewhat of a synonym for transphobia in the media. Some argue that Bindel is merely a radical before her time who has simply argued that society can embrace trans people without the need for undergoing surgery but her claims that "Sex change surgery is unnecessary mutilation" have without a doubt offended and degraded a great deal of people within the trans community.

A secondary school in north east Thailand has become one of the first schools to offer separate toilet facilities for transsexual children.
Kampang Secondary School in a poor rural area, where most of the pupils are the children of farmers, has built a toilet between the girls' and the boys', signposted with a half-man, half-woman figure in blue and red.
Headteacher Sitisak Sumontha estimates that in any year between 10% and 20% of his boys consider themselves to be transgender - boys who would rather be girls.
"They used to be teased every time they used the boys' toilets," he said, "so they started using the girls' toilets instead. But that made the girls feel uncomfortable. It made these boys unhappy, and started to affect their work."
"We're not boys," said Triwate Phamanee, 13, "so we don't want to use the boys' toilet - we want them to know we are transsexuals."
Vichai Saengsakul, 15, agrees.
"People need to know that being a transsexual is not a joke," he says, "it's the way we want to live our lives. That's why we're grateful for what the school has done."
Toilet facilities are a hot topic for trans people around the world. Do you think all environments should provide transsexual bathrooms in public places, to cater for a range of gender and sexual identities?

With its spacious, tree-lined grounds and slightly threadbare classrooms, there is nothing obviously unusual about the Kampang Secondary School.
It is situated in Thailand's impoverished north-east, and most of the pupils are the children of farmers.
Every morning at 0800 they all gather outside to sing the national anthem and watch the flag being raised.
Then they have a chance to use the toilets, before heading off the first classes of the day.
Kampang is proud of its toilets. Spotless, and surrounded by flowering tropical plants, they have won national awards for cleanliness.
But there is something else about them too. Between the girls' toilet and the boys', there is one signposted with a half-man, half-woman figure in blue and red.
This is the transsexual toilet, and outside, in front of the mirrors, some decidedly girly-looking teenage boys preen their hair and apply face cream. With its spacious, tree-lined grounds and slightly threadbare classrooms, there is... more

Channel 4 is to broadcast a documentary about the American man who gave birth.
Thomas Beatie was born female but had a sex-change, and was inseminated using sperm from an anonymous donor.
A camera crew followed the 34-year-old throughout the pregnancy and then for the birth of his daughter in a hospital in Bend in the US state of Oregon.
Creative director Sheldon Lazarus said it was a "controversial and unique story" which had become "one of the most sought-after" tales to film.
Pregnant Man, which is being made by production company September Films, is also to be shown in the United States and Germany.
A fascinating human story or an over-hashed freak show? Will you watch this film?

Premiering at Sundance in Park City, Utah, earlier this year, filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian's documentary "Be Like Others" explores how some young men in Iran choose to have gender reassignment surgery -- permissable for "diagnosed transsexuals", as Ayatollah Khomeini announced over 20 years ago passing a law to support the medical procedure. One man in the film sees the option to allow him to pursue "a decent life." The alternative, however, comes with a cultural price to pay because men sexually attracted to men is not only taboo in Iran; homosexuality is punishable by death. "Be Like Others" reveals how several men make the transition through gender reassignment surgery, and their new lives as women. Dr Barhram Mir-Jalali, a Paris-trained physician who specializes in the procedure, estimates he has performed about 450 gender reassignment surgeries in the past 12 years ("Iran's 'diagnosed transsexuals' by Vanessa Barford, BBC News, 25 Feb 2008).Premiering at Sundance in Park City, Utah, earlier this year, filmmaker Tanaz... more
17-year old female-born Sarah Thornton is set to become Britain's youngest sex-change patient. Having lived as a teenage boy for over a year, 'Alex' has been granted permission by his GP and psychiatrist to begin the formal transition process. He is hoping that the female-to-male sex change operation that will include a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy will be completed within the next 12 months.
Having identified as a lesbian before, Alex is convinced that the surgery is the right option for him: 'If I could have had the operation done yesterday, then I would have done. Even the thought of having it makes me feel better, and I'm just looking forward to the day I can start leading my life as a man.'
The doctors' decision to allow Alex to go ahead with the transition process even though he is only 17 years old raises the controversial question of when patients are old enough not only to decide on their gender, but also to physically alter their appearance.
