NEAR SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - At the request of sheriff Rick Walter, Scott County homeowner Rick Hoskins removed a Halloween display in front of his home Wednesday that's the subject of much controversy in the Sikeston area.
The display, which featured a Ku Klux Klan figure alongside an effigy of a black man hanging from a noose, could be seen by drivers on Interstate 55.
Walter said his office had received several complaints about the display, so he contacted the office of prosecuting attorney Paul Boyd to see if it was within the sheriff's department's rights to remove it due to the problems it could cause.
Boyd encouraged Walter to discuss the matter with Hoskins and to ask Hoskins to take it down. Hoskins complied, but indicated he would contact his attorney with the intent of putting the decorations back up.
"There's been a bunch of people that's stopped by since I put them up," said Hoskins. "Said they want to shake my hand. They said they're glad to see a little white pride is still left in this country."
Hoskins also flies a Confederate flag in his front yard, and says he has for years.
"They're my Halloween decorations," Hoskins said. "I think they speak for themselves."
As for neighbors and others in the county, most found the decorations offensive and inappropriate.
"I thought we were passed that," said a woman from Sikeston. "I thought we were all friends here."
"I understand it's freedom of speech," said another woman. "But he needs to get over it."

Vice presidents have historically played the fool to U.S. presidents, and Vice President Joe Biden is quietly proving to be cast better than most Hollywood producers could dream.
In limited media coverage, the vice president announced a milestone of 200,000 homes being weatherized with Troubled Asset and Relief Program funds on a trip to Manchester, New Hampshire last week. Didn’t hear about it? Neither did hardly anybody else even though the White House announced the event with all the pomp and circumstance it gives major news events, receiving very little media coverage.
Perhaps that’s because more than 7.5-million Americans have lost their homes to foreclosure, and less than 500,000 have received mortgage modifications through the president’s Making Home Affordable modification program. The event occurred on the same day President Barack Obama was playing golf ironically with his banking buddy. There hardly seems to be any appetite for homes being weatherized when millions are being kicked out of theirs.
“Thanks to the Recovery Act, thousands of construction workers across the country are now on the job making energy-saving home improvements that will save working families hundreds of dollars a year on their utility bills,” the vice president told a small crowd in Manchester. “From replacing windows and doors to adding insulation, these are small changes that are making a big difference for American workers, manufacturers and consumers.
“We’ve hit the accelerator on the weatherization program, making over 200,000 homes more energy-efficient already, and are now full speed ahead to meet our original target of weatherizing 600,000 homes nationwide.”
Biden visited Manchester, where the “DuPont family," no doubt distantly related to one of the richest families in America is expected to save over $600 a year on their utility bills once their weatherization project is completed, according to the White House. The news release issued by the White House went on to say that New Hampshire (being one of the coldest states) has been a leader in the federal weatherization program with more than 1,000 homes that have been re-insulated since June
After ramping up last year, the Weatherization Assistance Program is now weatherizing homes at about 25,000 a month. The White House Making Home Affordable plan intended to modify between four and five million homes when it was originally launched 20 months ago is responsible for less than 500,000 mortgage modifications, a figure that critics of the plan find laughable.
In fairness, the weatherization program is credited with creating thousands of jobs, according to the White House, supporting 13,000 jobs in the second quarter of the year, including 120 new jobs in New Hampshire. Maybe Biden should have made a point of that as he sells the Obama administration’s program across the country and left the DuPonts out of the picture.

Religion has no placed in modern society. By Brava
I am certain that modern society will benefit from an environment of education, diversity, respect and that religion will only continue to regress it citizens.
Can you imagine?
A world without Religion!
According to The Journal of Religion and Society: prosperous societies with higher rates of belief in, and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, Drug used, inequality, teen pregnancy, abortion and discrimination.
The question I ask is how religion has affected your life?
When you think of an answer reflect on it. I can tell you that no matter if you practice any form of organized religion or not somehow your life has been affected either in a positive or in a negative way.
My purpose today is to encourage you to open your mind to new information and to understand the negative effect of religion throughout history.
I want to establish evidence to convince you to open your mind and to understand that religion is a personal choice and it has not place in Modern Society.
Because the topic of religion is so controversial it has a great deal of opposition to my view. A great thing to start a conversation and learn about each others point s of view.
For example, many religious organizations argue that religion and morals go hand and hand. They also argue that a society without religion is more likely to fail because United State has always been a religious country. That argument is baseless and history has shown the contrary. why should be any different now?
I defend my point by showing you how our country is falling behind, in education, technology, social diversity, equality, progress and economics. Have you ask your self; How many societies had failed because they base their government on religion? ex. Spain, Germany, Russia, United States, China, etc… It is a fact that throughout history religion has been the cause of many crimes committed against humanity. Great example to that is, the holocaust, the inquisition, the crusade, September 11, Radical Muslims beheading, and slavery. Furthermore there is a large list of dictators who were completely religious or even if there were atheist they base the government on religious misinformation and fear.
The outcome of their government does not need to be explain, they are responsible for over 20,000,000 millions of death and few examples come to mind.
Francisco Franco Spain-1939-1975 Fascist died in office.
Joseph Stalin USSR-1924-1953 Communist -Revolutionary regime
died in office.
Adolph Hitler Germany -1933-1945 Fascist World War II, Jewish Holocaust
Mao Tse-Tung China-1945-1976 Communist Revolutionary regime died in office
Moreover, United State had eight years of President George Walker Bush, who is consider to be one of the most religious President of our time. His presidency left behind a country full of disgrace, failing economic, two wars, inequality, and the worst education rate in history.
When are we going to learn? How many people have to continue dying? before we realize that our country should be complete secular. Education and equality should be our most important priority.
Another important point is the examples of many secular countries that are very prosperous regardless of their secular view of the world and the commitment to keep Church separate from their government. i.e Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Iceland, Bahamas, Finland, Sweden, Bhutan, Brunei, Canada etc…. These countries have moral values and civil order and there are consider to be very successful and happy.
There is an article in time magazine by Iva Skoch title "Least Religious countries", were he explain how non-religious countries are strongly correlated with high levels of societal health, such as low homicide rates, low poverty rates, low infant mortality rates, and low illiteracy rates, as well as high levels of educational attainment, per capita income, and gender equality. Most nations characterized by high degrees of individual and societal security have the highest rates of organic atheism.
Also According to Richard Dawkins author’ of the bestseller “God Delusion” he explain how secular societies show advancement and are not less moral that those religious society. Religion should be a personal choice and should not have any part on our government and society as a whole.
The problem with our society is that it dedicates too much time worrying about personal believes, who is sleeping with who, is this person gay or straight and is failing to get the new generation adapt to the new world of diversity and understanding. Moreover our children are not finishing their schools well educated because lack of resources and well prepared teachers. We are loosing our edge and eventually we would not be able to be competitive with the rest of the world.
The controversy around religion and society has been a part of our lives for generations and it has always been a important factor to human development and growth; however it is time to open our mind and to find a common ground were people worship whoever they want in the privacy of their home and allow the government to go on with its business without interference of any type of influence by religion.
Separation of church and state is a matter of diversity, open-mindedness, respect and a legacy for our future.

Telford women who traded sex for cigarettes accused of filing false rape report because the didn't like itTELFORD - Two women from Telford have been arrested for allegedly filing a false report of rape - then later admitting the sex was consensual in exchange for a pack of cigarettes.
One of the women allegedly told police they decided to file the report because they "didn't enjoy the sex."
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the women reported they went outside their home at 255 Browning Road, Telford, when they heard barking dogs. Jessica Kathleen Alexander, 18, and Tammy Nicole Ortego, 29, said two men then threw them to the ground and raped them.
However, police said both women later recanted their original story.
They allegedly admitted they had met a man on a telephone chat line and then met him for sex. In exchange, the man - who police say was previously unknown to the women - gave them one pack of cigarettes.
The WCSO said Alexander advised they filed the report because they "didn't enjoy the sex."
Both women were arrested and charged with filing a false police report. Ortego was charged with an additional count of the offense in connection with a report of arson at her home on Nov. 11, 2009. She allegedly admitted to giving false information in that investigation as well.
Ortego was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond, while Alexander's bond was set at $5,000. They are each scheduled for arraignment this morning.
Police say an investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are pending.

Michael Moore speaks at George Washington University about his new film “Capitalism: A Love Story”. Chad Swarthout, senior at GWU, asks a question about free market economics and the government’s role in it, and Moore admits easily that the system we have now is not true capitalism
Apparently, Moore’s motivation is “what little optimism he has left” in the very system that he admits is flawed and probably a direct cause of today’s economic and political crises.
Moore fails to ever address the original question, so here it is again, Michael, in paraphrase:
Is a free market and a system of private property, which is essentially capitalism, really the problem? Or is it really the fact that we give too much power to the government in which big businesses have a heavy hand in?

Robert Jones is the guy who followed his navigation device in his BMW down a path so narrow that only folks walking their dogs used it. The real problem wasn't that he followed the nav down a walking path, but the path ended in a cliff.
The only thing that kept the man from falling off the cliff was a sturdy wire fence. Jones was found to be guilty of undue care for following the sat nav down such an obviously dangerous path.
Then he was fined £370, ordered to pay the £500 recovery costs, a £15 victim surcharge and hit with six penalty points. He should have been publically humiliated too, what a goober.Robert Jones is the guy who followed his navigation device in his BMW down a path so... more
