Costs are up for public, private, two and four year schools, you name it, it's up.
I'm newly married, and I've always wanted to have 3 kids...but my husband and I have actually discussed whether it's a fair or responsible thing to bring kids into this world, given the cost of education, the state this planet is likely to be in etc. Maybe we're being overly-dramatic, and perhaps the concerns of children that our parents faced were as real, but somehow, I think child-rearing is a more daunting task today than in the past.Costs are up for public, private, two and four year schools, you name it, it's... more

Michele Hernandez boasts that 95% of her teenage clients are accepted by their first-choice school. Her price: As much as $40,000 a student
As I listened to my 8th period English teacher drone on for the third time about how Finny, a character in A Separate Peace, was indeed the main character although he was not the narrator, it finally dawned on me that this was not the exciting world of high school that I had hoped for.
This is how Andrew Garza began an essay in his application to Haverford College. It was a 1,200-word piece that established him as an intellectually curious young man. It was crafted to appeal specifically to the admissions officers at the small liberal arts school. And it was the idea of his high-priced college admissions coach, Michele A. Hernandez. Garza attended a private school in Switzerland, and that worried Hernandez: She thought he might appear to be a privileged teenager without much substance. So she advised him to write about why he had left his public high school in suburban New Jersey. "We had to make it seem like he didn't want to be around so many rich kids. We spun a whole story about him taking the initiative to leave in order to broaden his experience," Hernandez says. "It was his initiative. But he wouldn't have written about it."Michele Hernandez boasts that 95% of her teenage clients are accepted by their... more

It's good to see today's youth (which I hope still includes my 26 year old self) taking a stand and being more proactive, as opposed to just sitting around complaining (like i do on my blog!). but at the same time i feel their youthful exuberance betrays them...copyright and other intellectual property laws, while currently flawed and in need of an update to properly take into account modern technology, serves very important purposes. in fact, the entire premise behind IP law is to provide an incentive to create by giving the creators certain rights in their work.
free music, books, art, and so on would be nice...but it's also just not very practical. a balance is necessary and in the end, quality products (ranging from music to pharmaceuticals) must come at fair and reasonable prices. it's getting to this balance that is difficult. It's good to see today's youth (which I hope still includes my 26 year old... more

In this article, Tom Friedman is practically begging college students to get off the computer and take real political action. Virtual activism is just that -- he says -- virtual. There are too many problems being created right now that will affect youth down the road. From climate change, to social security and healthcare costs, to a rising deficit -- students need to be asking candidates the right questions in a continuously louder voice. In this article, Tom Friedman is practically begging college students to get off the... more
