NEW YORK — Normally so cool, so consistent, so in control of his emotions and his matches, Roger Federer let the U.S. Open championship slip from his grasp.
Two points from victory against inexperienced, unheralded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, two points from a sixth consecutive title at Flushing Meadows and a record-extending 16th Grand Slam overall, Federer, quite simply, fell apart Monday.NEW YORK — Normally so cool, so consistent, so in control of his emotions and his... more

Roger Federer claimed his record 15th grand slam crown and sixth Wimbledon title as he beat Andy Roddick 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 in an epic final on Sunday.
Federer's five-set triumph sees him surpass Pete Sampras, who was watching on Centre Court, but he was pushed to the very limits by his big-serving opponent, with the climax coming in a marathon 30-game fifth set.
Leading 15-14, Federer forced his first match point against a tiring opponent who mishit a forehand to give him victory after over four hours.
Victory will also see Federer reclaim the world number one spot from Rafael Nadal, who beat him in last year's final but missed this year's championships through injury.

After an unexpected four days of uninterrupted play, and blissful sunshine at the championships now sadly, the experts say rain is on its way.
So the multi-million pound roof will be put to the test for the first time. It was shut on Thursday night in a super-efficient 8 minute ceremony. And if it stays closed Roger Federer will become the first player to play under its spooky gloom.
I wonder if the atmosphere is enhanced inside the stadium with the roof shut. The Millennium stadium is an amazing place with the roof closed and the noise just thunders round. After an unexpected four days of uninterrupted play, and blissful sunshine at the... more
Rafa Nadal ground Roger Federer's dreams of a record-equalling 14th grand slam singles crown into dust on Sunday, triumphing in a pulsating five-set Australian Open final.
The Mallorcan muscleman added the Melbourne Park trophy to his French and Wimbledon titles with an epic 7-5 3-6 7-6 3-6 6-2 victory under floodlights, a victory which pierced Federer's heart and left the Swiss in tears.Rafa Nadal ground Roger Federer's dreams of a record-equalling 14th grand slam singles... more
Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 22, has won his first Australian Open Championship and his sixth Grand Slam title, leaving a devastated Roger Federer, 27, in tears for not being able to obtain a 14th victory, which would have allowed him to match Peter Sampras's 14th victory record.
"'God it's killing me,' he said, eventually backing away from the microphone.
But this historic rivalry, one of the best in any sport, is also a friendly rivalry, despite all the power and spin these two well-mannered young men employ against each other when they are on opposite sides of a net. So it was no surprise that Nadal, the first Spanish player to win the Australian championships, was soon putting his left arm around Federer, putting his head against his and helping him pull himself back together just long enough to finish the speech.
'I don't want to have the last word; this guy deserves it,' Federer said. 'So Rafa, congratulations. You played incredible. You deserve it man.'
It is difficult to argue with that last sentence. To even reach the final, the top-seeded Nadal had to win the longest match in Australian Open history in the semifinals: a five-set, five-hour-and-14-minute classic against his compatriot Fernando Verdasco. He then had one day less than the second-seeded Federer to prepare for the 19th installment of their rivalry: undergoing intense physical therapy in an attempt to recover the freshness of mind and body required to repulse a man on a mission."Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 22, has won his first Australian Open Championship and his... more

These are times, as you watch the young Swiss play, when the jaw drops and eyes protrude and sounds are made that bring spouses in from other rooms to see if you’re O.K.

So says MSN who calculate this month Roger Federer will lose his number one ranking, a lofty spot he's occupied since since February 2004, for a record of 235 consecutive weeks.
Young whippersnapper Nadal will replace Federer at the top of the world rankings.
The Spaniard didn't win the Master's Title in Cincinnati last week (that was secured by our own Andy Murray) but has still notched up enough points to become world No. 1.
Roger says he doesn't care.

Nothing makes sports more entertaining than a great rivalry and that is exactly what Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are starting to build. Although Federer has dominated the rest of the tennis world by winning the lion share of the titles and prize money, Nadal has been able to beat the worlds number one ranked player on many surfaces and under the brightest of spotlights. Their match at Wimbledon this year will likely go down in history as one of the best matches of this or any era. Five grueling sets lasted four hours and forty-eight minutes (a men's Wimbledon finals record) and left Rafael Nadal as the champion.Nothing makes sports more entertaining than a great rivalry and that is exactly what... more

Rafael Nadal won his fifth Grand Slam title by knocking off five-time defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in five thrilling sets.
Nadal fell short the first two times he faced Federer in the Wimbledon finals, but he held on to win this time around, pulling off a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 upset. He became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season.
Sunday's encounter was the sixth Grand Slam title match between the No. 1-ranked Federer and No. 2 Nadal, more than for any other pair of men in the 40-year Open era.

..."you can't win them all?" Well Roger Federer doesn't really understand that phrase. He has been winning them all or at least getting to the finals in the past 10 straight Grand Slams. That is ridiculous! Well that streak ended yesterday when Roger Federer lost to third-seeded Novak Djokovic (joke-a-vitch, haha...). Djokovic will now meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (who?) in the finals of the Australian Open. My money is on Tsonga, well maybe not my money but I'll be rooting for him.
