We are Occupy Dame Street, part of Occupy Ireland and the global Occupy movement.

The morning of 25th January, 2012 - 06:30 GMT , in response to the payment of €1.25 billion to unknown bondholders of the former Anglo Irish bank, Occupy Dame Street activists peacefully locked down the Irish Department of Finance and made every effort to keep the building locked down until 5pm.

This €1.25 billion euro payment is only part of a larger €30 billion euro giveaway to as yet un-named investors / gamblers. We call on the people of Ireland to start planning resistance in your own areas to the unfair and unnecessary burden of bond/promissory payments; and to wage cuts and service reductions that, if not stopped, will further impoverish the good people of this Island nation.

Even under the terms of the treasonous bank bail-out agreement, there was and is no expectation that the people of Ireland make these payments. The agreement to pay, we believe, is a personal choice by the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, reflecting very much his own deferential nature. We believe that the Minister for Finance, his cabinet colleagues, all government back bench TD’s and all those who have colluded with private banking interests have failed to realise the power of defiance and resistance.

Instead they have cowed to the bondholders and criminal consortiums who demand the profit from the labour of the Irish people, who demand the deconstruction of our health and education systems to fund their game of monopoly. Threats that there will be no money in the ATM’s of Ireland are without foundation, this has not been the experience of many other nations who refused to pay such as Iceland, Argentina and Singapore to name a few, all of which are experiencing buoyant economic growth in the teeth of this so called crisis.

We hope today’s and future actions will put powder in the gun Noonan takes with him to the IMF/ECB bankers table. We refuse to stand by as the Irish people, our families, friends and neighbours, are made debt slaves to the IMF/ECB, as has happened in so many other nations in which they have arrested power from the people.

In the coming year, and for many years to come, the Irish people, by character a hard working and generous people, will transfer under duress, €6 billion euro per year to faceless money changers. The figures are almost unimaginable and the loss to the good people of this island will be devastating.

It is for this reason that we, Occupy Dame Street, and other Occupy movements throughout the Island of Ireland, are embarking on a radical campaign of peaceful direct actions. Through such direct actions we hope to raise awareness of the reality of what is happening to our community, the unnecessary depravation for so many, that is today’s Ireland. We also hope to inspire and build a peaceful resistance movement dedicated to empowering the community of Ireland to make real the demands of Occupy Dame Street such as the realising of the potential of our natural resources and the acknowledgement of our shared intelligence and abilities through Peoples General Assemblies.

We call on the people of Ireland, political and apolitical, old and young, male and female, of every ethnic, cultural and religious background, to start planning for resistance in your own areas. If you are in the Suburbs of Dublin, Limerick, Cobh, Galway, Waterford, Letterkenny, Dundalk , Belfast or the many other urban communities of Ireland, start planning peaceful acts of resistance.

If you are in the farmland parishes of Ireland, the hills of Wicklow, the plains of Meath, the rocky outposts of Kerry or on our beautiful Islands, start talking and planning. EU signs ACTA, global internet censorship treaty

Today, the European Union and 22 member states signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced. They have now joined the US and seven other nations that signed the treaty last October.

This signing ceremony merely formalized the EU’s adoption of ACTA last month, during a completely unrelated meeting on agriculture and fisheries, reports TechDirt.

Though initiated by the US, Japan is the official depository of the treaty.

Removal of the Three Strikes clause, in which users accused of three counts of piracy would be barred from the internet, paved the way for the EU to adopt ACTA last month.

Related to ACTA, a chapter in the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) “would have state signatories adopt even more restrictive copyright measures than ACTA,” reports the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Both ACTA and TPP were developed without public input and outside international trade groups, like the World Trade Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Leaked cables published by WikiLeaks in 2009 exposed early drafts of ACTA, resulting in a firestorm of controversy. Those cables, coupled with later releases, showed that ACTA negotiationsbegan in 2006 and were controversial even to participating states. ACTA Violates Magna Carta and US Constitution

Like PIPA and SOPA, two domestic internet censorship bills that prompted major websites to blacken their name or website in a Jan. 18th protest, ACTA allows accusers of copyright infringement to bypass judicial review. Lack of “due process” makes these bills and ACTA unconstitutional and violates the Magna Carta, a charter signed in 1215 on which most Western law is based, including the US Constitution. It is often cited as the most important legal document in the history of democracy....

Obama to bail out Europe?

Officially it never was called an "Emergency summit." But with the European currency only days from collapse according to many economists, it was clear that European leaders came to beg the American president for help.
A closed-door conversation today between US President Barack Obama and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso dealt with, among other things, the ongoing crisis that is spreading out of the Eurozone and into the United States.
And according to statements courtesy of Obama, the time of American intervention could be coming soon, and at a monumental cost to the American public.
The European debt crisis, says the president, is of “huge importance” to the United States, and the Obama administration is “ready to do our part” in keeping the economy overseas afloat.
As Obama attempts to postpone the impeding crumbling of the American economy — and his own administration — the president could propose a bailout to the countries of the European Union that could cost taxpayers upwards of trillions. Given that RT reported earlier today on the massive bailout extended from the Federal Reserve to the biggest banks in the country between 2008 and 2010, an offering of trillions couldn’t be out of the question.
What could be, however, are the details of the deal.
Three years after the Fed first helped out the big banks, only today was it revealed that nearly $8 trillion went to the “too big to fail” institutions to prevent just that — a massive failure. With a failure overseas impacting the worldwide economy, Obama’s comments today could imply that American funds will go to preventing a collapse of the dozen-plus countries tied to the Euro.
A collapse of the Euro could cause detrimental consequences for the American economy — an economy that has proved unstable as most evident in the unemployment rate that seems to have stayed dire since Obama entered office in 2009. In hopes of securing the presidency during the 2012 election, Obama could stand to benefit by investing in the Euro and keeping those countries tied to the currency afloat. With closed-door talks and secret deals bringing forth these talks, however, discrete deals between his administration and European officials could cause concern for American voters over the president’s alleged transparency.
Also in question is whether or not America — teetering between a rebound readmission of a recession — can afford to invest upwards of trillions into foreign nations.
Failure to compromise on the country’s deficit dilemma by the congressional supercommittee caused a Capitol Hill freakout last week, and is slated to trigger over a trillion automatic spending cuts come 2013. With the country currently up in arms over those cuts — and how to handle them — a bailout for the Eurozone could come as a nail in the coffin for the president’s campaign for reelection. On the other hand, should Obama extend money to the EU, the Euro could become stabilized and lend to a resurgence of the American dollar.
“Could” is the keyword here.
"The events in Europe obviously have an impact on our economy. It's created a headwind for much of the year … and continues to create that headwind," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Monday. While the administration has acknowledged the impact both domestically and abroad of the crumbling Euro, Obama’s comments this afternoon are only the first to suggest that an intervention by way of the American dollar could be on the way.
"This is something they need to solve and they have the capacity to solve, both financial capacity and political will," Carney adds of today’s summit.
Carney adds that "We do not in any way believe that additional resources are required from the United States and from American taxpayers.”
