Iconic British artist Damien Hirst has entered the records books after an auction of his works raised £70.5 million ($127 million). And he's set to make even more money, since that windfall came from selling 56 works and there's still 160 lots to be sold.
The figure far exceeded the 62.4 million estimate made before the start of the auction. Hirst sold the bulk of work directly, bypassing art galleries who usually charge up to 50% commission on the sale price.
The auction is a new record for a sale dedicated to one artist, beating Pablo Picasso's record set in 1993 when 88 of the Spanish artist's works were sold for a total of 20 million dollars.
Hirst seemed happy with the result, saying: "I love art and this proves I'm not alone and the future looks great for everyone!"

Angus Fairhurst, one of the original YBAs who changed the face of British art in the 1990s, has taken his own life in a remote area of Scottish woodland at the age of 41. Fellow artist Damien Hirst paide tribute, hailing Fairhurst as a "great artist and a great friend."
Fairhurst was one of the 16 Goldsmiths College students who took part in the 1988 exhibition Freeze, mainly organised by second-year Damien Hirst. It was the seminal event for the YBAs, and launched numerous careers of artists, including Sarah Lucas and Gary Hume.
Sir Nicholas Serota, director of Tate, said: "Angus Fairhurst was always deprecating about his own talent, but he made some of the most engaging, witty and perceptive works of his generation and was an enormously influential friend of other British artists who came to prominence in the early nineties. We shall all miss him greatly."
