When Kellogg's dumped its endorsement of Michael Phelps after a photograph surfaced of the Olympic gold medalist using a bong, the company was stuck with thousands of boxes of cereal featuring the swimmer's image.
No problem. The company, based in Battle Creek, Michigan, made short order of the already-printed and filled boxes, donating two tons of cereal to the San Francisco Food Bank late last month. When Kellogg's dumped its endorsement of Michael Phelps after a photograph surfaced of... more
A new study concludes that the economic crisis is having devastating effects on some New Yorkers, especially children. The report, titled "Child Hunger: The Unhealthy Return On Missed Investments," was released by the Food Bank and found that one of every five children in New York City (50 percent higher than the national average) lives in poverty and that one of every four children requires assistance from emergency food programs. The Food Bank reports that it helped feed 397,000 New York families in 2007, a 48 percent increase from 2004.

What does hunger have to do with poverty? A child who is unequipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to be poor as an adult. Many adults who receive assistance from Food Banks have to choose between buying food or paying rent. Many senior citizens who receive assistance from food banks have to choose between buying food or paying for medication. (America's Second Harvest - hunger statistics www.secondharvest.org )
Clearly, one small part of getting rid of poverty is feeding the hungry. Helping your local food bank is a good way to combine resources and help your community thrive.
I'm starting a food drive for the SF food bank, and I'm going to show you how easy it is to do it. I will be posting updates regularly on this month-long event.
