In a harrowing new ad made by MoveOn.org, 'House' star Lisa Edelstein takes on Republican legislation that would severely reduce women's reproductive rights.
As she walks down a long hallway dressed in 50s garb, Edelstein narrates the ad:
"Decades ago, women suffered through horrifying back alley abortions. Or, they used dangerous methods when they had no other recourse. So when the Republican Party launched an all out assault on women's health, pushing bills to limit access to vital services, why is the GOP trying to send women back ... to the back alley?"
The ad closes with a shot of Edelstein dressed in modern clothes, desperately reaching for a coat hanger in the closet.
Nancy Pelosi has also spoken out against the proposed pieces of legislation, which would punish employers for providing insurance that includes abortion access, allow hospitals to turn away women who need abortions to save their own lives and end Title X, a federal grant program that supports family-planning organizations like Planned Parenthood.
"They're advancing extreme legislation," Pelosi said. "It's dangerous to women's health, disrespects the judgment of American women -- I don't know if they even gave that a thought -- and it's the most comprehensive and radical assault on women's health in our lifetime. It's that bad."
On Tuesday, lawmakers in South Dakota moved to expand the definition of "justifiable homicide" to include the killing of people who intend to harm a fetus.

A protest this afternoon at Target’s corporate headquarters, 1000 Nicollet Mall, culminated in an attempt to deliver to CEO Gregg Steinhafel 260,000 petitions, each urging the retailer to stop donating to political candidates.
The demonstration, organized by the progressive political action committee MoveOn, came on the heels of a $150,000 donation Target had made to MN Forward, a pro-business group that is backing Republican Tom Emmer’s bid for governor. The donation has triggered calls for boycotts from GLBT groups, who cite Emmer’s socially conservative stance on gay-rights issues.
Seinhafel issued an official apology to customers and employees yesterday, saying “I realize our decision affected many of you in a way I did not anticipate, and for that I am genuinely sorry.”
On July 29, MoveOn began gathering signatures online for a protest petition. In the following week, the group generated phone calls to Target headquarters and flooded the retailer’s Facebook page with complaints.
Around noon today, MoveOn’s Bob Brereton arrived at Target headquarters with hard copies of the 260,000 petition signatures. The print-outs filled three cardboard boxes, which Brereton had stacked on a dolly.
Randi Reitan, the now-famous Target boycotter whose checkout line tirade went viral on YouTube, addressed the crowd. Standing alongside her husband Philip and their son Jacob, a gay rights activist, Reitan decried the donation as an insensitive assault on its gay customers and employees.
“As a shopper at Target, their contribution was in part my money, and it was being used to attack the civil rights of my son,” she said. “Corporations are not people, and they should not attempt to buy an election which rightly belongs to the people.”
Philip Reitan described Emmer as “the most anti-gay person you can imagine running for governor.”A protest this afternoon at Target’s corporate headquarters, 1000 Nicollet Mall,... more

If you are so inclined to believe that a health care bill should not just be a boon for the insurance industry, sign the petition at the link below. A public option would keep the insurance industry in check.
The election in Massachucetts should not be considered a mandate. It should be considered what it was, an inept campaign by the Democratic candidate in a state that already has a pretty good health care program.
If you are with me on this, sign the petition.
Thank you for your time.
Help pass real health care reform
Hi,
After Tuesday's election, President Obama and some Democrats in Congress are now considering scaling back health care reform.
That would be a huge mistake--so MoveOn is launching an emergency campaign to save health care reform.
Step one is running a newspaper ad with thousands of names of folks calling on Democrats to step up and pass real reform with a public option.
I just added my name to the ad--will you join me at the link below?.

Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-CT) staunch refusal to support both the public option and the Medicare buy-in compromise, thereby killing both programs, has sent the progressive base into a fury, eager to toss him out of office.
The liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org on Thursday announced that it had raised more than $1 million in a campaign drive to target Joe Lieberman for "single-handedly gutting health reform," as they accused him of doing in their first e-mail to members Tuesday.
"First, we're going to launch a huge ad campaign," Tuesday's e-mail read, "to make sure every last Connecticut voter knows that Senator Lieberman is blocking strong reforms. Then, we'll push Senate leaders to strip him of his chairmanship and seniority. Finally, we'll work to defeat him in his next election."
"Joe Lieberman can't be allowed to stay in the U.S. Senate," MoveOn declared.Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-CT) staunch refusal to support both the public option and... more

Joining recent condemnations by the Obama White House, Democratic political action group MoveOn.org is urging its network to petition Democrats in congress against appearing on Fox News at all until the start of next year.
"Democrats often appear on FOX in hopes of reaching out to conservative viewers. But FOX cuts off their mic, distorts what they say, or runs biased headlines at the bottom of the screen," the group said in a recent mass e-mail. "In the end, Democrats always lose on FOX."
The e-mail references a New York Times article in claiming that President Obama will not be appearing on Fox News until 2010.Joining recent condemnations by the Obama White House, Democratic political action... more

This is a very unfortunate day for all Americans who wish to know the full extent to which our Constitutional Rights have been waved in how the War on Terror has been waged. Moving forward under a cloud of suspicion is not putting the past behind us; it's simply turning a blind eye to corruption at the highest levels. Is this obstruction of justice, aiding and abetting, or signal of how this administration plans to continue in step with the last? Move-On.org and the entire liberal blogosphere that helped Obama win should be raising the roof about this. A public outcry at least as loud as for the initial TARP fund should be raised. Obama needs to hear from us.
Despite President Obama's vow to open government more than ever, the Justice Department is defending Bush administration decisions to keep secret many documents about domestic wiretapping, data collection on travelers and U.S. citizens, and interrogation of suspected terrorists. This is a very unfortunate day for all Americans who wish to know the full extent to... more

John McCain has not yet released his medical records to the public. McCain is 72 years old, and has been diagnosed with invasive melanoma. In May of this year, a small group of selected reporters were allowed to review 1,173 pages of McCain's medical records that covered only the last eight years, and were allowed only three hours to do so. John McCain's health is an issue of profound importance. We call on John McCain to issue a full, public disclosure of all of his medical records, available for the media and members of the general public to review.

MoveOn.org has launched a new pro-Obama ad targeting young voters that will air on MTV and Comedy Central.
The ad is the first campaign advertising to run nationally on Comedy Central. Tony Fox, a spokesman for the network, told the New York Times "he did not know why the cable channel had not accepted political advocacy advertising before, but said of the decision to do so now: 'Political advertising in an election year is good business.'"
He also said that this particular spot, produced by members of MoveOn.org Political Action, the liberal action group, was humorous and would be a good fit with Comedy Central's young, politically sophisticated audience. It is entitled "It Could Happen to You" and features Rider Strong, the former star of "Boy Meets World," and Amber Benson of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
MoveOn will spend $150,000 to run it for one week on Comedy Central and MTV, which had not accepted political advertising for more than a decade but reversed that policy a month ago. Both MTV and Comedy Central are owned by Viacom Networks, which has generally weathered the current advertising downturn better than some of its competitors.
Here's the ad:
More from MoveOn's press release:
"It Could Happen To You" was the winner for "funniest video" in MoveOn's recent "Obama in 30 Seconds" ad contest. The ad was produced by and features Rider Strong, former star of "Boy Meets World." Also in the ad is Amber Benson, best known as Tara Maclay on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
MoveOn's ad is in part a response to the airing of an anti-Obama ad from a conservative group last week, also on MTV.
"Young people are naturally progressive, tech-savvy, and hopeful people, so it's no wonder they are becoming MoveOn members" said Peter Koechley, a former editor of the Onion and co-director of MoveOn's youth outreach efforts. "In the next 99 days, MoveOn.org is going to spend a whole lot of time and money making sure that the trend we saw in the primaries of doubling and tripling turnout among young voters continues into November for Barack Obama."
Story continues below

MoveOn.org has almost a million members under 35 and aims to add another 500,000 through the course of this election. MoveOn's young voter outreach efforts include:
-- Developing a new model for online advertising focusing on persuasion. With TV capturing dwindling numbers of young people, MoveOn is committed to advertising where young people are: on Facebook, MySpace and other sites popular with young people on the internet as well as through search ads.
-- Developing a new suite of online political tools to continue to lead the way in on-line organizing.
-- Developing a new social network canvassing GOTV model. Young people are harder to target using traditional methods of knocking on doors, making phone calls, and sending mail. MoveOn will leverage online social networks to turnout young voters. We're building online tools to allow our members to register and then turnout out their friends and peers (for example, www.votepoke.org).

A video and petition against Fox News.
"You're not going to believe what FOX is up to now—we could hardly believe it ourselves. Not only are they smearing Michelle Obama with racist stereotypes, but then they offer a feeble apology that they believe gives them the right to slander her again. That's what happened when FOX called Michelle and Barack Obama's fist bump a "terrorist fist jab," apologized, and then less than a week later referred to Michelle Obama as Barack's "Baby Mama."
FOX's long history of racism is nothing new, but it has been particularly egregious when it comes to their coverage of the Obamas. Racism and fearmongering have no place in our country or its politics, despite what FOX would have you believe. That's why we put together this video, FOX Attacks Michelle Obama.
We cannot allow FOX's heinous smears and scare tactics to continue. Sign our petition and stop FOX from injecting racism, prejudice, and fear into our political dialogue. Then, send it to all your friends and family members for them to sign as well. And spread it on sites like Digg to create an uproar.
We cannot allow FOX to make politics about stereotypes, misinformation, and flat-out dishonesty. Not now. Not ever."A video and petition against Fox News.

If you're an Obama fan bit by the filmmaking bug, time is running out to put the finishing touches on your video entry for MoveOn.org's "Obama in 30 Seconds" contest.
The liberal advocacy group is offering a grand prize of $20,000 in video equipment for the best user-contributed 30-second-spot, which the organization plans on airing on television in Pennsylvania. Celebrity judges include Oliver Stone and Larry Lessig. April 15 is the submission deadline.
Wired.com recently followed a ragtag crew of filmmakers as they shot their entry on the streets of Oakland, California. The finished ad shows a young mother walking uncertainly past the scene of a traffic accident, reluctant to get involved. Will the pleading expression on her daughter's moppet face make her realize that, Yes, She Can help build a better tomorrow … or at least pull the guy from the twisted wreakage of his car before it explodes? If you're an Obama fan bit by the filmmaking bug, time is running out to put the... more
