Centuries ago, Native Americans discovered a pleasant spot on the banks of the Merrimack River. They called it "Namoskeag," which translates loosely to "the good fishing place." The anglers have long since passed on, and the locality is now better known as Manchester, N.H. Time to add another title: best cheap city in the U.S.
The Manchester-Nashua metro area ranks first on our list of America's 100 Cheapest Places To Live. Among the U.S. cities with the most affordable housing and lowest cost of living, the Queen City offers the best combination of safety, employment opportunity and general quality of life. Once an industrial mill town, Manchester (pop. 402,000) has reinvented itself as a haven for those repelled by the high price of living and doing business in other New England states.
"You have a lot of Massachusetts companies going there because of the low cost," says Eduardo Martinez, senior economist at Moody's Economy.com. "It makes sense for companies to scout that out as a location. The tax situation is a lot better."
A lot better--there are no sales or income taxes in New Hampshire, fitting for a state whose motto is "Live Free or Die." Though the lack of taxes hasn't lured many corporate headquarters, Martinez notes that it has convinced companies like BEA Systems ( BEAS - news - people )--which already has a large presence in Boston--to set up back-office operations in the Granite State.Centuries ago, Native Americans discovered a pleasant spot on the banks of the... more

Long-time but little-known Republican candidate Vermin Supreme has once again thrown his hat into the presidential ring with a platform as serious as his costume. Feeling politicians are fear-mongering, Mr. Supreme satirically pledges to protect America from a zombie attack. With no media budget, Mr. Supreme builds his visibility on personally scouring the streets of New Hampshire on the state's primary day.Long-time but little-known Republican candidate Vermin Supreme has once again thrown... more

Firstly, it is good to see Mr. Edwards getting a bit more coverage. Secondly, I want to wish him well tomorrow in NH and I hope that his message that speaks to the heart of what America is about resonates with NH voters. He seems to be the only candidate who truly gets the climate crisis as well, and for that as well as his stance in fighting poverty and corporate greed get him my vote come Feb.5th.Firstly, it is good to see Mr. Edwards getting a bit more coverage. I'll be honest, we didn't get much yesterday--the troops are tired and spirits are a bit low. But all the candidates were locked up in their hotel room yesterday preparing for the big debate--that's over now and today they've got to explain themselves--and for our sake, its got to be directed at us... Starting Friday at 11pm EST, Current will be airing a special half hour each night leading up to the New Hampshire Primary on Tuesday! This is the kick-off to our Election coverage...where we're focusing on the issues that affect Americans, not the he-said she-said from the candidates (we figured you were already getting plenty of that). We've invited some CJ contributors to come with us, and we'll have a Current Lounge for people to come leave their Viewpoints. We're here, it's freezing, and we want you to watch!
