“Live is not easy,” Seth Meyers said.
Ironically, he wasn’t talking about his day job, as SNL head writer and Weekend Update anchor. Actually, the “live” he referred to was the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ “An Evening With Saturday Night Live” event, held at New York’s Pierre Hotel last month.
When all the participants were seated, they discovered one of the mics didn’t work. And to make matters perfect, that mic belonged to Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator and executive producer. But matters soon were straightened out and, much to the delight of a packed house, the ensemble went on to discuss everything from the advice Michaels gives new cast members to the advice he gets from his mother.

Saturday Night Live this weekend opened with a sketch featuring Fred Armisen's (sorry, very poor) impression of Obama. The gist of the sketch was this: We lost the Olympics to Rio and that's just another in a long line of things the President has not succeeding in accomplishing.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love making fun of the President. This President, the last President, any President - it's one of the truly awesome things about being Americans - the freedom to poke fun at those in power. But this sketch rang a little false to me. An unnecessarily cheap shot, perhaps.
For instance - from the list of things Obama said he'd do as presented in the sketch:
- Close Guantanamo Bay (Not Done) - The President pledged to close Gitmo in 12 months, right? Not in 9?
- Out of Iraq (Not Done) - Don't we have a timeline for withdrawal by 2011 (and ending the combat mission in 2010)?
- Improve Afghanistan (Worse) - All right, SNL. This one I'll give you.
You get the idea. So here's the question - are these low blows? Cheap shots in a not particularly funny sketch? Or is this an important signal - that Obama's agenda must have really come off the rails if its fodder for this level of SNL sketch?

"Saturday Night Live" opened its show with a particularly harsh send-up of President Obama last night. The critique focused on failed promises, as a checklist repeatedly appeared to the right of the screen that had "NOT DONE" checked off next to the following categories: global warming, immigration reform, gays in the military, limits on executive powers, torture prosecutions, closing Gitmo, withdrawing from Iraq, improving the status of the fight in Afghanistan, health care reform, etc.
"There are those on the right who are angry. They think that I'm turning this great country into something that resembles the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany, but that's just not the case. Because when you look at my record it's very clear what I've done so far and that is nothing. Nada. Almost one year and nothing to show for it."
While the president is three and a half months shy of his one year mark, we get the point. The sketch made clear that this is a critique of Obama from the left: "I just don't see why the right is so riled up, I mean how do you think the left feels. They're the ones who should be mad." And the writers pointed out that with a super majority in the Senate, getting his agenda through shouldn't be a particularly difficult undertaking."Saturday Night Live" opened its show with a particularly harsh send-up of... more
