Dinner guests chew on modern day obesity panics and the obsession with our eating habits. Fellow diner and author of Panic on a plate, Rob Lyons casts a critical glance at the very notion of ‘junk food’ and argues that there is no such thing. Instead, he suggests, we are now living longer, healthier and better lives as a result of industrial scale food production and the availability of fast food. Do you agree?Dinner guests chew on modern day obesity panics and the obsession with our eating... more

We need your help. Helena Najas de Coronel needs to be nomnated as Hero of the Year with CNNs Anderson Cooper. Helena heads Fundacion Aldec, which is her labor of love of over 15 years. Her program feeds over 200 children in the colonial district of Quito, Ecuador and provides an after school tutoring and education program for the children. For many of these children the hot meal they are provided is the only one they will have all day. Besides serving lunch, she also serves breakfast to over 60 children who start the school day later. All the children receive something hot to drink and a fortified bread roll to eat before going home. The children pay for lunch, to help offse the costs of running the foundation, as much as $0.75, IF THEY CAN AFFORD IT. But the average child contributes around $0.10. This is done to help the children learn about the importance of being part of the solution and not just being there to get a free meal and goof around. All the children receive help with their homework and tutoring in their more difficult subjects. There are severl volunteer teachers who have been with the foundation for a long time and i will be posting another report ver soon wih interviews with the children.
Hello, Jon Jaramillo reporting from Quito, Ecuador where Fundacion Aldec is about to break ground on their new facility in more secure location where the children will not be exposed to the terrible conditions in the downtown colonial district of Quito where there are prostitutes on the street and alcoholics and thieves. The children need to be in this new location so they arent at risk of being lured into street gangs or exploitation by organized crime elements on the streets.
The director Helena Najas de Coronel and her long time supporters from the organization EVA Ecuadorian Volunteer Association in Chicago, Illinois Mr. Ivan and Mrs.Mariana Barriga who are the directors of this organization that helps over a dozen charity foundations in Ecuador. Other supporters present in the video are Mr. Matthias Tapernoux and his wife Lupita Tapernoux, who believe very strongly that Anderson Cooper should select Helena Najas de Coronel as Hero of the Year for her labor of love of the past 15 years. Mr. and Mrs. Tapernoux and their family are also long time financial supporters of the foundation. Also present was the architect Eduardo Andrade who explains some of the issues with the site where construction is going to occur. Finally, Helenas husband Ramiro Coronel who supports his wifes charity work 100%. And a special thanks goes out to the driver Roberto Morocho who transports the directors of the foundation safely every day, and who transported us safely to tour the location. We need your help. A classic Thanksgiving pigout may feel like it's basically required, but at an average of 3,000 calories a pop, it's also a diet bust.

Chaga is one of the weirdest mushrooms you may ever see. A fungal parasite found on birch trees, Chaga is a hardened, blackened, crusty formation that looks like a bursting tumor. While this strange-looking mushroom has been called a "tree cancer" since it will eventually kill its host tree, it has attracted interest for centuries in fighting human cancer and other diseases. This interest in its medicinal properties has led to rampant harvesting of wild specimens -- threatening this ecologically-delicate species. Growing the mycelium of the Chaga mushroom under laboratory conditions provides an ecologically friendly alternative supply of this unique medicinal mushroom.........

How could any teacher, parent or elected official not support a program that enhances the nutritional value of meals for students? Perhaps the folks in Kansas just don’t like someone who they perceive as at one time being “The Help”, Michelle Obama, telling their children what to eat.
Turns out that a student video fighting against the new nutritional standards for school lunches (that recently went viral) is not a homegrown teen protest after all but a propaganda tool of Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King...

China's health authorities are investigating allegations that genetically modified rice has been tested on Chinese children as part of a research project.
A recent scientific publication suggested that researchers, backed by the US Department of Agriculture, fed experimental genetically engineered golden rice to 24 children in China aged between six and eight years old.
The environmental group Greenpeace is demanding a stop to field trials of the genetically enriched rice, which has been proposed as a solution to vitamin A deficiency, as it says the rice carries environmental and health risks.
China is the world's largest grower of genetically modified (GMO) cotton and the top importer of GMO soybeans but, while Beijing has already approved home-grown strains of GMO rice, it remains cautious about introducing the technology on a commercial basis amid widespread public concern about food safety.
The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention investigation came after a report last month by environmental group Greenpeace claimed that a U.S. Department of Agriculture-backed study used 24 Chinese children aged between six and eight to test genetically modified 'golden rice'.

Secret...but it's good for you? The BT rice has the pesticides built into the seeds...it kills the bugs and small animals, but then you eat it! These eugenicists at Monsanto, who run the gov't want to kill us all!
You know how you solve a Vitamin A deficiency? Eat naturally grown food or healthy supplements with Vitamin A in it. But, the pharmaceutical companies and doctors on their payroll don't want you to have Vitamin A or B or C or D or E and the list goes on. Your body needs nutrition, not genetically modified processed franken-food and wheat products.China's health authorities are investigating allegations that genetically... more

When nine-year-old Martha Payne’s blog about her school lunch went viral, it got people all over the world talking about nutritional standards, and pupils all over the world sharing pictures and descriptions of their own daily fare... As an added bonus, it raised thousands for the charity “Mary’s Meals” which builds kitchens to feed kids in some of the world’s most impoverished regions.
But as word spread of Martha’s blog, her local council took note – and decided that, unlike Martha, they had quite enough on their plate. She was told to stop publishing photos of her meagre meals.
When she wrote her “Goodbye” – explaining “This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners...” the comments, already regularly in the healthy two-figure bracket, soared to more than 2000 – the clicks on her blog exceeded 4m ... and the donations to Mary’s Meals leapt to over £45,000 pounds.
Now, the local council has backed down and is eating humble pie.
Second helpings for Martha -- and for us!
