Weekly church activities boost obesity 50 percent by middle age, 18-year study shows
It might be the potlucks, it might be those long hours sitting in pews, but whatever the cause, a new study presented this week shows a link between religious activity and weight gain.
The study, conducted by researchers at Northwestern University, found that young adults who frequently attended religious activities were far more likely to become obese than those who didn’t.
“Our main finding was that people with a high frequency of religious participation in young adulthood were 50 percent more likely to become obese by middle age than those with no religious participation in young adulthood,” says Matthew Feinstein, the study’s lead investigator and a fourth-year medical student at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
“And that is true even after we adjusted for variables like age, race, gender, education, income, and baseline body mass index," he added.

Eating well is important at any age, but especially so for young children who need the right vitamins, minerals and nutrition to help them grow and develop. Lucky for parents, you don't need a medical or nursing degree in nutrition science to understand the basics of eating a balanced, healthy diet.

Back in the '70s, table sugar (a.k.a. sucrose) was the bad guy. People associated it (rightly) with tooth decay and diabetes, whereas fructose, the predominant sugar in fruit, seemed a more natural option.
Table sugar—a molecule composed of one part fructose to one part glucose—is no better, really, than food-grade HFCS, which contains the same ingredients in a roughly 55/45 ratio. The main distinction is that the fructose and glucose units are joined in sugar and detached in corn syrup. But since the small intestine promptly breaks that bond, it doesn't matter.
Now the pendulum has swung back: Corn syrup is the demon, while sugar (sometimes cleverly disguised as "evaporated cane juice") is back in vogue. But all this back-and-forth makes little sense since, nutritionally speaking, the two sweeteners are practically identical.
But like most things that are heavily marketed and little thought through, perception trumps reality. There are no studies saying that corn syrup is any less or more healthy than sugar.
"All of these are empty calories that offer you no nutrition," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, a dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. That doesn't mean they're forbidden, just that they should be eaten in moderation, she says.
All foods should be eaten in moderation, especially when feeding your children.
Variety and moderation trumps opinion. Eat a variety of healthy foods and the seemingly unhealthy ingredients contained within should balance themselves out.
It’s all a matter of opinion and caution. Take responsibility for yours and your Families health.

Those who ate more of foods such as spinach and fortified cereal had about a quarter lower risk of PMS, according to the study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The same was not true, however, for women who got their B vitamins from supplements.

Diageo, the world’s largest spirits, beer and wine company, is currently leading a campaign to get a 2003 proposition back into consideration. The proposal seeks to allow companies to smack a nutrition label on their alcohol products. The label could list items such as alcohol per serving, carbohydrates, and calories, serving size and even protein content on packaging and containers.
There is some confusion as to why alcoholic beverage companies are prohibited from displaying nutritional information on their products...

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote health and wellness Sodexo, the world leader in quality of daily life solutions, has launched the Meatless Monday initiative nationwide, by promoting and adding the option of a plant-based entrée to its menus each week. Sodexo expanded the initiative to its more than 900 hospital client accounts across the country in January 2011, following successful pilot implementations at a number of hospitals, schools and colleges. The program has also been made available to Sodexo’s corporate and government accounts.
By spring Sodexo corporate and government clients will have menus and materials in place to support the program. This fall the program will officially begin in Sodexo-served colleges and schools, already more than a dozen have implemented Meatless Mondays. The company’s senior living community clients will also pilot the program for residents and staff in 2011.
“Once people realize that vegetarian meals provide the protein that they need and are just as interesting, flavorful – and fun to prepare – people find them easy to integrate into their lives,” said Shawn Fields, executive chef, Cobblestone Café, Johns Hopkins Hospital. In addition to the many meals containing meat, Chef Fields has been providing the Meatless Monday options to his 1,800 customers a day since April, 2010.
The not-for-profit organization The Monday Campaigns (www.mondaycampaigns.org) developed the public health initiative in 2003 with the assistance of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. It is designed to promote healthy food choices that are also good for the planet.
A diet rich in whole grains, legumes, vegetables, nuts, and fruits along with a regular exercise program is consistently associated with lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, less obesity and consequently less heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and overall mortality according to scientific research reported in respected peer-reviewed publications including the American Journal of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
“Meatless Monday is based on the Healthy People 2010 report’s recommendation for Americans to reduce their saturated fat intake by 15 percent,” says Dr. Robert S. Lawrence, director, Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. “Almost all of our saturated fat comes from meat and high-fat dairy. Cutting meat out one day week can help Americans reach the reduction goal with little effort.”
“Sodexo is proud to combine our culinary expertise with the knowledge of our clinical dietitians to integrate meatless meal options that meet the nutritional needs of students learning in schools, patients recovering in hospitals, and employees engaging worksite wellness programs,” concludes Nitu Gupta, vice president of brand management for Sodexo health care. “Meatless Monday provides a healthy and tasty alternative for people looking to implement a healthy diet change, which explains why it has been so popular.”
Meatless Monday is another way that Sodexo emphasizes the importance of health and wellness in all of the communities that it serves. The program supports several of the 14 commitments in the company’s “Better Tomorrow” Plan, Sodexo’s roadmap to sustainability, including the commitments to promote varied and balanced food options and to develop and promote health and wellness solutions for our employees, clients and customers.
