The Guardian has continued its war on WikiLeaks with three new attacks over 48 hours—five days before Julian Assange’s final extradition appeal judgement in the High Court and a UK Parliamentary debate and vote on extradition abuses (both Monday, December 5). While it is often counter-productive to divert resources to dealing with PR attacks head-on, we provide here a revealing window into the behind-the-scenes realities that WikiLeaks has to deal with every day as a result of its high profile. While many attacks come from "traditional" enemies — the organizations WikiLeaks has exposed — others come from opportunists trying to work an easy socio-political sector — apparently saying what they believe these powerful enemies would like to be said, in the hope of preferment or relief in other areas. Others still, in fear of their reputations or the legal process, seek to whitewash past opportunism before natural moral or legal redress. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/43033-guardian-pr-war-against-wikileaks-qwikileaks-secrets-and-liesq-guardian-documentaryThe Guardian has continued its war on WikiLeaks with three new attacks over 48... more

Johnson City, Tennessee :: http://robertstromberg.com :: News report on the midnight madness shopping spree across the United States, aka Black Friday.
*The video is best viewed Full Screen.
Customers respond while on line, discussing economic woes and the state of our nation. The TVs are big. The lights are bright. Spirits are high!
5 stores and The Mall in 3 hours. Best Buy, HH Gregg, Old Navy, Target, Toys R Us, Belk's, JC Penney and The Mall. There was even a hold-up and robbery of $1,500 worth of stuff at the Jonesboro Walmart.
"I'm just here... I want to be an event that matters!" stated one gentleman waiting in line. Some shoppers camped for two nights, weathering rain and ice for the top spots at Best Buy. People saved between $200 and $800 dollars on televisions and appliances.
There was even some indication of a rivalry between the Best Buy and HH Gregg lines. It was dramatic. It was exciting. It was cold and disappointing. It was fun.

The original initiative to oust Mossadegh had come from the British, for the elderly Iranian leader had spearheaded the parliamentary movement to nationalize the British owned Anglo-lranian Oil Company (AIOC), the sole oil company operating in Iran. In March 1951, the bill for nationalization was passed, and at the end of April Mossadegh was elected prime minister by a large majority of Parliament. On 1 May, nationalization went into effect. The Iranian people, Mossadegh declared, "were opening a hidden treasure upon which lies a dragon". http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43032-iran-1953-us-military-and-cia-intervention-killing-hope-free-bookThe original initiative to oust Mossadegh had come from the British, for the elderly... more

An Italian radio program’s story about Iceland’s on-going revolution is a stunning example of how little our media tells us about the rest of the world. Americans may remember that at the start of the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland literally went bankrupt. The reasons were mentioned only in passing, and since then, this little-known member of the European Union fell back into oblivion. As one European country after another fails or risks failing, imperiling the Euro, with repercussions for the entire world, the last thing the powers that be want is for Iceland to become an example. Here’s why: http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43029-why-iceland-should-be-in-the-news-but-is-notAn Italian radio program’s story about Iceland’s on-going revolution is a... more

Maggie Daley, who dedicated herself to children’s issues and the arts, while also zealously guarding her family’s privacy during 22 years as Chicago’s First Lady, died tonight, more than nine years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 68.
Since disclosing her diagnosis in 2002, for the subsequent nine painstaking years she soothed us with her grace under pressure as a public person making innumerable appearances before crowds and cameras. The news of the death of Maggie Daley sparked memories from many who knew her and saw her handle the role of Chicago’s first lady with such warmth and grace.
“Tonight we grieve for the Daley family,” the current Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. “Chicago has lost a warm and gracious First Lady who contributed immeasurably to our city. While Mayor Daley served as the head of this city, Maggie was its heart.” Emanuel said her “most treasured role was as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Whether you knew her personally or were among the countless more who loved and admired her, all of Chicago will remember Maggie for the grace and dignity with which she served for twenty-two years as First Lady.”
This piece includes color photographs and a documentary short film tribute.

For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth.
Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.
In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.
Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind. For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it... more

“Freedom from Want” or “The Thanksgiving Picture” is one of Norman Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” paintings, inspired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union Address, known as “Four Freedoms.” “Freedom from Want” was published in the March 6, 1943, issue of “The Saturday Evening Post” and later was included as the cover image of the 1946 book “Norman Rockwell, Illustrator,” written when Rockwell was at the height of his fame as America’s most popular illustrator.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a Thanksgiving music video and a delightful documentary short film, “Casey Neistat and His Son Make Thanksgiving Dinner.”

What is happening in Syria feels like one of the last gasps of the age of the military dictators. An old way of running the world is still desperately trying to cling to power, but the underlying feeling in the west is that somehow Assad's archaic and cruel military rule will inevitably collapse and Syrians will move forward into a democratic age. That may, or may not, happen, but what is extraordinary is that we have been here before. Between 1947 and 1949 an odd group of idealists and hard realists in the American government set out to intervene in Syria. Their aim was to liberate the Syrian people from a corrupt autocratic elite - and allow true democracy to flourish. They did this because they were convinced that "the Syrian people are naturally democratic" and that all that was neccessary was to get rid of the elites - and a new world of "peace and progress" would inevitably emerge. What resulted was a disaster, and the consequences of that disaster then led, through a weird series of bloody twists and turns, to the rise to power of the Assad family and the widescale repression in Syria today. I thought I would tell that story. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43026-syria-bloody-travel-from-of-first-american-democratic-experiment-from-1947-2011What is happening in Syria feels like one of the last gasps of the age of the military... more

I made a 15 minute documentary about yesterday's civil disobedience at the Occupy Wall Street temporary encampment at Canal & 6th when a few protesters took over a privately owned lot. I got lucky and things unfolded right around me.
It follows the civil disobedience action from the initial announcement and excitement through the inevitable appearance by the NYPD. Along the way, it turns out the organizer of this action was not who he seemed to be and there is even a confrontation with an undercover NYPD officer.
I hope you get a chance to check it out. Please feel free to share it. It is registered as a part of the creative commons.

The work of M.C. Escher needs no introduction. We have all learned to appreciate the impossibilities that this master of illusion's artwork presents to the layman's eye. Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise for some, but many of the so-called 'impossible' drawings of M. C. Escher can be realized as actual physical objects. These objects will resemble the Escher's drawing, of the same name, from a certain viewing direction. This work below presents some of these three-dimensional models that were designed and built using geometric modeling and computer graphics tools.. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/43023-mc-escher-for-realThe work of M.C. “A Year in New York” is an enchanting, emotionally moving five-minute documentary short film by videographer Andrew Clancy, accompanied by Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow’s beautiful song “We Don’t Eat.” Sometimes words cannot do justice to life in a big city, as “A Year in New York” so entrancingly confirms. The film reveals that despite the chaos that surrounds urban life, there is a common thread of excitement and resilient optimism.
“A Year in New York” presents the viewer with a stream of quintessential New York visual imagery, from the No. 7 train rolling past Silvercup Studios' iconic film and television complex, to die-hard Rangers fans losing it at Madison Square Garden; from runners and rollerbladers cruising through city parks, to late-night, outdoor summer concerts; from blinking beacons on NYPD police cars, to the sparkling lights of the colossal Rockefeller Christmas Tree, resulting in a stunning homage to the city that never sleeps and to its lucky inhabitants.
This piece includes a number of wonderful high-resolution color photographs, a magnificent photo-gallery and the entrancing documentary short film.

“Thinking Aloud on Pleasure and Frustration” is a six-minute documentary short film featuring Adam Phillips, an English psychotherapist/psychoanalyst, literary critic and the author of several well-known books, including: “The Beast in the Nursery: On Curiosity and Other Appetites,” “On Kissing, Tickling and Being Bored,” “Going Sane,” “On Kindness” and most recently, “On Balance.” Phillips has written widely, from a unique psychoanalytic perspective, on a range of themes central to concepts such as the human condition, human suffering, desire, pleasure and the good life. As a practicing psychoanalyst, he offers a refreshingly subtle analysis of these concepts, grounded in the lives of actual persons. Phillips delivers his thoughts here with an unusually open and rich quality of fluid extemporaneous prose.
This piece includes photographs and the engrossing documentary short film.
