It’s a pretty safe bet what you’re going to get with a feature starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James as a pair of best friends and business partners. An intro will establish their undying bromance. Then there will be an incident or secret that will tear them asunder.
Finally, they will find their way back to one another, most likely conveyed via a joyous, slow motion, leaping chest bump or perhaps a 360 degree pan of an awesome bear hug. No need to post a spoiler alert, you’ve seen this progression countless times before.

In a whopping deal coming together quickly, Stephen King, Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road are in discussions to make a screen trilogy and TV series out of King's epic novel series The Dark Tower. Akiva Goldsman will write the script, Ron Howard will direct it, and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer will produce with Goldsman and King.
Universal is in talks to acquire a package that included the books, and the attachment of the team behind the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code. Both Universal –where Imagine is based—and Warner Bros—where Goldsman’s Weed Road banner is housed—have been vying for the project.

Everything was going great for “Parenthood,” the hour-long NBC dramedy based on the 1998 hit movie. It had a great pedigree. Writer/executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) came up with a great concept and script that was heartwarming and truthful without going over the line to too cute for words. And, perhaps most important, NBC loved the show and placed it on its fall line-up.
Then last summer, one of the its stars, Maura Tierney, underwent breast surgery and a couple of months later withdrew from the program. It was devastating on many levels.Everything was going great for “Parenthood,” the hour-long NBC dramedy... more

After releasing two films this year, Ron Howard is planning his next move, and this week he sounded most excited about directing a big-budget adaptation of "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft," based on the Image Comics series.
"It very cleverly uses H.P. Lovecraft in a fictional way, but there's some loose biographical elements. But it certainly has the flavor and the tone of Lovecraft," Howard told me during an interview for an upcoming story on a different topic. "The character is a very young Lovecraft."
I told the two-time Oscar winner that I had already seen the comics (conceived by Mac Carter with Adam Byrne as producer and cover artist) and liked them, and he got excited. "Oh you did! Oh, good, good. I haven't talked to that many people that have seen it so it's good to get that feedback."
"Look, it's challenging, but if we get it right, it could be really original and psychologically interesting and scary in a great way. And it's a graphic novel, this is new territory for me." (more @ link)

It's a family thing...
"Universal and Imagine have picked up "The Originals," a drama written by Bryce Dallas Howard and writing partner Dane Charbeneau that could serve as a directing vehicle for her father, Ron Howard.
Imagine is producing.
"Originals" is an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma.
The idea for "Originals" germinated a few years ago, when Howard, an actress with such films as "The Village" and "Spider-Man 3" under her belt, took to the idea of writing something that tackled the quarter-life crisis issues her contemporaries were dealing with. She roped in Charbeneau and the two have been working on the script for the past couple of years, as Howard shot "Terminator Salvation" and gave birth to her son Theodore.
"Originals" also became more of family affair during the writing process, as Charbeneau began dating Howard's sister Jocelyn. The two are now are engaged.
Howard, repped by ICM and Management 360, and Charbeneau eventually showed it to Ron Howard, who saw it as a potential antidote to the huge productions for which he is known.
"Originals" is still in development though the elder Howard, who is coming off Columbia's worldwide hit "Angels & Demons" and has not picked his next helming gig.
The director will return to his home at Universal for his next movie, with projects like "Colossus," a sci-fi thriller about a supercomputer, high on the priority list. "Originals" also is on that list. "It's a family thing...

ROME – Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with efforts to get permits to shoot certain scenes of his "Angels & Demons" religious thriller in Rome — a charge the Vatican said was purely a publicity stunt.
The film, which stars Tom Hanks and is based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, has its world premiere Monday in Rome.
"Angels & Demons" combines an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.
At a press conference Sunday, Howard said he hadn't sought cooperation from the Vatican based on the opposition he encountered filming "The Da Vinci Code," another Brown novel that angered many Catholic leaders.
But he said the Vatican nevertheless exerted influence regarding his filming permits, and he was told it would not be possible even to shoot scenes in Rome that had churches in the background.
"When you come to film in Rome, the official statement to you is that the Vatican has no influence," he said. "Everything progressed very smoothly, but unofficially a couple of days before we were to start filming in several of our locations, it was explained to us that through back channels and so forth that the Vatican had exerted some influence."
"Was I surprised? No. Am I a little frustrated at times? Sure," he said.
Nevertheless he said he felt that he was able to preserve the overall "Angels & Demons" experience despite the restrictions by recreating scenes on sets. For the Sistine Chapel alone, some 20 members of the production crew — posing as tourists — took photos of all the frescoes, floor mosaics and paintings of the tiny chapel where popes are elected — until they were told to stop, the film's Web site says.
Angels & Demons features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, played by Hanks in the movie. In the film, the Vatican turns to Langdon after the Illuminati kidnap four cardinals considered front-runners to be the next pope, and threaten to kill one an hour and then explode a bomb at the Vatican.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, refused to comment on Howard's allegations about church interference, saying his charges were purely designed to drum up publicity for the film.ROME – Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with... more

Fox News journalist Chris Wallace on Monday evening defended President Bush against criticism by Hollywood filmmaker Ron Howard that the president has abused his office in a way similar to President Richard Nixon.
"Richard Nixon's crimes were committed purely in the interest of his own political gain," Mr. Wallace told Mr. Howard before an audience of a few hundred after viewing the filmmakers new film "Frost/Nixon," which is about the only U.S. president to resign from office.
"I think to compare what Nixon did, and the abuses of power for pure political self preservation, to George W. Bush trying to protect this country — even if you disagree with rendition or waterboarding — it seems to me is both a gross misreading of history both then and now," Mr. Wallace said.
I can understand what Mr. Wallace is saying. There are big differences between Bush and Nixon. Nixon was a smart man, Bush is not. During speeches Nixon sweat big time. During speeches Bush f*cks up the English language big time. There is one thing Mr. Wallace that they do have in common and that is they both were two of the worst presidents ever.Fox News journalist Chris Wallace on Monday evening defended President Bush against... more
