The concept for the Evos chain was born during a road trip where founders Dino Lambridis, Alkis Crassas and Michael Jeffers grew tired of the usual fast food meals along their trip, or as Lambridis likes to refer to them, “two hours of regret sitting in your stomach.” The trio came up with the concept of a fast casual, counter service restaurant with food people wouldn’t regret eating. They launched Evos in 1994 and now hold the titles of “Greenest Burger Chain in America” by Greenopia and second most sustainable restaurant chain in the U.S.
I had the opportunity to speak with Dino Lambridis, the company’s Vice President and head of menu development, brand managing, and marketing, about what’s currently going on with this Tampa-based company. There are four Evos in the Bay area, with a fifth to open soon, and the sustainable chain has expanded with franchise stores in California, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Although there have been some recent changes, Evos’ core philosophy is still paramount. Each of their stores are built with sustainable materials, use Energy Star-certified equipment and CFL light bulbs, and offset a third of the energy powering their stores with wind-generated power. In addition to using to-go bags made from 100% recycled paper printed with soy-based ink, they now offer biodegradable cups and plastic bags.
Of course, the food is Evos’ biggest selling point with consumers, using fair trade teas, organic salad greens, organic dairy and naturally raised, hormone-free, source-verified beef for the burgers. (The chain has recently added hot dogs to the menu made from the same natural beef.) Vegans and vegetarians will even approve of some menu items, like chili where you don’t miss the meat, and soy or veggie burgers you can use to replace the meat in their sandwiches and wraps.
But don’t confuse Evos with “health food” — it simply serves up classic American fare, minus the added fat and preservatives, that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Lambridis informed me of new and improved Steakburgers and Airfries™, and his current campaign to reinvite the people of Tampa Bay to Evos so they can try for themselves the revamped items, as well as new menu items and revisions. It’s also an invitation to people who have never been to their restaurants — especially those who have overlooked them because of a misunderstanding that they only offer health food.
After speaking with Lambridis, I decided to put the new Freerange Steakburger and Airfries™ to the test. The natural beef patty was thick — easily 2-3 times the size of what you’d find at standard fast food chains — and sat on a soft whole wheat bun, accompanied simply by lettuce, tomato, ketchup and a dab of mayo. It was tasty and incredibly filling — I kept forgetting I was eating a “healthy” burger until I realized I didn’t have grease all over my hands.

100% of our coffee will be 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified by the end of 2011.
We are proud to announce that we are the first major coffeehouse retailer committing to 100 percent Rainforest Alliance certification for all of its coffees, a goal we plan to achieve by the end of 2011.
We recognize that a good cup of coffee goes beyond taste, it starts with farming practices that are environmentally and socially responsible. One-hundred percent certification is a very aggressive goal but one that we're proud to set. We're helping to ensure that our customers get premium coffee and our sourcing partners benefit environmentally, socially and economically.
About Rainforest Alliance
Rainforest Alliance certification, the most comprehensive sustainability certification developed to date, is managed by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN); a coalition of independent, nonprofit conservation groups. Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee farms ensure: the environment and wildlife are protected; workers receive decent wages and improved working and living conditions; workers and their families have access to education, medical care and clean water; coffee is harvested and processed responsibly. Farms that comply with certification criteria are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal of approval.

Tropical rainforests are a world like none other; and their importance to the global ecosystem and human existence is unequivocal. Unparalleled in terms of their untold biological diversity, tropical rainforests are a natural reservoir of genetic diversity which offers a rich source of medicinal plants, high yield foods, and a myriad of other useful forest products. They are the world’s richest and most productive ecosystems, containing half of all living species on the planet and a multitude of unique indigenous cultures.
Tropical rainforests play an elemental role in regulating global weather in addition to maintaining regular rainfall, while buffering against floods, droughts, and erosion. They store vast quantities of carbon, while producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen.
Despite their monumental role, tropical forests are restricted to the small land area between the latitudes 22.5° North and 22.5° South of the equator, or in other words, between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. Since the majority of Earth's land is located north of the tropics, rainforests are naturally limited to a relatively small area.
Tropical rainforests, like so many other natural places, are a scarce resource. The vast swathes of forest, swamp, desert, and savanna that carpeted Earth's land surface a mere five generations ago have been reduced to scattered fragments; today, more than two-thirds of the world's tropical rainforests exist as fragmented remnants.
Just a few thousand years ago, tropical rainforests covered as much as 12% of the land surface on earth, or about 15.5 million square km, but today less than 5.3% of Earth's land is covered with these forests (about 6.7 million square km).
The largest unbroken stretch of rainforest is found in the Amazon river basin of South America. Over half of this forest lies in Brazil, which holds about one-third of the world's remaining tropical rainforests. Another 20% of the world's remaining rainforest exists in Indonesia and Congo Basin, while the balance of the world's rainforests are scattered around the globe in tropical regions. (Adapted for educational purposes from mongabay)
The Disappearing Rainforests
We are losing 33,8 million acres of tropical forest per year, that’s 500,000 trees every hour, or an area the size of a football field every second!
The Amazon covers over a billion acres, encompassing areas in Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia and the Eastern Andean region of Ecuador and Peru. It is the most diverse ecosystem in the world, supporting around 60,000 plant species, 1000 bird species and more than 300 mammal species. The rainforest is also home to 20 million people.
Over the past 30 years 15% of the Brazilian Amazon has been completed destroyed - that's an area the size of France. In 2002 an area the size of Belgium was destroyed, the second highest figure on record.
There were an estimated ten million Indians living in the Amazonian Rainforest five centuries ago. Today there are less than 200,000. In Brazil alone, European colonists have destroyed more than 90 indigenous tribes since the 1900's.
Why do tropical forests disappear?
Logging is one of the principal causes of destruction in the Amazon. By building roads in pristine forest, the logging industry opens the door to further devastation such as clearing forest for cattle ranches and soya plantations. When the demand in the world for meat increases, more rainforest lands are being destroyed and turned into farmland for animals.
Tropical forests yield some of the most beautiful and valuable woods in the world, such as teak, mahogany, rosewood, balsa, sandalwood, and countless lesser-known species.
Most of the rainforest timber on the international market is exported to rich countries. There, it is sold for hundreds of the times of the price that is paid to the indigenous peoples whose forest has been plundered. The timber is used in the construction of doors, window frames, crates, coffins (we consume even in death!), furniture, plywood sheets, chopsticks, household utensils and other items.

"First Native American Television Network to be launched soon... World Indigenous Network gives back native voice.
CORTE MADERA CA / World Indigenous Network ( WIN-Tv ) is an idea that was born into the mind of Gérard Angé two and a half years ago. He has invested over a million dollars of his own money into an innovative concept that is sure to cause much-deserved hype among Native Americans as well as non-natives.
World Indigenous Network, or Win-TV, is the first national 24-hour satellite and cable based American Indian television network. It could be up and running in less than three months after funding. The network will feature all aspects of indigenous life, including but certainly not limited to news, music, dance, sports, politics, religion, food, and tribal issues. Mr. Ange’ believes that the network will “give all indigenous peoples back a voice that was ripped away from them”.
Win-TV will feature several shows that will provide information, entertainment, and education all from a native standpoint. Some shows planned for the network include Good Morning Native America, the Native American’s version of the popular Good Morning America; Native America Talking, a Larry King-ish talk show on Native issues, All Native Sportscene, Kids Korner, the first children’s program targeted at Native American youngsters, and Medicine Wheel, a show that targets the unique health needs of indigenous people. These are only a few of many programs that will benefit viewers in all aspects of living.
Win-Com, the company’s retail division will have five separated parts: shop-at-home, eCommerce, catalog sales, merchandising, and retail outlets. These five divisions will work cumulatively to stimulate business for native people and native businesses, as well as provide marketing platforms to demonstrate native arts, crafts, and talents in a larger, more mainstream market.
Win-Com will also provide a way for non-Native Americans to receive a sincere look into native life and culture without movies, or history books. Finally, Win-Com should positively boost the company’s reputation through sales of apparel and other products that will carry the company logo.
The primary goal of Win-TV is to give Native Americans back a voice that has been long lost, although much deserved. Mr. Ange hopes to provide an “exchange between nations” through the networking of native ideas and platforms among other cultures."

Dear President Obama, the people behind these crimes have not been prosecuted by the Judicial System. WHY?Dear President Obama,
The Facts below clearly show that homicide was committed to cover up criminal acts of an organized well funded covert criminal plot to commit voter fraud.
Joseph Stalin said:
“It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.”
So then why are the people behind these capital crimes and, criminal acts not been prosecuted? These people today are free to walk the streets continuing their ongoing illegal activities and acts of treason against the citizens of United States.
As voters, the citizens who voted for you voted you into office for a reason... "to correct the wrongdoings and criminal acts of the past administration." Not, to continue with the covert coverups and on going status-quo of the past eight years. We expect and, also demand more.
Today, we find ourselves at a critical turning point... Our Nation is only as great the integrity of it's laws, the fairness of our Judicial System and, as strong as the pillars of our Constitution...
As citizens, we need to realize, that our nation has reached that point where our Judicial System has been twisted, bought and subverted by large corporations to where it no longer protects the rights of "All People" as was intended by our founding fathers. We have reached the point... where our country is no longer... "Our Country" anymore.
As a nation, we can't let these crimes; as mentioned by Clint Curtis and others in the attached documentary continue to go on unpunished. For the sake of justice and our credibility and our Nation. YOU, Mr. Obama were elected by the Citizens of this land to give you the power as Commander and Chief and as President " To mandate change". To act... To provide leadership to save our Democracy and our Nation from the acts of corporate and judicial misconduct and criminal corruption. A mandate given to you... to give the country back to it's people, " all its people". A clear mandate to balance the scales of Justice. A clear mandate to see that laws be enforced and crimes be punished and not overlooked with a wink and a nod to the highest bidder... as it is today.
Before you, is an opportunity to do Great Things... An historic opportunity... that should not be waisted.

Homicide & Murder to cover up the Criminal Acts of Voter Fraud
The Clint Curtis Story is an incredible documentary which tells the story of a computer programmer who was contacted by a private company-Yang Enterprises- who have ties to accused chinese spies, to write a program that could be used to rig elections...what follows is the breaking of a massive conspiracy in which there would be hard evidence of vote manipulation via electronic voting machines-whether using Curtis's program or the twenty year old bootloader hack which, as show by students at Princeton University, could be loaded onto any of these machines in less than a minute; the sketchy firing of two employees-one being Curtis himself- from the Florida Dept of Transportation; corrupt ties to leading members of Diebold-one of two companies responsible for vote counting in the US; and a dead Florida DOT investigator- Raymond Lemme RIP- who was privately investigating the claims made by Curtis...who conveniently commited suicide in Georgia, where autopsies are not done on suicide victims, as opposed to Florida where an autopsy would have been automatic. What really happened in 2000 to Al Gore and Ohio & Florida, and again in 2004.....now you can finally know the truth, and it ain't pretty! 7 partsDear President Obama, The Facts below clearly show that homicide was committed to... more

The Partnership is Equal Exchange's first Jewish partnership and it’s twelfth overall. The AJWS "Better Beans" Fair Trade Project was formally launched at the United Jewish Communities General Assembly held in Washington, D.C. on November 8th-10th. In celebration of this new partnership, Equal Exchange also donated fairly traded coffee at the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial in Toronto, Canada, on November 7th. Equal Exchange and AJWS will work together to involve the Jewish community in Fair Trade with small-scale farmer communities around the world.
AJWS is an international development organization dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world, motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice. AJWS invites all Jewish brotherhoods, sisterhoods, youth groups, or religious schools to serve Equal Exchange fairly traded coffee and chocolate at Oneg Shabbats, brunches, events or to use them for fundraising. When synagogues or Jewish organizations order fairly traded products through the AJWS Project, a portion of every pound of coffee or chocolate purchased will go to support AJWS’s Fighting Hunger from the Ground Up campaign.
