An historian has claimed to have discovered the real identity of Jack the Ripper, and believes the notorious Whitechapel murderer was also responsible for killing two more women.
Mei Trow used modern police forensic techniques, including psychological and geographical profiling, to identify Robert Mann, a morgue attendant, as the killer.
His theory, the result of two years intensive research, is explored in a Discovery Channel documentary, Jack the Ripper: Killer Revealed.
Trow's research is rooted in information from a 1988 FBI examination of the Ripper case, which had worked up a comprehensive criminal personality profile.
The portrait drawn up of Jack was as a white male from the lower social classes, most likely the product of a broken home.
It was also thought he would have had a menial job but with some anatomical knowledge, something like a butcher, mortuary or medical examiner's assistant or hospital attendant.
Because of prolonged periods without human interaction, Jack would also have been socially inept.
It is known that Mann was from an extremely deprived background. His father was absent for much of his upbringing and he had spent some time as a child in a workhouse.
Trow said: "I wanted to go beyond the myth of a caped man with a top hat and knife, and get to the reality, and the reality is simply that Jack was an ordinary man."
Trow makes another startling conjecture, that the Ripper killed another two women.
He believes Martha Tabram, found with 39 stab wounds to her body in Gunthorpe Street, was the first of Jack's victims, and Alice Mackenzie, brutally murdered eight months after the confirmed five killings, was his last.
The two women, along with Polly Nichols and Annie Chapman, would have been delivered to the Whitechapel mortuary in which Robert Mann worked.
After the killing of Polly Nichols, Jack's first recognised victim, Mann unlocked the mortuary for the police so they could examine the body and as such, was called as a witness in her inquest to help establish the cause of death.
Most damningly, he undressed Polly's body with his assistant, despite being under strict instructions from Inspector Spratling to not touch the body, and Trow suspects that this was an opportunity to admire his handiwork.
Professor Laurence Alison, Forensic Psychologist at Liverpool University, who features in the documentary, said: "In terms of psychological profiling, Robert Mann is the one of the most credible suspects from recent years and the closest we may ever get to a plausible psychological explanation for these most infamous of Victorian murders."
JACK THE RIPPER: KILLER REVEALED will be aired on the Discovery Channel on Sunday October 11 at 9pm. The accompanying book, Jack the Ripper: Quest for a Killer, is published by Pen & Sword. An historian has claimed to have discovered the real identity of Jack the Ripper, and... more

This edition of Science is Speaking is dedicated to all nerds, geeks, fanboys and fangirls, lovers of sci-fi and cool tech! I have the awesome Nar Williams, who's blog Achieve Nerdvana is a go to source for savvy sci lovers and he's the host of the Discovery Science Channel's new show, Science of the Movies!
You’ve made a name for yourself as a source on Geekery- what inspired your love of nerdy things?
My love of anything comes from what I think is a.) Fun and b.) Interesting. Movies, robots, video games, technology, Dungeons & Dragons, TV, and science fiction are all fun and interesting to me. They’re also considered nerdy.
To me a geek is anyone who is really passionate (and educated) about something. It can be anything. Consider the following:
Wine Connoisseur = Wine Geek ...Baseball Fan = Baseball Geek...Fashionista = Fashion Geek...Gun Enthusiast = Geek with Guns
A lot more people are geeks than they realize!
On your blog, AchieveNerdvana.com, you discuss pop culture science tech and media. What type of technology do you most want to see developed in the future?
Transhumanist technologies like artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, robotics, and genetic engineering interest me the most.
It’s unfortunate that sci-fi flicks like The Matrix and Terminator shape so many people’s views of the future. I love those movies, but I don’t let them scare me. Ethical software is now being developed for artificially intelligent robots, so that we don’t have to live through the dystopian nightmare envisioned by James Cameron.
With careful ethical guidelines, technologies that enhance the human condition will help transform mankind and the planet. I mean, how cool is it that you can freeze some of your own stem cells for use later in life so doctors can repair damaged tissues or organs (or maybe even aging)?
On a selfish note, my one materialistic dream is to one day have a flying robotic dragon.
Your show on the Science Channel, Science of the Movies, goes behind the scenes to see how movie makers achieve those fancy Hollywood angles and effects. Tell us what it’s like to work with the artists and scientists responsible for movie magic!
The people I met while shooting Science of the Movies were pure genius. You hear people say "it's a collaborative medium" and I've always understood that on some level (in that I've been on sets and seen the legions that it takes to make a film). But this show has been eye opening for me because I've realized it goes way beyond being on set and earning their paycheck.
People like John Dykstra, John Frazier, Gary Theiltges (the list goes on and on) are literally inventing the tools that make the director/writer's imagination get on screen -- most without formal education in mechanical engineering, physics, or computer science… They're just brilliant.
Another fun aspect of the show is seeing how these inventors have borrowed technologies from so many different fields – medical, manufacturing, military – and made them work in the film industry.
Since you’re a movie nerd, I just have to ask: What’s your all time favorite movie and why?
This is just so hard it’s impossible. One? You really want one?? Here are a few of my favorites, in no particular order:
Harold and Maude, (Hal Ashby, 1971) – A comedy about death with the most inspiring ending of all time.
The Seventh Seal, (Ingmar Bergman, 1957) – A knight plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague! Who thinks of this? Bergman. I love all his work, but the supernatural elements and beautiful dialogue seal the deal for me on this one.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, (Peter Jackson, 2001, 2002, 2003) – You must watch these films together to really absorb the scope of this story and revel in the cinematic nerdvana of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. I haven’t watched them separately since 2003. Sure, it takes a day to watch them back to back, but are we men… or are we geeks? This edition of Science is Speaking is dedicated to all nerds, geeks, fanboys and... more

Whale Wars
Fridays at 9 PM e/p, starting November 7
Captain Paul Watson founded his Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977 because he believed his new organization had to go even further to eradicate whaling, poaching, shark finning and habitat destruction — and to uphold international conservation laws on the high seas — than the Greenpeace group he had co-founded.
For several years, Watson's group of staff and volunteers have engaged in a campaign almost every winter to find and stop Japanese ships that hunt whales in the name of research, attempting to stop them by any non-violent means necessary. The eclectic group — labeled activists, heroes and/or eco-pirates — leave port in Melbourne, Australia for a two-month campaign that is dangerous, controversial and has garnered international media attention. Sea Shepherd's dedicated, international crew have spent their holiday the last several years and risked their lives at the bottom of the Earth to save whales.
In the Spotlight
During the 2007-2008 campaign, Animal Planet captured the intensity of Sea Shepherd's mission and the trials and tribulations of the crew in a new seven-part, hour-long weekly series Whale Wars, premiering Friday, November 7 at 9 PM. The series draws attention to this global conservation issue that has caused friction between several nations over the practice of whaling in oceanic territories. This year's campaign was particularly eventful with multiple engagements, capsizing, possible hostage taking and alleged shooting, and Animal Planet crews were onboard to document it as it unfolded.
Highlighting both the controversial whaling trade and the tactics that Sea Shepherd and its staff and volunteers use to attempt to cripple it, the series documents the group's three-month sojourn across the icy Antarctic waters at the far end of the globe. Each week on Whale Wars, Animal Planet will take viewers on a powerful and adrenaline-fueled adventure and spotlight how the group takes action against alleged illegal whaling operations.
Aggressive Tactics
The Society's fight to eradicate Japanese whaling on the high seas — where international laws are interpreted by different countries and organizations in different ways — utilizes some aggressive techniques, including ramming and disabling whaling ships; disrupting whale carcass processing; engaging in physical entanglement; and boarding and dispersing fleets of whaling vessels. For the campaign this season, Sea Shepherd christened its vessel in honor of the iconic conservationist Steve Irwin with the blessing of his wife Terri, both of whom support the organization independent of Animal Planet.
"Whaling has no place in the 21st century," noted Watson. "Sea Shepherd will not stop until the killing ends." Whale Wars
