The US Government must get its priorities right. Too often “cybersecurity” is confused with “anti-piracy.” The average Joe or Jane downloading copyrighted content from Youtube is not a cybersecurity issue, whereas organized gangs systematically collecting and exploiting personal data is a cybersecurity issue. One might question if the US government is devoting the proper time and attention to the cybersecurity issues that are truly most in need of national attention. The US Government must get its priorities right. People get so upset, understandably, when an organization loses a laptop with SSNs, or has one stolen. But now, upon hearing that crooks don’t even need to steal SSNs, but can just generate them from commonly known information and use them until the victims discover the crimes, it is puzzling why so many people don’t see this as something to be concerned with, and to demand changes for.People get so upset, understandably, when an organization loses a laptop with SSNs, or... more

By Mike Spinney, CIPP, Privacy Analyst, Ponemon Institute - Here’s a brazen bit of breachery from the Miami Herald: It’s a neat little proposition: for a flat monthly fee, a data broker (of sorts) acquires medical records from a hospital employee and passes them through to a personal injury lawyer for a fee plus a percentage of his lawsuit earnings...By Mike Spinney, CIPP, Privacy Analyst, Ponemon Institute - Here’s a brazen bit... more

Thieves prey on our deepest and strongest emotions, and two people madly in love and about to take the plunge are certainly full of emotions and stress. Stress makes us more apt to decide quickly, without thinking the situation through. The sense of relief we feel may encourage us to accept an offer that seems “too good to be true” when we might otherwise hesitate.Thieves prey on our deepest and strongest emotions, and two people madly in love and... more

Analyzing an incident when the manufacturer claims that it’s an operator error and the operator claims that it is an application error is one of the most daunting tasks of a security officer. And this is a type of incident that the security officer will be called upon to investigate simply because the management needs an independent observer and has doubts both in the operator as well as the manufacturer. Here is what to do when thrown into the fire…Analyzing an incident when the manufacturer claims that it’s an operator error... more

Halloween's origins date back more than 2,000 years. On what we consider November 1, Europe's Celtic peoples celebrated their New Year's Day, called Samhain (SAH-win).
The night before Samhain—what we know as Halloween—spirits were thought to walk the Earth as they traveled to the afterlife. Fairies, demons, and other creatures were also said to be abroad.
European immigrants brought Halloween to the United States, and the celebration really gathered steam in the 1800s, when Irish-American immigration exploded.
Anoka, Minnesota, may be home to The United States' oldest official Halloween celebration. Beginning in 1920, the city began staging a parade and bonfire.
Anoka historians say townsfolk wanted to curb Halloween pranks that loosed cows on Main Street and upended outhouses.
In all, U.S. Halloween spending is predicted to reach $5.77 billion, despite the current financial crisis, the U.S. National Retail Federation says.

Rising wheat prices are pushing up costs for baked goods, and foods from muffins to pizza
Pizzeria owner Joe Vicari shakes his head as he prepares to rip open a 50-pound bag of flour for another batch of dough. "That's 37-bucks. $37. I couldn't believe it!" says Vicari.
Since opening Mariella Pizza in mid-town Manhattan 30-years ago, Vicari, says he has never experienced such a jump in the cost of his ingredients.
"I can't even believe how much the flour [goes] up. When I see the bill I can't believe it, that's too much," says the veteran pizza maker, who emigrated from Sicily. Only four weeks ago, Vicari says, he was paying just $16-a-bag for Gold Medal brand flour, which at $37-a-bag now seems more golden than ever.Rising wheat prices are pushing up costs for baked goods, and foods from muffins to... more
