“The Piano” is a widely acclaimed 3-D animated short film by Aidan Gibbons, a touching retrospective of an older man’s experiences, loves and losses in life. His reminiscences derive from the evocative imagery created by his piano playing, the music of Yann Tiersen’s evocative and reflective “Comptine d’un autre été: l’après midi.”
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the masterful animated short film.

“She Farted and Created the World” is a curiously humorous two-minute animated short film by animator/creator Scott Coello, which was shortlisted for the 2009 Virgin Media Shorts Awards. A big puppy farts, and lo, a whole new universe is born, setting into motion an unprecedented cycle of evolution! Yes, it turns out to be the Red Queen Model of co-evolutionary interaction, which holds that the struggle for existence never eases up, so that no species ever pulls ahead for long. The music is provided by a band named Son of Robot.
This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as the wickedly funny animated short film.

“Exposed” is a photographic collection presently on exhibition at London’s Tate Modern Gallery, which offers a fascinating look at pictures made on the sly, without the explicit permission of the people depicted. With photographs from the late nineteenth century to present day, the pictures present a shocking, illuminating and sometimes witty perspective on iconic and taboo subjects. “Exposed” presents 250 works by celebrated artists and photographers, including Weegee, Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Philip Lorca DiCorcia, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Harry Callahan, Lee Miller, Helmut Newton and Man Ray.
The United Kingdom is now the most surveyed country in the world, fostering an obsession with voyeurism, privacy laws, freedom of media, and surveillance, images captured and relayed on camera phones, YouTube or reality TV. Much of “Exposed” focuses on surveillance, and the issues raised are particularly relevant in the current climate, with debates raging around the rights and desires of individuals, terrorism and the increasing availability and use of surveillance. “Exposed” confronts these issues and their implications head-on.
This piece include a number of high-resolution photographs from the exhibition, a slide show and two documentary short films.

“I Was Drunk” is a hilarious new smash music video by Riva Starr, starring talking babies with mustaches. The video’s track is real dope (or dopey), although it’s not clear what I should call it...gypsy house maybe? Anyway, to add a lighter note to your day, please take a listen and watch these mustachioed babies do their fantastic talking routines!

“Dot” is a new 90-second animated short film directed by Sumo Science (a.k.a. Will Studd and Ed Patterson) at Aardman Animations. Aardman (the creators of Wallace & Gromit) has done many amazing things in animation and earned dozens of awards, but none is likely to be quite as unusual as its new film “Dot” earning a spot in Guinness Book of Records for the smallest stop-motion animation character in a film. All the minuscule detail was shot using the new Nokia N8 smartphone, along with the CellScope technology.
The film features little Dot, a tiny 9mm girl who wakes up in a magical, magnified world and discovers that her surroundings are caving in all around her. She escapes the encroaching wave of destruction as her world unravels via a path made up of tiny, familiar objects, such as pins, pencil shavings, nuts and bolts, coins and a bumblebee, until she finally finds peace by knitting herself a blanket from the very stuff that pursues her.
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the amazing animated short film, “Dot.”

“Monument” is a very touching three-minute short film created by the English filmmaker, Robin Schmidt. The film was made as part of the competition in support of the Fireflies Charity, which recognizes relatives and friends’ battles with cancer. This year they asked for entries for a film challenge to create a three minute film about courage. “Monument” is kind of an urban fairytale about an aged Rastafarian in a wheelchair, who relives a knife attack and decides to rid the community of its knife problem once and for all by magnetizing his body.
The film was a finalist in the Fireflies competition earlier this year, and won the Bahamas 14 Islands Film Challenge. Schmidt is currently editing a full-length version, which will be going on the festival circuit very soon.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the remarkable short film.

“Tell-Tale” is a powerful, intriguing film-noir thriller by the acclaimed English photographer Greg Williams. Carrying on the cinematic tradition of Femme Fatale films, Williams’ dramatic directorial debut takes the preconceptions of this character type and uses them to create a visually striking short with an ever-twisting narrative. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Telltale Heart,” the short film is a story of devotion and guilt that is carried out with smoldering visual flair and flamboyant confidence.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the wickedly perverse noir-esque short, “Tell-Tale.”

Fickmaschinen (F**k Machine) is a darkly wicked two-minute experimental short film by the London-based filmmaker Matt Lambert. In the post-digital age, do our sexual identities become purely combinations of the countless sexual images we have absorbed? Have humans become objects and actions become automatic recreations of past experiences, recreations of past observations? When the lights go out, do we turn into something scratched, twisted, and carnal, the ghostly forms and grind of pistoning flesh?
This piece includes photographs, as well as the twisted, carnal short film.

Britain is in the middle of a new media storm over the safety of beef — but this time it is not about mad cows, but cloned ones.
Earlier this week a Scottish farmer admitted that he had raised cows derived from an American clone. Meat from at least one of the animals was sold to wholesalers and probably ended up in stores.
British government experts say there's no danger. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration says it is legal and safe for meat from the offspring of cloned animals to enter the supply chain, though in reality a relatively small amount has made it to store shelves.

* Sterling hits 6-month high of $1.5968 GBP=D4
* Next target $1.5970, strong resistance seen ahead of $1.60
* Dollar hurt broadly by lower U.S. growth, rates outlook
LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Sterling hit a six-month high against a broadly weaker dollar on Tuesday, lifted by expectations the UK will continue to recover after recent upbeat economic data and robust bank earnings.
The pound also benefited from across-the-board weakening of the U.S. dollar on concerns about a slowing U.S. economy and speculation of further monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve. [FRX/]
The pound rose to as high as $1.5968, its highest since early February, stopping just short of $1.5970, the 61.8 percent retracement of its move down from a high in August 2009 of $1.7044 to May's low of $1.4225.
Analysts and traders, however, believe sterling will face stiff resistance on the approach to $1.60, both because it is a key psychological level and due to reported options barriers around there.
"Sterling has had a really good run recently, but it needs fresh impetus to make a sustainable break above $1.60," said Audrey Childe-Freeman, currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman.
By 1527 GMT, the pound was 0.3 percent higher on the day at $1.5939 GBP=D4.* Sterling hits 6-month high of $1.5968 GBP=D4
