Hulu's expected launch date of September has been pushed back to sometime next year, after the company failed to close deals with ITV, Channel 4 or BBC Worldwide in order to provide exclusive UK content for the website.
Hulu, a free advertising-supported streaming video service, has also not yet rolled out its product to the major media agencies. Alex Randall, group trading director for Isobar, the digital arm of the Aegis group said, "To my knowledge Hulu has no presence in the marketplace or a dedicated UK sales team in place.”
The website would have launched with about 3,000 hours of content from American networks... guess we'll all have to make do with BBC iPlayer and 4oD, for now.Hulu's expected launch date of September has been pushed back to sometime next... more
If you get half a dozen emails from China filling up your Gmail account each and every day, I have good news for you...
Google can now translate these without you needing to copy and paste the funny little letters into a different window!
Dubbed 'Message Translation', the service isn't available by default - you have to switch it on. But really, how difficult is that? It's not like you're having to pay attention in French class for five years, now is it?
As for the quality of translation... well, it's still going to be better than what you picked up doing that GCSE (and, if like me, failing it!)If you get half a dozen emails from China filling up your Gmail account each and every... more
Forget your iPlayer and the chance to catch up with Dot from EastEnders, Hulu is where the good stuff is!
For the uninitiated, Hulu - backed by News Corp, NBC and Disney - is similar to iPlayer but has more than the last 7 days programming and more than just one broadcaster's content.
It would appear that the service, currently blocked to anyone outside the US, will launch by September and that ITV and Channel 4 are on board.
There have been rumours about this for the past week but this Telegraph article from yesterday adds a little more credence.Forget your iPlayer and the chance to catch up with Dot from EastEnders, Hulu is where... more
According to reports, this weekend will be the first that Virgin Media will be extending its internet traffic restrictions in Preston, Wigan and Blackpool, all three of which already have weekday restrictions.
Virgin have defined the 'peak time' (when restrictions will apply) as between 11am and 9pm downstream and 10am to 8pm upstream. As soon as users reach their 'threshold' their download speed will be capped 'for up to 10 hours.'
Below is a breakdown of the bandwidth barriers:
"The thresholds vary according to tier of service: on the 2Mbps tier, a customer will have a 50% speed reduction after downloading 1.25GB; on the 10Mbps tier, a 75% reduction after 3GB; and on the 20Mbps tier, a 75% reduction after 7.5GB. Upload limits are much lower, at 400MB, 1.4GB and 2.8GB respectively."
Think this will make people stop downloading as much, or just lose Virgin Media some customers?Uh oh! Branson's putting the squeeze on!

" She was the first British monarch to send an email. She has her own website. And today the Queen uploaded video to YouTube during a visit to Google's British headquarters.
The company celebrated the queen's visit by creating a special version of its google.co.uk home page, which featured a silhouette of her head as the second "G" and a regal crown atop the "E" in their logo.
During the visit, the queen and her husband, Prince Philip, saw a demonstration of the company's technology and met schoolchildren who won a competition to design their own Google "doodles" - what the Mountain View, California-based company calls special editions of their blue, green, red and yellow logo...."

I hear this all the time, "I want to webcam comments, but I don't have a webcam."
Truth is, a webcam is just a dedicated camera for uploading short videos. Any camera will serve the same purpose -- even your digital still camera can do the trick if it has a video mode.
Sure, it's one extra step. You have to record your video, then copy it to your desktop, and then upload it. Webcams roll all of that into one step, but it can still be done. As Duncan points out in his post, even many pro live streamers use a pro camera or an old digital camcorder to do this sort of thing.
But that's just the basics. He also covers everything from streaming to distribution, while tossing in some interesting software suggestions.
Our Current:News team is looking for webcam...scratch that, video responses to feature in Current:News pods. So fire up your webcam/digital camcorder/still cam and upload your responses is video form. You just might find yourself in an upcoming Current:News TV broadcast.
