Each year, French film director Luc Besson organizes an open air film festival in several Parisian suburbs, places which are generally considered no-go areas, where cars are set on fire and ambulances get attacked... Last year Luc Besson convinced directors at the Cannes Festival to send him a copy of their brand new movies to screen them in the suburbs. Tarantino, Brad Pitt and others agreed. The people from the suburbs were incredibly happy to have those movies screened for free on the same day as the premiere in Cannes.
Journalists covering this festival were not allowed to collect pictures of burning cars, but had to ask people about the newest cinema releases... the event was a surprisingly strong political stament comming from a commercial movie producer as well as a huge success with over 60.000 spectators.
This year, the festival is held again in a slightly modified version and it's supposed to be even bigger...VC2 producer Philip Mayrhoffer will talk to Luc Besson and spectators to cover the event. Each year, French film director Luc Besson organizes an open air film festival in... more

In scenes reminiscent of the 11 days of rioting in 2005, French youths in the suburbs are kicking up a fuss. This is an interesting one because the last time there were major riots, Sarkozy was the one responsible for ending them, and he is widely despised among young folks in the suburbs. From China, he told everybody to chill out. In scenes reminiscent of the 11 days of rioting in 2005, French youths in the suburbs... more

Teargas and rubber bullets are being aimed at rioters armed with molotov cocktails and firecrackers in the second day of clashes between Parisian youths and police. The uprising began after two youths were killed when their motorcycle collided with a police car. President Sarkozy is urging calm, but police continue to brace themselves for more street battles.
"The accident resembled the event that triggered suburban riots in France in 2005, sparking fears of more violence to come. Two years ago the death of two boys allegedly fleeing the police in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois sparked weeks of violence in France's rundown estates."
Do you think this could turn into another major riot like the one we saw in 2005? Teargas and rubber bullets are being aimed at rioters armed with molotov cocktails and... more
