This is who is replacing John Galliano? Yikes. I hope there are no newspapers at his rehab.
Hot off the press! Riccardo Tisci is replacing John Galliano at the House of Dior. Really? But Carine Roitfeld will be the resident stylist. Double really? As you know, I am all about Haider Ackermann, and my suggestion was for him to replace Galliano. But the world surely does not revolve around me and what I think. Anyhoo, I’d like to think that Haider has an unofficial deal in place with Karl Lagerfeld to follow him at Chanel, so why go to Dior? Especially with all the fashion bitches, claws out, ready to trash next season’s collection, no matter what. Actually, Ackermann is replacing Tisci at Givenchy. After looking at Riccardo Tisci’s collection for Givenchy this season, Haider Ackermann is the smarter move because he will salvage Givenchy from extinction. Who besides Cate Blanchett (worst dressed at Oscars as per Joan Rivers) and Ciara has been wearing Givenchy anyway? It’s all too dishy but I do hope this all works. My suggestion for Haider is to modernize the Audrey Hepburn look, which will be a hugely fierce way to go. LBD anyone?

Alex Guofeng Cao pays homage to pop culture's most famous icons in a very unique way. At first glance, Cao's series Decompose/Compose: Resurrect appears to simply be portraits of celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol and Brigitte Bardot. Upon closer inspection, one can see that Cao's pieces are composed of small repetitive images. The arrays of miniscule visages used by Cao to form the larger portraits, are themselves iconic images. Cao's images are imposing and arresting to say the least.

"Janette Ewen’s Top Five New Films That May Become Fashion and/or Decor Influences:
1. Amelia
2. Where the Wild Things Are (more for interiors)
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox (men's fashions!)
4. Nine
5. Beyond Biba
Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s gown, the exquisitely-tailored Hitchcock women, Diane Keaton’s menswear-inspired outfits in Annie Hall – film and fashion have always enjoyed a close relationship.
Film buff and stylist Janette Ewen is always looking at movies for fashion and décor inspiration. On the day CityLine.ca spoke with her she was decked out in a chic black Coco Chanel-inspired outfit accessorized with beads and an oversized flower, possibly taking cues from one of the two Chanel biopics out this year (Coco Avant Chanel, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky).
“I think movies have always influenced fashion,” Ewen explains. “You think of things like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Rear Window. There was a great stylist in the ‘40s to the ‘60s, Edith Head. She styled a lot of those movies, and they’ve become iconic.”
Head, who won eight Academy Awards over her illustrious career, designed looks for Audrey Hepburn (Roman Holiday), Tippi Hedren (The Birds, Marnie), Katharine Hepburn (Rooster Cogburn), Grace Kelly (Rear Window, To Catch a Thief), and Elizabeth Taylor (A Place in the Sun), among many others.
Hepburn’s signature look -- all cinephiles know the introduction to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, where character Holly Golightly lingers outside Tiffany’s in a full-length black ballgown, sunglasses, and long gloves -- was a collaboration between stylist Head and designer Hubert de Givenchy.
“The two of them sort of came together (on the look), there’s always sort of that argument about who came up with it but I think it was the (two of them) coming together to create those beautiful looks,” Ewen explains.
As far as recent films go, the 2006 Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette was a big style-driver, for the shoes alone. Not surprisingly it won an Oscar for Best Costume Design, with pastel-hued dresses that looked good enough to eat.
“A lot of the key stylists putting these costumes together, we’re now seeing the trickle-down into outfits we wear, influencing the fashion designers that are creating collections,” Ewen says. “A lot of times they’ll reference a classic movie or even a new movie that’s coming out."
The TV movie Grey Gardens, starring Drew Barrymore as ‘Little’ Edith Bouvier Beale and based on the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis (also profiled in a lauded 1975 documentary), was another recent film that had an impact on major design houses.
“A lot of the designers, I think four or five collections -- Marc Jacobs did one inspired by it -- brought that look in and were inspired by the new, modern version of the movie,” Ewen notes.
In recent years, fashion has increasingly become the subject matter in film. The two Coco Chanel biopics are one example. Last year also saw the release of acclaimed documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor, written and directed by Vanity Fair correspondent Matt Tyrnauer. (See my interview with Tyrnauer here.) And then there's The September Issue, a 2009 documentary chronicling the creation of the September 2007 issue of Vogue. The magazine weighed close to five pounds and is the single largest issue of a magazine ever published.
For those looking to channel a look they see on film, be it classic or modern, Ewen recommends taking notes while watching.
“What are the key essentials of those outfits you’re drawn to? Put it together on a list, and then take that list with you when you’re going shopping,” she advises. “And then when you’re in the stores, fiddle with stuff, layer things on. Stylists will often put a bunch on and slowly pull things away until they whittle down (to) that perfect outfit.”""Janette Ewen’s Top Five New Films That May Become Fashion and/or Decor... more

Every Monday is the “Wish List,” a blog entry dedicated to one online shopping site where a dream outfit is compiled editorial style from the site. This week pieces pieces include a $2000 clutch (wow!) and $800 shoes! Intrigued? Check it out.
The blogger is a magazine editor so the page is like her dream editorial spread as if she had complete creative rights without any Editor cutting her off!
