OK, I know I’m going to take some heat from this, but I actually believe that the soccer fields would be better replaced by the artificial turf than keeping the grassy gopher community that’s there now. To me it is a sound safe move that will only affect a very small amount of Golden Gate Park.OK, I know I’m going to take some heat from this, but I actually believe that... more

These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window in Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few weeks later I was on a plane to Lagos. Abiola met me at the airport and together we took a bus to Benin City where the ‘hyena men’ had agreed to meet us. However, when we got there they had already departed for Abuja. In Abuja we found them living on the periphery of the city in a shantytown - a group of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock pythons. It turned out that they were a group of itinerant minstrels, performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines. The animal handlers were all related to each other and were practising a tradition passed down from generation to generation. I spent eight days travelling with them. --- photo essay http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/43062-nigerian-hyena-handlers-gadawan-kuraThese photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone... more

In this gripping on the sofa discussion, volunteers raise questions on the press and free speech in light of the Leveson Inquiry. The online journal Spiked has launched a campaign against the Leveson Inquiry and spiked journalist Patrick Hayes challenges participants not to go along with the Inquiry’s dangerous underlying assumptions. Support for the Leveson inquiry with its bewigged judges, celebrities and government seeking to control the press, shows nothing but elitist snobbery and contempt for the public. Free speech and a free press with no ‘buts’ are essential for democracy he argues and while not everyone on the sofa agrees, WORLDwrite and WORLDbytes does.In this gripping on the sofa discussion, volunteers raise questions on the press and... more

Until recently, leaking confidential information was perceived as disloyal and irresponsible and not only was it rare but involved a moral dilemma. Yet now, it is secrecy, confidentiality and privacy that are stigmatised and Wikileaks is lauded for enabling individuals to spill the beans. Is this development a triumph for transparency or a blow to moral integrity? This debate is superb and speakers include Mick Hume, editor-at-large, spiked; writer, The Times; Joyce McMillan, theatre critic, Scotsman, Henry Porter, political columnist, Observer; UK editor, Vanity Fair; Gwyn Prins, research professor, LSE; Richard Sexton, partner, PwC.Until recently, leaking confidential information was perceived as disloyal and... more

The history of forcing fluoride on humans through the fluoridation of drinking water is wrought with lies, greed and deception. Governments that add fluoride to drinking water supplies insist that it is safe, beneficial and necessary, however, scientific evidence shows that fluoride is not safe to ingest and areas that fluoridate their drinking water supplies have higher rates of cavities, cancer, dental fluorosis, osteoporosis and other health problems. Because of the push from the aluminum industry, pharmaceutical companies and weapons manufacturers, fluoride continues to be added to water supplies all over North America and due to recent legal actions against water companies that fluoridate drinking water supplies, precedent has been set that will make it impossible for suits to be filed against water suppliers that fluoridate. There is a growing resistance against adding toxic fluoride to our water supplies, but unfortunately, because fluoride has become "the lifeblood of the modern industrial economy"(Bryson 2004), there is too much money at stake for those who endorse water fluoridation . The lies of the benefits of water fluoridation will continue to be fed to the public, not to encourage health benefits to a large number of people, but to profit the military-industrial complex. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/43055-the-fluoride-conspiracy-the-greatest-case-of-scientific-fraud-of-this-centuryThe history of forcing fluoride on humans through the fluoridation of drinking water... more

UFC President Dana White, also a co-owner in the company, took to Twitter blasting Anonymous and promoting SOPA. On Jan. 22 he wrote, "@masontbell9 nice fake account. Hacking the site is not a big deal dummy. We are not in the website biz. Today was a great day!!! Pats!!!!" --------- The on Jan. 22 he taunted, "@fjbar75 the Internet is the coward capital of the world" -------------- But yesterday the exchange grew more heated after Dana White threw his support in for SOPA in a UFC on FOX 2 post-press conference interview. He commented, "Is SOPA the perfect bill? No, it's not. The only thing that we're focused on is piracy. Piracy is stealing. If you walk into a store and steal a f------ gold watch, it's the same as stealing a pay-per-view. I don't care what your twisted, demented idea of stealing is. These kids grew up on the Internet never had to pay for anything, so they don't think they should have to." http://www.freeturbine.com/index.php/news/artists-news/item/ufc-president-calls-out-anonymous-plugs-sopa-gets-ktfoUFC President Dana White, also a co-owner in the company, took to Twitter blasting... more

Congress is debating dangerous legislation that would give the Department of Justice unprecedented power to “blacklist” websites without a trial and give Hollywood copyright holders a new way to shut down a website’s financial services for alleged copyright infringement. It’s nothing short of a bill to create a U.S. censorship regime, and it’s moving fast. We need your help to stop this legislation before it can undermine Internet security and censor the web. Ready to join EFF, Demand Progress, Fight for the Future, Free Software Foundation, Creative Commons, CDT, the Participatory Politics Foundation, and Public Knowledge in the fight? Here are 12 things you can do right now to help us stop the blacklist bills. http://www.freeturbine.com/index.php/news/general-music-news/item/fight-the-blacklist-a-toolkit-for-anti-sopa-activismCongress is debating dangerous legislation that would give the Department of Justice... more

On September 17, 2011, Occupy Wall Street (OWS), a diffuse group of mostly white middle class young people began a loosely organized protest in New York’s financial district. The group planned to camp out for some extended period in Zuccotti Park, a privately owned park in Lower Manhattan open to the public. This protest against corporate greed and social inequality and other disparities between rich and poor in the United States and around the world was fueled by their own anger and frustration at living in a country in the throes of a capitalist economic crisis where their own personal futures looked grim while the government was propping up and bailing out the super rich, the very people responsible for the crisis! http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43044-occupy-wall-street-why-this-rebellion-deserves-our-support-On September 17, 2011, Occupy Wall Street (OWS), a diffuse group of mostly white... more

Stop the Internet Blacklist Legitimization The Internet Blacklist Legislation - known as PROTECT IP Act in the Senate and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House - is a threatening sequel to last year's COICA Internet Censorship Bill. Like its predecessor, this legislation invites Internet security risks, threatens online speech, and hampers Internet innovation. A retired bishop was among more than 50 people arrested after the Occupy Wall Street movement stormed another New York City park in an attempt to find a new home. Former Episcopal bishop George E. Packard was led away in cuffs after climbing a ladder to illegally enter Juan Pablo Duarte Square in the west SoHo neighbourhood of the city during the demo. He was one of hundreds of demonstrators, members of the clergy and elected officials who descended on the park and scaled a chain-link fence by a lot they’re eyeing as a new campsite. http://www.freeturbine.com/index.php/news/recent-politic/item/bishop-arrested-during-occupy-new-york-protestA retired bishop was among more than 50 people arrested after the Occupy Wall Street... more

The mass media serve as a system for communicating messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfill this role requires systematic propaganda. In countries where the levers of power are in the hands of a state bureaucracy, the monopolistic control over the media, often supplemented by official censorship, makes it clear that the media serve the ends of a dominant elite. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/section-blog/43042-manufacturing-consent-a-propaganda-model-book-excerptThe mass media serve as a system for communicating messages and symbols to the general... more

I won't use many words or statistics. Both have been used before and they don't even begin to describe was is really happening. When we go to America we have an image. An image embedded or 'incepted' by decades of Hollywood films and the media. It's part of 'The American Dream' pumped out by a factory of dreams. We don't see the real people any more. We see characters being played by actors. But this time I went out in search of the real people. And I did see them. Like I have never seen them before. I began to think, is America haunted by what it has become and the way it got here? Or is it all about fiction, sitcoms and canned laughter? America is haunted all right. The ghosts are here. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/43027-la-venice-beach-how-the-american-dream-become-a-nightmareI won't use many words or statistics. Slavoj Zizek .......... 1989 marked not only the defeat of the Communist State-Socialism, but also the defeat of the Western Social Democracy. Nowhere is the misery of today's Left more palpable than in its "principled" defence of the Social-Democratic Welfare State: the idea is that, in the absence of a feasible radical Leftist project, all that the Left can do is to bombard the state with demands for the expansion of the Welfare State, knowing well that the State will not be able to deliver. This necessary disappointment serves as a reminder of the basic impotence of the social-democratic Left and thus push the people towards a new radical revolutionary Left. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43024-only-communism-can-save-liberal-democracySlavoj Zizek .......... 1989 marked not only the defeat of the Communist... more

The whole Voina lifestyle and narrative are something of a performance; it is about public self-representation, certainly. This is part of what makes them artists, say their supporters. But naturally the police are not to be distracted by such arguments, and when the group overturned the seven police cars, it was decided that it was clearly time for the security forces to play their part. In November 2010, Vorotnikov and Nikolaev were duly arrested in a raid by the Extremism Police – a special police unit active on most towns in Russia – on the flat where they were staying in Moscow. Handcuffed and laid on the floor of a minibus for the ten-hour drive to St Petersburg, Vorotnikov and Nikolaev were then charged with “aggravated hooliganism” and “incitement of hatred of a social group” (the police) and held in a pre-trial detention prison. The pair were freed on bail after three months, following a campaign both in Russia and elsewhere – Banksy raised some £80,000 (US$127,738) to pay for lawyers, bail and to support the group’s further activity. Days later, the Innovation award nominations were announced. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/section-blog/43022-russian-anarchist-guerrilla-artists-from-the-voina-art-collective-The whole Voina lifestyle and narrative are something of a performance; it is about... more

Because of the deliberately dishonest and even vile portrayals of the leader in the controlled media, not much is known regarding Qaddafi's political thoughts and his guiding ideology. He is described in the media as a dictator, yet in 'The Green Book', Qaddafi outlines the actual governing foundation that undergirds the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. That foundation is The Third Universal Theory 'which upon critical analysis' puts many so-called Western Democracies and Republics to shame......... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43007-how-libyan-democracy-puts-western-democracy-to-shameBecause of the deliberately dishonest and even vile portrayals of the leader in the... more

Good News, Everyone! Yesterday, there were local elections in the German country of Niedersachsen, and 59 (fifty-nine) seats were captured by the German Piratenpartei. This is a terrific result — the German Piratenpartei is on a roll right now. Next weekend, on the elections this coming Sunday, we expect the Piratenpartei to take seats in the Parliament in Berlin. It is absolutely amazing that we are taking the political jobs of those who are defending monopolies, locked-down culture and knowledge, and the erosion of civil liberties all over Europe at this rate. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/43006-german-piratenpartei-in-the-parliamentGood News, Everyone!
