Unrelentingly somber and affecting, “Beautiful Boy” is thoroughly tough going. Barely a scene isn’t imbued with the deep, gut-wrenching sadness felt by two parents in the wake of their son’s sudden murderous rampage and suicide.
The middle class suburban couple of Bill (Michael Sheen) and Kate (Maria Bello) are already negotiating the terms of a likely separation when this tragic development further unsettles their marriage. Sam, a quiet college freshman, is introduced at the start.

“Sun City Picture House” is a very engaging documentary short film by David Darg and Bryn Mooser. After the devastating earthquake rocked Haiti last year, food and medical aid poured into the island country, but in the months that followed a pair of Hollywood actresses and their friends had another idea. They wanted to build a movie theater. Maria Bello, who starred in the Adam Sandler comedy “Grown Ups,” and “Tron” actress Olivia Wilde, have documented the efforts of the group of people that brought the theater to life in this new, documentary short.
The documentary focuses on Haitian aid worker Raphael Louigene, whose dream was to build a movie theater, and the two American aid workers who helped him realize that dream by constructing it in just four days: Bryn Mooser from Artists for Peace and Justice, and Dave Darg, who works for Operation Blessing. Mario Bello stated, “The thing that’s needed most in Haiti right now, besides the immediate relief efforts, is joy. And that’s what this movie is about.” This article also presents a photo-gallery of stunning photographs of life in Haiti’s tent cities by New York photographer Wyatt Gallery.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a memorable slide show and the documentary short film.

“The Company Men” is not among those being bandied about as an Oscar contender. No, that’s reserved for films like “Black Swan,” a diet film about ballet. Yet “The Company Men” may be the most important film of the year and certainly the most real.
It is about what’s happening to America’s economy and it is as frightening as your last unemployment check. It is about the way corporate executives care only about stock prices (and by extension their bonuses), employees be damned. And, most important, it is about those who are suddenly let go, their lives shattered.

“Grown Ups” is a very funny Adam Sandler movie spoiled by good intentions. Or it is a moving film about middle age spoiled by childish humor. In short: any way you look at it, “Grown Ups” is flawed. But depending upon your tolerance for pee-pee jokes, it still is entertaining. There were some dry stretches. Still, I have to admit that I laughed. I felt guilty about it, but I laughed.“Grown Ups” is a very funny Adam Sandler movie spoiled by good intentions.... more

Joyful Heart Founder and President, Mariska Hargitay was on hand at the 2010 Joyful Heart Foundation Gala in New York last night along with her smoking hot costar Christopher Meloni who looks different but I can’t put me finger on what the difference is. Aside from its unfortunate title, and a rather pat ending, “The Yellow Handkerchief” is nothing to turn one’s nose up at. Having sat on the shelf since 2008, one might suspect the film is damaged in some way, as are its main characters. However, that’s not the case. The real reason? Probably the marketing angle proved puzzling because it doesn’t conveniently fit a genre.
The film veers dangerously toward sentimentality at times, dashing a hardcore indie cred. Its often somber tone makes it less than ideal for the feel good mode -- though it ultimately succumbs to that model.
William Hurt leads a quartet of top notch performances as Brett Hanson, an ex-convict on the verge of sleepwalking through the remainder of his days. Just released from prison, he is making his way across a battered, post-Katrina Louisiana.Aside from its unfortunate title, and a rather pat ending, “The Yellow... more
