California prisons have plenty of problems but one that you may not often hear about is contraband. That's the subject of tonight's Vanguard episode: Prison Contraband.
What people are sneaking into the clink has changed a bit from old prison movies. Sure, there's plenty of homemade knives and drugs, but one of the biggest problems facing California prison officials these days is actually cell phones. A report released early last month showed over 4000 cell phones confiscated across the state this year.
From the LA Times
"Investigations conducted within California prisons have supported allegations [that] cellphones have been used by incarcerated felons to participate in criminal activity," wrote Cate, secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Crimes committed by inmates using cellphones have included the planning of escapes, restraining order violations, use of stolen credit cards to purchase inmate quarterly packages and the coordination of smuggling contraband into prisons, Cate said."
Authorities have even begun training cell phone sniffing dogs.
Tune in tonight to Vanguard for an in-depth look at the fight against contraband in California prisons.

In a letter from Governor Schwarzenegger to the California State Assembly explaining that he will veto a bill designed to help the Port of San Francisco with financing, the letters line up in a most peculiar way. The author of the bill, Tom Ammiano, recently yelled, “You lie!” at the governor, but the governor’s office simply says what we see in this letter is just “a strange coincidence.”In a letter from Governor Schwarzenegger to the California State Assembly explaining... more

If this is real, and the usually reliable Techcrunch seem to think it is, California's governor Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to impressively sneaked in a hilarious way to let his feelings on recent legislature be known.
Incidentally Arnie's press secretary, Aaron McLear, has insisted it was simply a "weird coincidence." Not that that's stopped Twitter going nuts over this. It's currently a trending topic and shows no sign of easing up just yet.If this is real, and the usually reliable Techcrunch seem to think it is, California's... more

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is calling out his wife, Maria Shriver, for apparently violating a state law he signed — holding her cell phone while driving.
Let me see if I get this straight....
Arnold (smoking an illegal substance) is pointing out his wife for breaking a law he signed.
The hypocrit word just keeps coming up over and over again when it comes to this Austrian clown.
Whose crime is worst:
Arnie smokes a joint. Worse case scenario, he eats too much of Lou Ferrigno's birthday cake, and has to work out an extra hour to take it off his hips.
Maria talks on her cell phone. Worse case scenario, she doesn't see the little kid, riding his bike into the street. Uh, dead kid.
Maybe Arnie might try taking that Escalade in to have a speaker phone for Maria installed. Then, she can be a responsible driver, and he can say he's doing all he can to make sure his own wife obeys the laws he signs into effect!Gov. With the White House quietly working behind the scenes to continue to gain momentum in
drawing support from political opponents, on both sides of the aisle and outside of the Washington elite, they're also sending a clear message to hardline "right-wingers". They will not allow "obstructionists" to interfere with progress. And the White House wasted no time appealing to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to convey the message for bipartisan support in overhauling the healthcare system.
In a statement released by Schwarzenneger earlier today, the governor has made no secret that he has been a longtime supporter of Obama's reform plans. "Our principal goals, slowing the growth in costs, enhancing the quality of care delivered, improving the lives of individuals, and helping to ensure a strong economic recovery, are the same goals that the president is trying to achieve," said Schwarzenneger.
Mayor Bloomberg, an Independent running for re-election on the Republican ticket released a separate statement endorsing the bill stating that this legislation had "great potential to reduce costs for families, businesses and government at every level over the long term, while extending coverage to many millions of the uninsured and investing in proven, cost-effective public health strategies."With the White House quietly working behind the scenes to continue to gain momentum in... more

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined other prominent Republicans in supporting Democratic health care reform legislation.
"As Governor, I have made significant efforts to advance health reform in California," he said in a statement. "As the Obama Administration was launching the current debate on health care reform, I hosted a bipartisan forum in our state because I believe in the vital importance of this issue, and that it should be addressed through bipartisan cooperation."
Schwarzenegger is only the latest in a series of well-known GOPers to express such conciliatory opinions. In an interview with Time magazine last week, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he would vote for the Senate Finance Committee bill. (He later qualified his comments with some criticism of the bill on MSNBC, but he did not take back his words.)California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined other prominent Republicans in... more

A glimmer of hope for CA State Parks - for now.
Gov Schwarzenegger's office released a statement today stating that now CA State Parks will be closing for the rest of this fiscal year, but there will be numerous cuts to park hours and park maintenance. While this seems like a major win for park goers all over the world, the headache isn't over yet.
CA State Parks faces a larger budget cut next year of $22 million, and will be facing this deficit at the end of the fiscal year (June 2010).
Do I smell a measure on the November 2010 ballot???A glimmer of hope for CA State Parks - for now.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called on California's attorney general Wednesday to investigate ACORN, the community organizing group that has recently come under fire in videos produced by conservative activists.
The videos show the group's workers offering advice on how to set up prostitution businesses, the activists have said.
Schwarzenegger sent a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown asking his office to look into ACORN's activities in California, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The advocacy group was criticized after employees were caught on camera appearing to advise a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp to lie about the woman's profession to get housing help.Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called on California's attorney general Wednesday to... more

Two Los Angeles County firefighters were killed Sunday when their vehicle rolled down a mountain side amid the intense flames of a wildfire that threatened 12,000 homes. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger urged those in the fire's path to get out as the blazes rained ash on cars as far away as downtown Los Angeles, spreading in all directions in dry conditions.
Firefighters fixed their attention on the blaze's fast-moving eastern side where flames lapped at the foot of the vital communications and astronomy center of Mount Wilson, and on the northwestern front, where the two firefighters were killed on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.
"We ask for your understanding, for your patience as we move through this difficult time, and please, prayers for the families of our two brothers that we lost," county Deputy Fire Chief Mike Bryant said through tears at a Sunday night press conference.
Bryant said the men's families have been notified. He did not release their identities or give a cause for the crash, and officials at the press conference would take no questions on the deaths.
Television helicopter video on Sunday night showed an upside-down vehicle on the mountain side.
"Our hearts are heavy as we are tragically reminded of the sacrifices our firefighters and their families make daily to keep us safe," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.
The blaze was only about 5 percent contained and had scorched 66 square miles in the Angeles National Forest. Mandatory evacuations were in effect for neighborhoods in Glendale, Pasadena and other cities and towns north of Los Angeles. Officials said air quality in parts of the foothills bordered on hazardous.
The fire, which broke out Wednesday afternoon, was the largest of many burning around California, including a new blaze in Placer County northeast of Sacramento that destroyed several homes and businesses...

Earlier this week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) launched MyIdea4CA.com, a website which encourages Twitter users to “tweet” their ideas for how to “move California forward” and then allows visitors to give each of those ideas an up or down vote. The site has only been live for a few days and already the top three most popular “tweets” involve making marijuana legal, taxed, and regulated in California.
It is encouraging that high-level pols like Gov. Schwarzenegger and President Obama are turning to the Web for new, out-of-the-box ideas but it’s a shame that they have yet to embrace the one proposal which is consistently the most popular.
Nevertheless, those of us yearning for an effective and just marijuana policy will continue to speak truth to power – and it’s only a matter of time before our elected leaders will be forced to listen.Earlier this week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) launched MyIdea4CA.com, a... more
