Conversations about healthcare is headline news. The president's moderate plan for healthcare reform, is radicalizing people who would normally stay at home to watch Fox News.
"Terri Hall, 45, of Starke, Fla., said she felt compelled to become political for the first time this year because she was upset by government spending"
(via)
The Tea Party Express is crossing the country to invoke the image of Obama as Hitler.
And the Billionaires have been spending time at the protests too.
Billionaires for WealthCare
The Billionaires for WealthCare are "a grassroots network of health insurance CEOs, industry lobbyists, talk-show hosts, and others profiting off of our broken health care system."
With catchy slogans like "Let them eat Advil" and "Do no harm... to the bottom line" these not-for-real billionaires, are providing a counter argument to those who earnestly say things like "keep your government hands off my Medicare."
This satirical guerrilla political theater, seems like a far more interesting way to engage the crazies, then the traditional protest. Perhaps by masquerading as a supporter of causes you don't support, you can actually get more people motivated to change things.Conversations about healthcare is headline news. The Rich vs. Poor divide continued in Copenhagen today as delegates from African nations staged a short boycott. The debate is primarily over whether or not to keep the Kyoto treaty, which legally binds developed countries to make emissions cuts but doesn't ask the same of developing countries. Negotiators for developed countries want those same regulations placed on developing countries (with an eye towards China, especially). They're back to negotiating , however, which is a good thing as there are only four days until the bigwigs fly in hoping to sign something.
Over the weekend thousands of protesters took to the streets of Copenhagen and on Saturday more than 900 were arrested. Here's some video from the festivities.
Leah Lamb is still going strong with the live Copenhagen call-in show. Make sure to check that out at 9:15am PST (12:15 pm EST). Here's a clip from Friday's show.

Josh from called me on the telephone to ask me what it meant that the G-20 was taking over economic decision-making from the G-8. It's good news for the leaders of the 12 countries that now get to sit at the big kids table (is more or less what I told him). So does that answer what the protestors are asking for? he asked. Well, I don't think so.
G-20s (or G-any number) and protests go hand in hand these days. As part of their preparations for hosting world leaders, cities also prepare to host thousands or protesters with nearly as many different causes. Why protest these events (which are otherwise pretty bland)? Is it having all those world leaders in one place? It's come to seem almost like a script, world leaders discuss, protesters clash with police, and no one anywhere really talks about what the protesters are opposed to.
So, let me ask this (and I ask as a real question): What use is it protesting the G-20? Is it good enough to just show opposition? What do demonstrators hope to accomplish?Josh from called me on the telephone to ask me what it meant that the G-20 was taking... more

30 March 2010
Aung San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy (NLD) decided unanimously on 29 March 2010, not to re-register the party to participate in the junta’s planned sham 2010 election due to its unfair electoral laws.
National League for Democracy (NLD), unanimous victor of 1990 election, stands firmly on “Shew-Gone-Daing” declaration of which all four main principals are equally important that needs to place in order to have true national reconciliation in Burma, i.e.
To release all political prisoners
To take place genuine dialogue
To revise 2008 constitution
To recognize 1990 election results
By seeing this decision, legitimate leaders of Burma send the very clear message to the world that they honour the plight of the people who lost their lives in 1988 uprising, 1996 student demonstrations, 1998 student demonstrations, 2003 Depeyin massacre, 2007 Saffron revolution, the victims of 2008 Cyclone Nargis, the plight of ethnics people, the plight of the political prisoners and the plight of all people of Burma who have been suffering at the hands of brutal military regime. It also sends the very strong message that they respect the will of people who voted for them in 1990 election.
This is the time that UN should proven itself that it really can make difference.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi once said that;
• The results of these elections will remain valid until such time as the Members of Parliament elected in 1990 by the people have had a chance to get together and decide what the next step is going to be. The world has to make certain that the outcome of these elections is honoured.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also reaffirm her position on UN that;
• We would like to see the UN standing very firmly by the General Assembly resolution* on Burma and to try to implement the terms of the resolution as quickly as possible. And we would like the whole international community to support the UN and this. (*On November 19, 2002, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution strongly urging the Government of Myanmar “to restore democracy and implement the results of the 1990 election and to ensure [...] without delay into substantive and structured dialogue towards democratisation and national reconciliation [...] to release unconditionally and immediately all political prisoners.”)
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for world leaders to call for junta to allow convening people’s parliament according to 1990 election result which is tantamount to implementing “Shwe-Gone-Daing” declaration. Human rights abuses and humanitarian crises have been happening in Burma and long overdue to solve. Unite Nation Security Council must take effective practical action on military regime to stop killing its own people, to stop arresting and torturing political dissidents and to press to honour the 1990 election result in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s party win the landslide victory.
We would like to call for the United Nations Security Council to:
declare it won’t recognize junta’s planned 2010 election and its results
declare junta’s sham 2008 constitution as NULL and VOID
declare it will implement “Shwe-Gone-Daing” declaration as the UN road map for democracy in Burma
For more information please contact Myo Thein, the director of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) at 00-44-208 4939 137 or 00-44-787 788-2386.

Today, the March 4th Day of Action is occurring on college campuses throughout the country. In California students are protesting the state's decline in funding for public education at Cal State and UC schools.
I've been following the action at my alma mater, UC Davis. The California Aggie newspaper has been live tweeting the events from the day. Hundreds of protesters were met with tear gas, bean bags and tasers.
Two hours ago they reported: "Cops are beating people in the front. Arrests being made. Holy shit. Looks like tasers being used."
Were there protests at your school? What happened? Tell us your story.Today, the March 4th Day of Action is occurring on college campuses throughout the... more

~y2009m12d30-Iran-opposition-leaders-driven-out-of-Teheran--slide-show
According to oppostion website Rahesabz.net, former presidential candidate Hossein Moussavi and opposition leader Mehdi Karoubi were driven out of Tehran; citing the official IRNA agency, the site explained that 'members of the Revolutionary Guard and Intelligence Ministry had taken Moussavi and Karoubi in the city of Kelar-Abad (...) to protect them from the wrath of the people'.
Kelar-Abad lies north of Tehran.
On Karoubi's own website, however, his son denied that his father had left the capital.
The official media reported that the two men were removed from Tehran as hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, gathered Wednesday throughout Iran to support the regime and denounce the opposition leaders.~y2009m12d30-Iran-opposition-leaders-driven-out-of-Teheran--slide-show

Several people were killed and more than 300 were arrested in anti-government protests in Tehran Sunday, Iran's Deputy Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan said on state television station IRINN.
The toll was the result of clashes that broke out between demonstrators and security forces as large crowds gathered for Ashura, a major religious observance.
Five people were reported killed in the fighting, Iranian state-run Press TV said late Sunday. A French government statement put the number of fatalities at eight. With tight restrictions on international media, CNN could not independently verify the casualties.Several people were killed and more than 300 were arrested in anti-government protests... more

Italy is gripped by crisis and unemployment and with democracy in danger, but is not the only nation in Western Europe in these conditions. Greece experience a similar situation in many respects. Even though recently there the Socialist Party won the election, still isn't ended the social unrest that followed the death of a 15 years old student, killed by police on 6 December 2008. New clashes between students and the Greek police took place on November 17.

Today thousands of students took to the streets in many cities of Italy for the right to study and against the cuts made by the government and euphemistically called a reform of public schools and universities. On saturday 14, the CGIL union brought 50,000 people in Rome to call for effective measures against the crisis. In the last month there have been many other demonstrations, the protest against racism, the one of soccer fans, the protest of the police left without funds.

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is measured in parts per million. Before the Industrial Revolution, before men began greater coal burning, destruction of forests and use of oil, the concentration was 280 parts per million by volume. We are now at 387. The Kyoto Protocol provided not to exceed 450 parts per million. But it is only a maximum level to avoid the catastrophe, not a disaster. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is measured in parts per... more
