Hostel employee's shock over last known Britt photo

A Bosnian hostel employee has spoken out against Croatian media linking him to holding the key to the mystery of Britt Lapthorne's final hours after he sent them the last known picture of her, taken about 13 hours before she was last seen at a Dubrovnik nightclub.

The man, who did not wish to be named, copied photographs of Ms Lapthorne and two other backpackers from the Facebook page of another backpacker, Dominic Dabrowiecki, and sent them to Croatian media in the belief he would help with the investigation.

Using the alias 'Red Leon', he sent an email stating the pictures he was sending "were taken by a man who was in Dubrovnik at the same time. He was reportedly with her on the night she went missing, returned to his hostel at 7 am and left Dubrovnik the following day. That is all I know.''

But 'Red Leon' was horrified to learn the Slobodna Dalmacija newspaper reported he was possibly withholding crucial information about the case and pointing the finger at Mr Dabrowiecki.

In the photographs, Ms Lapthorne is seen drinking beer in a Dubrovnik cafe with two other travellers, Krys Noseworthy and Gareth Hopkins. Ms Noseworthy has said Mr Dabrowiecki took the pictures.

Mr Dabrowiecki left Dubrovnik on September 18, and later sent a panicked email to Ms Noseworthy saying he was worried about Ms Lapthorne because she had not returned to her hostel.

'Red Leon' told The Age by phone from Bosnia that he had met Mr Dabrowiecki in Sarajevo days before the backpacker made his way to Dubrovnik.

"Dominic was a guest at our hostel. We became Facebook friends. He later went to a Dubrovnik hostel,'' 'Red Leon' told The Age. "I followed the Lapthorne case on the internet and realised Dominic had become Facebook friends with her on September 16 and he left Dubrovnik around September 19.''

"My only intention in taking those pictures from Facebook was to help,'' 'Red Leon' said. "I'm shocked this has been completely taken out of context.''

He said he was unaware Australian media had, by that stage, spoken to many backpackers who spent time with Ms Lapthorne on her final night, including Mr Dabrowiecki.

The picture sent by 'Red Leon' is widely available on Facebook, including on some pages devoted to the Lapthorne case.

According to Ms Noseworthy, she and Ms Lapthorne met Mr Dabrowiecki in Mostar, Bosnia and decided to go with him to the Dubrovnik Backpackers Club, where he already had a booking.
