Painter Randall Stoltzfus shows "luminous paintings of visionary landscapes" at LIMN Art Gallery, precisely 2,905 miles further west of the artist's Brooklyn Studio. Critic Barbara Rose says Stoltzfus "is not afraid of the hard work required to create his sophisticated, painstakingly detailed, labor-intensive paintings. His work recalls the romantic mood of the American masters William Inness and Albert Pinkham Ryder... Stoltzfus is a strong new voice in painting based on an implacable faith in craft and in the resonance of paint itself that, like the religion of his Mennonite forebears, can resist all efforts to stamp it out."

"Kerry James Marshall stands before a canvas the size of a movie screen. The milky greens, blues and pinks, rendered in paint-by-number patterns and connect-the-dots figures, seem as if they might swallow him and his id whole. But Mr. Marshall and, he hopes, visitors to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art can hold the Crayola madness in check by studying silhouettes embedded in the landscape.
The two three-story murals depict Mount Vernon and Monticello, the estates of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Planted in Where’s Waldo fashion among the bushes and trees in this childlike maze are outlines of the slaves who maintained the estates of a new nation’s champions of liberty.
“The coloring book stuff seduces people to become engaged and has them acknowledge the subtext of these places at the same time,” said Mr. Marshall, who painted the work over a two-week period last month with a crew of local muralists.
Mr. Marshall, a Chicago artist known for exploring racial identity and black history, said he wants people to acknowledge the contradictions that underlie the veneration of the founding fathers. “I think a more realistic representation is appropriate," he said, rather "than the kind of mythologizing that goes with Jefferson as the author of the Declaration of Independence and Washington as the father of the country."""Kerry James Marshall stands before a canvas the size of a movie screen. On February 17th join author Bruce Sterling, technology pundit Paul Saffo, and other special guests at the Berkeley Art Museum to mourn the loss of our long time acquaintance, the Analog Television Signal. Born in the 01920's the signal has been an integral part of all our lives, bringing us news of the rich, the famous, the politicians, the wars, the Apollo landings, the thrills of victory, and the agonies of defeat. While Analog Television has not been a good friend to us all, it has been important to each and every one of us. Analog Television is survived by its wife Digital Television, and its second cousin Internet Television.
Please bring your Analog TV with antenna for display (and free recycling by ACCRC), as we will stack as many sets as we can in memoriam to our life long friend. At the ceremony Paul Saffo will spell out the sordid history of the Analog TV Signal's life, the group Author and Punisher will perform the funeral dirge, and just before the signal winks out for the last time, author Bruce Sterling will deliver the eulogy via pirate television broadcast supplied by Neighborhood Public Radio.
Note: Bruce Sterling will not be speaking live, this will be a televised appearance he has created specifically for this event.
Also note: Apropos of the soap-operatic life of TV, there is a chance that Congress may issue an 11th hour stay of the "do not resuscitate order" on the Analog TV Signal, however this event will go forward either way as February 17 marks the day they will begin going off air.
Donated TV's will be responsibly reused or recycled by The Alameda County Computer Resource Center who will be on hand to help with TV collection. If you cant make it, but have a TV that needs to be recycled ACCRC will take it free!

October 25 & 26, 11 am to 6 pm
Fivepoints Arthouse will be showcasing several works from local north beach resident artists, as well as work by our founders, Jason Bryan, Erik Parra, and Jessica Laurent. On Saturday, October 25, we will screen films from Telegraph Hill's own Judy Irving: ì19 Arrests, No Convictions,î is about a legendary Italian-American bar owner who redeems himself as a San Francisco Bay open-water swimmer, "escaping" from Alcatraz to the mainland; and a SNEAK PREVIEW of new sequences from the double-disc ìWild Parrotsî Collectorís Edition DVD, which will be released nationally Oct. 28th.
To help increase foot traffic in our neighborhood during the weekend of ArtSpan's Open Studios, and, to create an opportunity for more artists to participate, THD's Art & Culture Committee is organizing an art walk and inviting participation of all artists and merchants in North Beach.
Artists will be included on a map along with everybody participating in the Art Walk and/or the Open Studios. Regardless of whether you're planning to show your work/performance/poetry reading on the sidewalk, in your studio, or in a gallery, we would like to know about it and get you on our list of participating artists and merchants and have you on the map. At no cost to you, we will print this list and design a map and make it available to the public.
Businesses and storefront owners are lined up to showcase an artist's work or, lend their empty storefront window for that weekend.
This event is not limited to visual arts. If you're a poet, writer, or a musician, plan a reading or performance at any location in the hood and let us know.

Neal Stephenson's long-awaited book Anathem will be released to the public on Tuesday September 9, 02008. Join us on this evening to hear the author read from his new work and converse with Stewart Brand and Danny Hillis of The Long Now Foundation. We'll also have a special musical performance of math-based chanting created for Anathem by composer David Stutz . A book signing, reception and all-around celebration will follow (we'll have a cash bar too). Additional copies of the book will also be for sale at the event, but we can only guarantee that pre-ordered books will be signed.
The concept behind Anathem germinated in 01999* when Danny Hillis asked Stephenson and several other contributors to sketch out their ideas of what Long Now's 10,000 Year Clock might look like. Stephenson tossed off a quick sketch and promptly forgot about it. Five years later, however, when he was between projects, the idea came back to him and he began to explore the possibility of building a novel around it - Anathem is the result.

Many have lamented the slow fade of vinyl records. Even if you were born after the rise of the CD, it's easy to get nostalgic about the warm crackle of the spinning turntable or the large-scale beauty of album art. Lower Haters' newest show is a record reconnaissance, bringing vinyl into the digital age without diminishing its traditional pleasures. More than 30 local artists have turned shiny black discs into canvases, flooding the grooves with paint. At the opening, DJs TopCat, Romanowski, and Enki put their vinyl to use the old-fashioned way.
