"Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader named Matt Gonzalez, a former San Francisco Board of Supervisors president and 2003 mayoral contender, as his running mate today.
The consumer activist introduced Gonzalez as his vice-presidential candidate at a news conference in Washington, D.C.
"I have no illusions about what's happening here today," Gonzalez said at the news conference at the National Press Club, referring to the long-shot nature of their independent candidacy. But he added, "I've never entered a political contest with the idea that it couldn't be won."
He also said he also believed he had moved debates leftward in previous runs for office, including his 2003 mayoral campaign.
Nader said he got to know Gonzalez during a 2005 anti-Iraq war campaign in which they traveled up and down California. Gonzalez, an attorney, also worked on ballot access issues for Nader's 2004 presidential bid, when the candidate was listed in just 34 states.
"He has a great, steadfast commitment to justice," Nader told The Chronicle after the press conference. "He's shown it in his work on the Board of Supervisors, he's shown it in his work on criminal justice issues, electoral reform and his work in urban politics and problems."
Nader added, "He's a beautiful writer, he's an artist, he's a man for all seasons and he's got a great political future."
Gonzalez said in an interview that he and Nader had discussed the possibility of joining on a presidential ticket for several weeks.
"Ralph Nader is going to run whether I join him or not," he said. "But if I'm his running mate, then I can put at the forefront election issues, election reforms that I worked on in San Francisco. I think that can have an impact on the race."
Gonzalez, 42, was elected supervisor in December 2000 from San Francisco's District 5, serving the Haight Ashbury, Inner Sunset and Western Addition, and served for the final two years of his tenure as president of the board. He narrowly lost the 2003 mayoral election to Gavin Newsom. Since leaving office in January 2005, he has practiced civil law and exhibited his collage artwork in local galleries.""Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader named Matt Gonzalez, a former San... more

He also talks about the concept he developed with one of the Uranus' new moons co-discoverer, Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, with the visitors at his San Francisco Open Studios weekend.

Kay Weber is an artist who lives in San Francisco. His artwork is paper and metal sheet cut outs.
Papercutting (Scherenschnitte) is an ancient Art which requires patience and extreme attention to details from the artist during his process of creating an art project. It is extremely difficult to repair a mistake, once the cut is made. In order to avoid errors, the artist becomes quiet meticulous on the way he/ she executes every single drawing or cut within the material. Once an incision is made: it is final!
The Moons of Uranus is a recent paper cut, inspired on the new discovered moons of the planet Uranus by NASA scientists. The moons have been named after Shakespearean characters and have been incorporated on the concept of the artwork. MOTIONLAB/Hermesdorf & Mathias... I should have posted this earlier, but you can still go tomorrow night (sunday) if you can get tickets. This dance company is a San Francisco favorite and choreographer/teacher Kathleen Hermesdorf is a genius of movement. The consideration for every limb that bends is apparent in the unique aesthetic presented onstage. Don't miss a wonderful investigation of body weight, gravity, and space. Highly recommended.
