The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $10 million to the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University and PATH, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization, to advance a technology for the painless, self-administration of flu vaccine using patches containing tiny microneedles that dissolve into the skin.

The Brazilian man who pushed dozens of sewing needles into his two-year-old stepson says he wanted to kill him to spite his wife, say media reports.
Roberto Carlos Magalhaes, 30, made his confession in a telephone interview from jail with Globo Television.
The boy is recovering after surgery to remove the needles, which came perilously close to his heart.
Mr Magalhaes said he got the boy drunk on wine before inserting the needles, up to three times in a month.

A Brazilian toddler has up to 50 sewing needles inside him, which doctors suspect were deliberately inserted.
The two-year-old boy was taken to hospital by his mother. X-rays revealed the needles, including one in his lung.
His mother said she did not know how the needles, some 2in (5cm) long, got inside him. Police are investigating.

I am not a fan of needles at all, therefore, I would be an avid supporter of this 'painless patch' design, revealed by Scientists at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Lined with miniature 'microneedles', these patches are likely to replace flu shots, vaccines and diabetes injections, as a more efficient and healthier way to give such medication. It is also possible that a version of the patches could be created and used for treating eye diseases.
"It's our goal to get rid of the need for hypodermic needles in many cases and replace them with a patch that can be painlessly and simply applied by a patient," says Mark Prausnitz, Ph.D. "If you can move to something that's as easy to apply as a band-aid, you've now opened the door for people to self-administer their medicine without special training."I am not a fan of needles at all, therefore, I would be an avid supporter of this... more

When I was nine, I was rescued," says industrial designer Hân Pham. She's not speaking metaphorically. Fleeing the communist Vietnamese regime in the 1980s, Pham, her older brother, and her fathera political dissidentwere plucked from the China sea by West German humanitarians after spending 36 hours crammed with 100 others in a fishing barge the size of a raft. They were taken to a U.N. refugee camp in Singapore, where a dirty vaccination needle caused a weeks-long battle with bacterial infection, which left her permanently scarred. "The terrible irony," she points out, "is the thing that was supposed to cure me made me worse." Antivirus, the simple design she came up with as a result of her childhood ordeal, just scooped the People's Choice prize at the prestigious Index: Awards. When I was nine, I was rescued," says industrial designer Hân Pham.... more
