10/26/11 - The Hedz-Up Report covers Occupy Wall Street's, Healthcare for the 99%, as they lead a "March Against the Health Insurance Industry." Coverage picks up at final destination, St. Vincent's Hospital, as local activists from the Coalition for a New Village Hospital and Hands Off St. Vincents!, prepare to greet the marchers and conduct a teach-in.
Real estate developer Bill Rudin, has purchased the hospital property for approximately $260 million and has announced plans to build luxury condominiums. Also planned is an "urgent care center," which activists argue will leave the area without an adequately equipped full-fledged hospital.
More to come, stay tuned.

“A Year in New York” is an enchanting, emotionally moving five-minute documentary short film by videographer Andrew Clancy, accompanied by Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow’s beautiful song “We Don’t Eat.” Sometimes words cannot do justice to life in a big city, as “A Year in New York” so entrancingly confirms. The film reveals that despite the chaos that surrounds urban life, there is a common thread of excitement and resilient optimism.
“A Year in New York” presents the viewer with a stream of quintessential New York visual imagery, from the No. 7 train rolling past Silvercup Studios' iconic film and television complex, to die-hard Rangers fans losing it at Madison Square Garden; from runners and rollerbladers cruising through city parks, to late-night, outdoor summer concerts; from blinking beacons on NYPD police cars, to the sparkling lights of the colossal Rockefeller Christmas Tree, resulting in a stunning homage to the city that never sleeps and to its lucky inhabitants.
This piece includes a number of wonderful high-resolution color photographs, a magnificent photo-gallery and the entrancing documentary short film.

“Multi-Facial” is a fascinating, emotionally moving 1995 short film that was written, directed and produced by Vin Diesel, who also played the starring role in the film. Whether you’re a cult fan of Vin Diesel’s high-octane action thrillers, or a movie snob who can’t stand him, you need to leave your biases at the door on this one: “Multi-Facial” is an awesome short film.
As a struggling actor in the early 1990′s, Vin Diesel couldn’t get any jobs. So he went in the time-honored direction for out-of-work actors and made his own film. The semi-autobiographical short film presents a dramatic male monologue about the problems that accompany an actor as he goes to a variety of auditions, due to his multi-ethnic appearance. It was a pretty successful move for him too; the film played at Cannes in 1995, and based largely on the impression the short made upon Steven Spielberg, Diesel was able to land his star-making role in “Saving Private Ryan.”
Vin Diesel’s monologue in the closing audition scene is unexpectedly emotional, effortlessly and organically concluding the themes built up throughout the film. A wonderful showcase for Diesel’s real talents, the film works amazingly well cinematically, making it one of the greatest short films ever made about acting.
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the remarkable short film, “Multi-Facial.”

Further charging the atmosphere is the bombshell news, announced earlier in the day, of the Rudin family's $260 million deal w/ the bankrupt St. Vincent's Hospital. Plans call for the construction of a state-of-the-art "comprehensive care center," across the street from the shuttered SVH. The hospital's main building would be converted into condos.

Photo: From left, Max Florin, Fannie Rosen, Dora Evans and Josephine Cammarata were among the final six unidentified victims of the Triangle Waist Company factory fire of 1911, which killed 146 and influenced building codes, labor laws and politics in the years that followed.

100 Years Later, the Roll of the Dead in a Factory Fire Is Complete
By JOSEPH BERGER
PART ONE…
In the Cemetery of the Evergreens on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, there is a haunting stone monument to the garment workers who died in the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire of 1911 but were never identified. It contains the bas-relief figure of a kneeling woman, her head bowed, seemingly mourning not only the deaths, but also the fact that those buried below were so badly charred that relatives could not recognize them.
Almost a century after the fire, the five women and one man, all buried in coffins under the Evergreens monument, remained unknown to the public at large, though relatives and descendants knew that a loved one had never returned from the burning blouse factory.
Now those six have been identified, largely through the persistence of a researcher, Michael Hirsch, who became obsessed with learning all he could about the victims after he discovered that one of those killed, Lizzie Adler, a 24-year-old greenhorn from Romania, had lived on his block in the East Village.
And so, for the first time, at the centennial commemoration of the fire on March 25 outside the building in Greenwich Village where the Triangle Waist Company occupied the eighth, ninth and 10th floors, the names of all 146 dead will finally be read.
The fire was a wrenching event in New York’s history, one that had a profound influence on building codes, labor laws, politics and the beginning of the New Deal two decades later.
Among the most anguishing aspects was the memory of the more than 50 young immigrant women and men who were forced to leap from the high floors to escape the inferno. However, many of the 146 victims — 129 women and 17 men — burned to death in the loft building, at Washington Place and Greene Street, and had no telltale jewelry or clothing to help identify them.
The day the six unidentified victims were buried was the culmination of the city’s outpouring of grief; hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers turned out in a driving rain for a symbolic funeral procession sponsored by labor unions and other organizations, while hundreds of thousands more watched from the sidewalks.
A century later, names and even circumstances have finally been attached to those “unknowns.”
“We consider his list to be the best ever produced on the question,” said Curtis Lyons, director of the Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University, which holds one of the most thorough repositories about the Triangle fire.
Workers United, the garment workers’ union, and David Von Drehle, who wrote “Triangle: The Fire That Changed America,” a 2003 history of the fire, said they also regarded Mr. Hirsch’s list as the most authoritative.
Descendants of those who perished, like a great-granddaughter of one 33-year-old victim, Maria Lauletti, were heartened by the news, though no one interviewed had yet made a decision whether to exhume bodies from the Evergreens cemetery and attempt a DNA match.
“It means that there’s recognition that she actually died in the fire,” said Mary Ann Lauletti Hacker, 57, of Fountain Hills, Ariz. “To me, that’s a finality. She positively can be part of the record of those who died.”
No New York City agencies and no newspapers at the time produced a complete list of the dead, Mr. Hirsch said. The most thorough list — 140 names — was compiled by Mr. Von Drehle when he wrote his book, and that was largely based on names plucked from accounts in four contemporary newspapers.
The obscurity of their names is evidence of the times, when lives were lived quietly and people were forced by economic and familial circumstances to swiftly move on from tragedies — with no Facebook or reality television cameras to record their every step and thought.

2/9/11 - The Hedz-Up Report covers the release of four community activists the day after their arrest for staging a sit-in at the site of the former St. Vincent's Hospital. All have been charged with criminal trespass.
The activists, a part of the newly-formed group Hands Off St. Vincent's!, released the following statement:
Arrest: Community Activists Arrested at St. Vincents Hospital Sit-In
New York, NY – On February 8, at 10:30 am, four former patients and impassioned community members entered the building at the location of the closed down Saint Vincent's Hospital. These activists then sat on the ground, unfurling a banner reading "Guilty: Neglect!" and began to chant - refusing to move. Saint Vincent's personnel closed off that section of the building - currently operating as a Credit Union - and refused entry to members of the credit union as well as persons employed within the building. Two hours after their arrival, the four activists were arrested and taken away by the police.
For 284 days, 1.3 million New Yorkers have been without a hospital in the West Village. Since St. Vincent’s illegal closure on April 30, 2010, the community has been laden with false promises, patronized with a bogus needs assessment and forced, with tragic consequences, to seek emergency or medical care at already overcrowded uptown or East-side hospitals.
“Everyday that passes is critical,” said Iana Di Bona, one of the arrested activists, “Our elected officials have the ability to turn things around, yet they do nothing. It is so important to speak out and to continue to pressure and hold them accountable to service the needs of our community.”
Commitment for a New Village Hospital by the people of the West Village and all of New York City has not wavered. Any politician not actively working to get a new hospital is a target. That is a promise the St. Vincent’s Hospital Community Activists intend to keep.

Hands off St. Vincent's! A Community Rallies to Reclaim their Hospital
New York, NY - In April 2010, after 160 years of service to the people of New York City, St. Vincent's closed directly due unconscionable government and private industry failures. As a result, people are dying, emergency rooms at other hospitals are overflowing with the influx of patients, local businesses are hurting from the loss of business St. Vincent's provided and 3,500 people have lost their jobs.
Hands off St. Vincent's is a group of New Yorkers who have made an unwavering commitment to fight through non-violent direct action (including civil disobedience) for a New Village Hospital that provides equal services to what was provided at St. Vincent's Hospital.
"This closing is devastating, like a death", says Angela Jones, a Greenwich Village resident and former St. Vincent's emergency room volunteer. "We're all angry and we want our hospital back!"
The group has promised to take direct action against those who work against the establishment of a New Village Hospital or are inactive in this restoration. The list of targets includes elected officials (or government agencies), developers, purchasers, judges, etc.
"We will not waiver from our goal whatsoever", says activist and fellow Greenwich Village resident Timothy Lunceford, "Anyone who stands in our way can and will be a target. The only acceptable resolution would be the revival of our hospital. Stand in our way and you will feel the might of our rage."
Civil disobedience trainings and action planning sessions will commence on Saturday, January 8 from 2-5 pm at the University Settlement at the Houston Street Center located at 273 Bowery - Classroom 3. (Directions: The Center is at the corner of Bowery and Houston. The staff will direct all "Hands Off St. Vincent's" participants. Take the F train to 2nd Avenue stop or B-D trains to Broadway-Lafayette or 6 train to Bleecker St.). A steady wave of actions will begin shortly thereafter.

In 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, with the Harlem Community Choir, recorded their message against war as a peace anthem, a song that has also become a Christmas standard: “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” According to the John Lennon Museum, Lennon wrote the song as an attempt to get people to see war at a grassroots level and for them to take responsibility for the world around them.
So this is now the beginning of the Christmas season. And what have you done? The opening lines of the song, sung so nonchalantly by Lennon, serve as a call-to-action for us all. The holidays become critical moments in the year for personal assessments, to review our choices. And to make things better. If you want it.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, as well as the classic Christmas music video.
