Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was a prominent American pop artist, whose work was heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. He himself described Pop art as, “not American painting but actually industrial painting.” Lichtenstein’s early paintings of women were based on cartoons and mostly blond, they are anonymous, beautiful and often unhappily bothered, usually by men. Just when you thought you’d seen enough Pop Art to last a lifetime, Lichtenstein’s portrayals in some way glorify the American woman by giving innocuous images of her generic concocted self and her roiling emotions such blazing formal power.
This piece includes a number of photographs, as well as a documentary short film.

“Whatever Lola Wants” is a very sexy short film/music video directed by Dan Blank for The Satin Dollz, a troupe of hot vintage pin-up dancers in the Los Angeles area. “Bad News” is a remarkable animated short film created by Bastian Böhm and Nico Uthe. The film has been named to the Guggenheim Museum’s shortlist for its “YouTube Play: A Biennial of Creative Video” contest, which has generated some 23,000 submissions since it began in June.
The viewer is confronted by headlines proclaiming the end of the world, reports of terrible financial crises and fears of an impending apocalypse. “Bad News” presents the viewer with a question about what kinds of consequences could be caused by sensational news reports, to what extent does mass-media become a form of catastrophic self-fulfilling prophecy.
This piece includes a number of photographs, as well as the fascinating animated short film.

“Dot” is a new 90-second animated short film directed by Sumo Science (a.k.a. Will Studd and Ed Patterson) at Aardman Animations. Aardman (the creators of Wallace & Gromit) has done many amazing things in animation and earned dozens of awards, but none is likely to be quite as unusual as its new film “Dot” earning a spot in Guinness Book of Records for the smallest stop-motion animation character in a film. All the minuscule detail was shot using the new Nokia N8 smartphone, along with the CellScope technology.
The film features little Dot, a tiny 9mm girl who wakes up in a magical, magnified world and discovers that her surroundings are caving in all around her. She escapes the encroaching wave of destruction as her world unravels via a path made up of tiny, familiar objects, such as pins, pencil shavings, nuts and bolts, coins and a bumblebee, until she finally finds peace by knitting herself a blanket from the very stuff that pursues her.
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the amazing animated short film, “Dot.”

“The Unseen Sea” is a stunningly beautiful time-lapse short film by Simon Christen. The San Francisco Bay area hardly needs any embellishment, its natural beauty speaks for itself. But this HD short film gives gorgeous artistic expression to the alluring landscape of this coastal region. Clouds take on the appearance of waves, and lights shimmer like flowing lava, as the collection of time lapses rolls by. Nick Cave provides the accompanying music, “Mary’s Song” from the soundtrack of “Assassination of Jesse James.”

“America by Car” is an acclaimed series of photographs by the master photographer Lee Friedlander. Driving through most of the country’s fifty states in ordinary rental cars, he took his black-and-white, square-format photographs entirely from the interior of the rental cars. Friedlander employed the brilliantly simple idea of using the sideview mirror, rearview mirror, the windshield, and the side windows as picture frames within which to record reflections of this country’s eccentricities and obsessions at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Friedlander’s collection of photographs isn’t arranged in a manner that provides an “On the Road” style narrative. Instead, he groups images by subject, not geography: monuments, churches, houses, factories, ice cream shops, plastic Santas, roadside memorials. Every snapshot includes and employs the vehicle’s interior and exterior elements as a means of fracturing and multiplying the image, providing a submersive sensory experience, like the one in which a driver might engage when glancing out at or studying something other than the road. You also can recognize the keen sense of humor at play in many of the juxtapositions: a chain-link palm tree standing in the desert, a photo of a sign offering a photo-op in a quarter mile. Finally, there’s the massive glory of disorder, a kind of celebration of roadside nonsense.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a wonderful slide show and two videos.

For the past four years, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who have walked by or on top of the orange lines have unwittingly passed what is the biggest graffiti tag in the world. The tag, which is so vast that all parts of it cannot be viewed at the same time, was created by an artist known as Momo in 2006 and consists of a single paint line that runs about eight miles long and spells out his name.
It runs from the East River to the Hudson River and extends north to 14th Street and south to Grand Street. The line runs over curbstones and subway grates and zigzags around lampposts and manhole covers. Its route begins at the edge of a West Side pier and ends after crossing a footbridge over the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive. “I wanted to make a trail that people could follow,” Momo said. “And I realized that I could write something if I planned it out with the street grid.”
The project was inspired by a series of purple footprints that were painted on Manhattan sidewalks in 1986, which stretched all the way from the Upper East Side down to Foley Square. Those mysterious markings led to a spot on Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side, where the city had bulldozed an elaborate community garden called the Garden of Eden, which had been created by a squatter named Adam Purple. Momo said he glimpsed the footprints as a child and was captivated.

“A Caballo” is a new film by photographer and filmmaker Matthew Donaldson, who celebrates the raw power of man and beast by capturing Nacho Figueras on one of his favorite horses in minute detail. The polo champion spins a sumptuous 180 in Donaldson’s slow-motion epic. The bronzed Argentine horsemen that swarm Long Island’s polo fields each summer are tall, dark, handsome and, with the globe-trotting, sun-chasing lifestyle their sport afford, indecently glamorous. The most storied of all these Latin gods is Ignacio (Nacho) Figueras, who with his chiseled jaw, moody brown eyes and tousled locks is not only one of the world’s top 100 polo players, but the face of Ralph Lauren Black Label and Polo fragrances worldwide, and, according to a 2009 issue of Vanity Fair, the second most handsome man in the world. Born in Argentina, where polo rivals soccer as the national sport, Figueras began playing at the age of eight and became a professional at 17.
He began his secondary career as a model in 2000 after being introduced to legendary fashion photographer Bruce Weber at a dinner party, and found that his raised profile enabled him to be an ambassador in the democratization of polo. He was the brains behind the annual Veuve Cliquot tournament on Governor’s Island that has introduced the sport to a whole new generation of New Yorkers.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the dazzling slow-motion short film.

“Monument” is a very touching three-minute short film created by the English filmmaker, Robin Schmidt. The film was made as part of the competition in support of the Fireflies Charity, which recognizes relatives and friends’ battles with cancer. This year they asked for entries for a film challenge to create a three minute film about courage. “Monument” is kind of an urban fairytale about an aged Rastafarian in a wheelchair, who relives a knife attack and decides to rid the community of its knife problem once and for all by magnetizing his body.
The film was a finalist in the Fireflies competition earlier this year, and won the Bahamas 14 Islands Film Challenge. Schmidt is currently editing a full-length version, which will be going on the festival circuit very soon.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the remarkable short film.

“Back of the House” is a behind the scenes look at the world of fine dining by photographer Michael Harlan Turkell. This collection of photographs reveals restaurants’ often unrecognized subcultures; it presents the artistry, diligence, precision and camaraderie that endures throughout the chaos.
The vivacious celebrity chefs who are prominent in today’s pop culture give the impression that their work merely springs from their own energetic imaginations. In reality, their product is the work of a large team of people whose efforts and skills too often go unrecognized and unappreciated by both gourmands and the general public. Turkell’s project celebrates these people’s hard work and captures perfectly the atmosphere of the back of the house.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, a slide show and a documentary short film.

“Detroit Experiences” is a series of photographs by the legendary photographer, Robert Frank. In 1955 and 1956, Frank traveled the U.S. taking photographs for his groundbreaking book “The Americans”, published in 1958. With funding from a prestigious Guggenheim grant, he set out to create a large visual record of America, and Detroit was one of his early stops. Inspired by autoworkers, the cars they made, along with local lunch counters, drive-in movies and public parks such as Belle Isle, Frank transformed everyday experiences of Detroiters into an extraordinary visual statement about American life.

“Insomnia” is a quietly moving short film by Bell Soto, a photographer based in New York City. Soto has shot exclusive collections from fashion designers including Dior Hommer, Veronique Branquihno and Xavier Delcour.
Insomnia can be regarded as the desperate anthem of the lonely, a song about love and the ceaseless, furtive search for love, set in the neon-lit world of urban America, the night-time worlds of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and the French Quarter of New Orleans. America at night transforms its dark cities into the unmistakable shape of loneliness. In the solitude of dark evening, there is nothing left but the night, the night that is like a long voyage on which you can feel the body laboring its way through life, resembling the pounding of the engines and the straining of the hull of a ship at sea. Restlessness wells insatiable inside us.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the touching short film, “Insomnia.”
