Is this because there is no incentive for them to do so? Or because they simply do not wish to do so? Surely they must see the devastation climate change is wrecking on their country. Seeing it from just an economic or a political point of view however, will not bring them to the place they must be in order to create policies that truly address this crisis. How long will China be permitted to call itself a "developing" country to get out of having to pledge to specific goals? As much as I do believe the U.S. must lead on setting goals that reduce GHGs, China and India whose economies are growing the fastest will need to also take some responsibility for the pollution they are making as well. But time is running out. So how long do we wait?Is this because there is no incentive for them to do so? Or because they simply do not... more

Beyond the usual arguements for and against new nuclear energy plants, this ABC radio national program focuses on the case of Niger and the push from outside forces to gain access to their uranium. It talks about the destruction of civil society and the deep divisions being purposely fostered in order to keep the country unstable and extract that uranium for all those new nuclear power plants being planned in the first world.Beyond the usual arguements for and against new nuclear energy plants, this ABC radio... more

The international community had pushed for stronger sanctions against the burmese junta. Japan cuts millions of dollars in aid. big frickin deal. I think sanctions will force the country into deeper isolation and further threaten the livelihood of its citizens. Many of whom have been locked up after the protests. Plus, just because the EU, Japan, and the US decided to impose new sanctions, embargos, whatever... We are basically handing over the influence and power to countries like China and India to step in and fill the void in Burma, thus further lifting China's role as a developing world power.
So is this really a move forward to pushing for change or just a pacified attempt to keep the order of world politics moving right along?

The acclaimed American filmmaker David Lynch has brought his own distinctive style to the issue of Middle East peace in a meeting with the Israeli President, Shimon Peres.
Lynch, whos well-known for films such as Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and the Twin Peaks television series, told Peres he wanted to help bring peace to the region.
The filmmaker has been an advocate of transcendental meditation for more than three decades and he told the Israeli president that the practice could provide the Jewish state and the Middle East with better protection than armies.
Peres, a veteran of politics and conflict, welcomed Lynchs perspective and his visit, although he did appear bemused by the proposals.

2007 is the International year of solidarity with Saharawi People. The self determination process of the former Spanish Sahara is supported by UN resolutions since 1987. These state was abandoned by Spain in 1975, being immediatly occupied by Morocco and Mauritania.
Western Sahara has been on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories since the 1960s when it was a Spanish colony.
The Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front independence movement (and government of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic or SADR) dispute control of the territory. Since a United Nations-sponsored cease-fire agreement in 1991, most of the territory has been controlled by Morocco, with the remainder under the control of Polisario/SADR. Internationally, the major powers such as the United States have taken a generally ambiguous and neutral position on each side's claims, and have pressed both parties to agree on a peaceful resolution. Both Morocco and Polisario have sought to boost their claims by accumulating formal recognition, from largely minor states. Polisario has won formal recognition for SADR from roughly 45 states, and was extended membership in the African Union, while Morocco has won formal recognition for its position from 25 states, as well as the membership of the Arab League[1][2]. In both instances, recognitions have over the past two decades been extended and withdrawn according to changing international trends.
