We all made it to another year. We are 13 years into the new millennium and not that much has really changed. But as with any new year, people are making commitments and resolutions thinking this will be a better year. We caught up with the last newspaper reader who was, as usual, on the couch reading the latest blues and news. Let's see if he is ready to jump into the digital generation. We all made it to another year. We are 13 years into the new millennium and not that... more

olks; the question is ripe for the asking: How come Republicans always try to block the vote by citing non-existent rampant voter fraud, when it’s almost always Republicans who are indicted for that particular crime?

GOP Political Cannibalism: The rats are getting nervous as they watch the ever-sinking ship that is the Republican brand descend into – oh, I don’t know, let’s call it madness – leaving little to no room for party moderates who might actually be interested in governing in a sane manner.

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives quietly passed a bill that critics insist guarantees unlimited military aid to the government of Israel. HR 4133, dubbed the “United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012,” makes it “the policy of the United States to help Israel preserve its qualitative military edge” and “to provide Israel the military capabilities necessary to deter and defend itself by itself against any threats.”
The bill passed by a vote of 411-2 with nine members voting “present.” The two “no” votes were cast by Texas Congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.), former chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the longest currently serving member of Congress.
Paul assailed the bill for being “one-sided” and “counter-productive” and argued that it weakened the America’s claims of being an honest broker seeking peace in the Middle East. He also took issue with the bill’s statement that U.S. policy should be to defend “the security of Israel as a Jewish state.”
“According to our Constitution,” argued Paul, “the policy of the United States government should be to protect the security of the United States, not to guarantee the religious, ethnic, or cultural composition of a foreign country.”

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" harkens back to the bad old days when careers and lives were ruined by Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy, an alcoholic, demagogic Senator from Wisconsin. His bullying excesses caused far worse damage to the nation than the most evil of Communists ever did. Rep. Allen West has now begun channeling Fail Gunner Joe as a sop to extremists."Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" harkens... more

Unbelievable! -- The Republicans have obviously grown tired of members from the Congressional Black Caucus wearing "hoodies" to bring attention to the issue of racial profiling in America, so the GOP came prepared today to enforce a stupid rule about members of Congress not wearing "hats" on the House floor...

A rather worrisome bit of censoring took place today at the House of Representatives, which had a split-second pro-forma session this morning.
A Democratic effort to force an up-or-down vote on the Senate’s payroll tax cut extension plan was hastily halted by Speaker Pro Tempore Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who swiftly adjourned the House without acknowledging Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer’s repeated cries of “Mr. Speaker.”
Despite being rudely shutdown by Fitzpatrick, Hoyer went on to have his say, excoriating Republicans for allowing the tax cut to expire despite the potential damage to the already struggling economy.
As Hoyer was yielding to another Democrat, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), ranking member on the House Budget Committee, the mic suddenly cut out, followed shortly by the footage.
C-SPAN later tweeted that it “has no control over the U.S. House TV cameras – the Speaker of the House does,” suggesting that someone in House Speaker John Boehner’s office ordered the live feed off the air.
Less than a year ago, C-SPAN’s asked Boehner for permission to install privately-operated cameras in the House. That request was denied.A rather worrisome bit of censoring took place today at the House of Representatives,... more

A bit of an emergency: The rumor all over Capitol Hill is that the House version of the Internet Blacklist Bill will be introduced this week, probably on Wednesday.
Our allies on the Hill say the bill's so bad that it could effectively destroy Youtube, Twitter, and other sites that rely on user-generated content by making the sites' owners legally responsible for everything their users post.
Nobody will want to take that risk, so sites like Youtube and Twitter could be forced to shut down.
Facebook, Myspace, and Google+ would be at risk. The cyberlocker and streaming provisions could affect your iPhone, Android, AmazonCloud, Pandora, Grooveshark and even your email accounts.
It also includes provisions that would make it a felony to stream unlicensed content -- including cover band performances, karaoke videos, video game play-throughs, and more.
And all of this is being driven by a few major corporations who are trying to protect their private profits.
Will you use the form at right to ask your Congressmember not to cosponsor the legislation, at least until they've heard our concerns?
