Is your representative holding a public town hall meeting this August recess? No Labels called every office, and only 40% are scheduling open town hall meetings. It’s a sad sign of the state of affairs when our elected officials don’t have time to meet with their constituents.
No Labels activists spoke to all 430 current members of the House of Representatives to find that only 176* of them scheduled meetings. The results of the phone survey also reveal that members of both parties share the blame, with about 67% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans stating they had no town hall meetings scheduled for the recess period.
See the list below (at link) to see if your representative is holding a public town hall this month.
...
Holler at your Congressperson and see what's up if they're not holding a town hall. Susan Davis (D) is listed as 'Yes'. I'm and Independent and do not support the Democrat or Republican party, b/c I don't support the liberal-socialist agenda nor the neocon fascist program.
Either way, they're 2 wings of the same bird, controlled by the New World Order, playing a shell game to divide and conquer the population with a false choice. Anyway, I give Susan Davis props for being out in front, although its her duty and I gave her a quick shout out for that through her site. That's fair.Is your representative holding a public town hall meeting this August recess? No... more

Quelle surprise! Bankers and financiers will be sitting pretty when the “Super Committee” decides where spending gets slashed over the next decade.
This just in: The folks at Maplight have released some disturbing numbers on who has been the most generous to the 12 members of the newly-formed Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, fondly known as the “Super Committee.”
http://maplight.org/content/72819
To recap, the Committee was formed by the last-minute debt ceiling increase deal reached by Congress and the Prez earlier this month. It’s comprised of the following Senators:
Pat Toomey (R-Pa.),
Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.),
Rob Portman (R-Ohio),
Patty Murray (D-Wash.),
John Kerry (D-Mass.),
Max Baucus (D-Mont.)
And Representatives:
Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas),
Fred Upton (R-Mich.),
Dave Camp (R-Mich.),
Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.),
Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.),
Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.).
Maplight reports that the 10 biggest organization contributors (this includes PACs and Employees) to Super Committee Members are…
Club for Growth $990,066
Microsoft Corp. $810,100
University of California $629,495
Goldman Sachs $592,684
EMILY’s List $586,835
Citigroup Inc. $561,081
JPMorgan Chase & Co. $494,316
Bank of America $349,566
Skadden, Arps, et al. $347,356
General Electric $340,935
Hmm. Club for Growth, the biggest spender, is a rabid anti-tax and anti-government group boasting 9,000 members and dominated by Wall Street financiers and executives. And then we naturally find the big banks –the Goldmans, the Citigroups — filling out the list. Guess how these folks feel about paying their fair share in taxes?....

According to Glenn Beck, his August 24 rally in Jerusalem may be the fulfillment of biblical prophecy and will open up the "very gates of heaven." Naturally, Beck wants as much congressional support as possible for the rally and has even written to members of Congress pleading with them to lend their support and attend. Now his plans have hit a snag. Members of the House of Representatives are being told that attendance at Beck's event in their official capacity violates House rules.
House members are required by House ethics rules to obtain pre-travel certification for private-sponsored travel from the House ethics committee. And Beck said on his radio show today that House members who made such a request were told that " 'the Glenn Beck event' -- this is a quote -- 'is not something that congressmen should attend in office capacity based on the conflict of interest for him as a member.' Barton’s bill got 233 votes Tuesday, but fell well short of the two-thirds needed to pass under expedited floor rules. Burgess would only need majority support for his amendment.
Only five Democrats voted for Barton’s bill after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi whipped Democrats against the bill. Ten Republicans opposed the measure on the floor.

I don't know why this is even an issue, given the state of affairs in this country. But anyway, the rethuglcans brought this bill to the floor, then voted it down. 4 years ago, they approved this. WTF????

We all know that corporate congressional shills; which include all republicans, are paid to oppose campaign finance reform, in order to insure corporate control of government. But, hear ye, independents and democrats, if democrats ever truly wanted to promote government of the people, for the people and by the people, and rid the legislative process of corporate control and influence, then THEY WOULD HAVE DONE IT ALREADY, when they controlled both the Senate and the House of Representatives!
The fact that Democrats did not address the single most important issue, necessary to balance budgets, reduce the national debt, preserve the principle of democracy and a truly free market, reveals that far too many Democrats are also addicted to the money teat of corporatocracy, and were paid off to not legislate complete campaign finance reform, while they easily could have.
Tom Ferguson speaks with the Real News and profiles how all legislators are dependent upon huge amounts of cash to remain competitive in campaigning, and therefore have great incentive not to reform campaign finance, in: "Politics and the Lords of Money".

Lawrence O'Donnell got into an angry argument with a Republican congressman over the impending government shutdown.
On his Thursday show, O'Donnell and Rep. Tom Graves of Georgia argued about who was to blame for the shutdown, and O'Donnell pressed Graves about the so-called "riders" in the bill that many say are the sticking point between the Democrats and the Republicans.
The "riders" are policy items attached to the overall budget that try to strip funding from certain programs. It is widely believed that it is these riders, not any argument about spending, that are what is holding up a deal between the two parties. Perhaps the key rider concerns the funding of Planned Parenthood.
O'Donnell asked Graves, "Can you vote for a bill that does not completely defund Planned Parenthood?" Graves was cagey, only saying that he wants to vote for a bill that "maximizes the savings for the American people." O'Donnell asked him repeatedly, but Graves would only say that he did not "intend" to vote for a bill that funded Planned Parenthood.
"You are willing to stop payment for the troops in order to stop any funding for Planned Parenthood," O'Donnell said. Graves objected to this, saying that the House had voted to fund the troops only that day. O'Donnell said the measure in question was nothing but a political ploy, not a serious bill.
O'Donnell then asked Graves about a bill that he said would allow the House to pass measures into law without the approval of the Senate, or even the president. O'Donnell called it an "absurdist, unconstitutional cartoon" and asked Graves how he could have voted for it. Graves said he was glad O'Donnell had mentioned the Constitution, because "nowhere in the Constitution does it say, fund Planned Parenthood." This got O'Donnell really mad. "You should be ashamed of yourself," he shouted. "Your insane bill says that the House of Representatives can pass a bill and it becomes law without the signature of the president."

Legislation aimed at helping the United States prosecute WikiLeaks and other sources of leaked information was introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) Tuesday.
"Julian Assange and his associates who have operated and supported WikiLeaks not only damaged US national security with their releases of classified documents, but also placed at risk countless lives, including those of our Nation’s intelligence sources around the world," Rep. King, the chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, said in a statement.
"As international pressure has held back Assange, we now find that his colleagues are planning to spin off a new website called OpenLeaks, dedicated to the same dangerous conduct."
The bill, known as the the SHIELD Act, would amend the Espionage Act to make publishing classified information "concerning the identity of a classified source or informant of an element of the intelligence community" an act of espionage.
Sens. John Ensign (R-NV), Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Scott Brown (R-MA) introduced similar legislation in the Senate last week.
"These organizations are a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States," Rep. King continued. "Julian Assange and his compatriots are enemies of the US and should be prosecuted under the Espionage Act. This legislation provides the Attorney General with additional authority to do just that."
Rep. King sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder in November 2010, demanding that WikiLeaks be deemed a "foreign terrorist organization" and it's founder declared a terror ringleader.
Applying the Espionage Act to third-party publishers of classified information would violate protected speech rights, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) warned in December 2010.
"If the Espionage Act were to be applied to publishers, it would have the unconstitutional effect of infringing on the constitutionally protected speech rights of all Americans, and it would have a particularly negative effect on investigative journalism – a necessary and fundamental part of our democracy," the ACLU said in a statement (.pdf).
"[W]e urge Congress to resist the urge to broaden the Espionage Act's already overbroad proscriptions and, instead, to narrow the Act’s focus to those responsible for leaking properly classified information to the detriment of our national security," the ACLU added. "Publishers who are not involved in the leaking of classified information should be praised by our society for their contributions to public discourse, not vilified as the co-conspirators of leakers with whom they have no criminal connection."
