On April 19th DC-area advocates for Darfur (and 3 buses of advocates from Pittsburgh!) joined over 450 communities across the United States to honor the past and act now for Darfur.
The event began with a moving memorial ceremony honoring the victims of the genocides and mass atrocities commemorated in the month of April, Genocide Prevention Month. Armenia, the Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, South Sudan and Darfur were all remembered through personal stories, prayers and the building of a memorial in front of the White House.

Levittown - Federal officials want to fine a western Pennsylvania chemical company $121,500 for a toxic leak that forced hundreds of residents to evacuate in October.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Indspec Chemical Corp. committed 27 serious safety violations when oleum leaked at its plant in Petrolia, about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. The acid cloud forced 2,500 people _ those within a three-mile radius _ from their homes for a day.
Indspec has 15 business days to comply with or contest Monday's proposed fines. An Indspec official has not returned a call. The plant has 260 workers and makes resorcinol, which is used in tires and rubber products. Oleum is similar to sulfuric acid and is used at the plant.Levittown - Federal officials want to fine a western Pennsylvania chemical company... more

"Braced for Fate" believes that Jews control American media, financial institutions and government and that federal authorities plan to confiscate guns owned lawfully by American citizens.
Those chilling beliefs are revealed in posts on a white supremacist Web site that the Anti-Defamation League says were made by Richard Poplawski, the man who allegedly ambushed and killed three Pittsburgh police officers last week.
The organization, which tracks anti-Semitic activity, says Poplawski posted on the Web site first under the username "Rich P" and more recently under the ominous username "Braced for Fate." In one post, "Braced for Fate" describes the eagle tattoo he sports in a photograph taken from Poplawski's MySpace page before the page was taken down, calling it a "deliberately Americanized version of the [Nazi] Iron Eagle."
The Anti-Defamation League says that other posts match up -- "Braced for Fate's" comments about Wellington, Florida, where Poplawski lived a few years ago, some names and some common links.
"Braced for Fate" is not shy about his beliefs. "ZOG (Zionist-occupied government) is," he wrote in a lengthy post on March 13. "One can read the list of significant persons in government and in major corporations and see who is pulling the strings. One can observe the policies and final products and should walk away with little doubt there is Zionist occupation and -- after some further research & critical thinking -- will discover their insidious intentions."
"Braced for Fate" made just 52 posts, but in a post late last fall, he wrote that he sees himself "probably ramping up the activism in the near future."

Three Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police officers were shot to death while responding to a 911 call of a domestic argument triggered by a urinating dog, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case. The officers were the first department fatalities since 1995, according to the department.
Police said following the shootings Saturday that Richard Poplawski, 22, would be charged with three counts of homicide, aggravated assault and other charges. Poplawski, who was shot in the leg during a four-hour standoff with police, was hospitalized at an undisclosed location, police said.
Details of the incident were included in the police complaint seeking an arrest warrant for Poplawski. The complaint says Margaret Poplawski called 911 about 7 a.m. Saturday to report that her son was "giving her a hard time."
She told police she awoke to discover that "the dog had urinated on the floor," and awakened her son "to confront him about it."
The two had an argument, and Margaret Poplawski told her son she was calling police to remove him from her home, according to the complaint. When officers Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III arrived, she opened the door and let them in.
"Mrs. Poplawski reported that as the officers entered approximately 10 feet into the residence, she heard gunshots, turned and saw her son about six feet away with a long rifle in his hands, at which point she fled downstairs after asking him, 'What the hell have you done?'" the complaint said.
Margaret Poplawski reported she stayed in the basement during the standoff, and heard her son yell, "Yeah, I've been shot," and "I'm standing down, come in and help me," according to the complaint.
The chief said Sciullo was the first to approach the home, and was shot in the head as he entered the doorway. When Mayhle tried to help his fellow officer, he also was shot in the head. Kelly arrived at the scene and was shot before he could aid the other two officers, Harper said. Harper said the suspect fired from a bedroom window, shooting at an armored vehicle carrying a SWAT team -- preventing those officers and medics from reaching the wounded policemen.Three Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police officers were shot to death while responding to... more

I watched this story on my local news station all morning. It became more tragic as time passed and as the local news would often report of more gunshot sounds hailing through the mid morning air. Three officers have been reportedly shot and killed and two are injured although the Pittsburgh Police Dept. have not commented on their injury status. If you happened to watch the events unfold this morning, you could see the massive amount of police forces at the scene in a small quite neighborhood just a few miles out of the downtown area. The officers who were reportedly killed were not able to recieve medical attention due to the gunmans position within his home, posing more danger to paramedics and other officers. The gunmen is reportedly a 23 white male Richard Poplawski who was equipted with two high powered rifles and a pistol. Mayor of Pittsuburgh Luke Ravenstahl also arrived at the scene around 9:00am. It has been reported that the suspect surrendered due to negotiators efforts.
There will be a press conference at local pittsburgh police headquarters at 3:00 pm this afternoon with more solid information.I watched this story on my local news station all morning. It became more tragic as... more

Three police officers were fatally shot and two others wounded after they responded to an early morning domestic dispute call in Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Police Chief Nathan Harper said shortly before noon on Saturday that the gunman, a man in his early 20s, had surrendered, ending a nearly four-hour standoff.
This latest killing spree came less than a day after a gunman killed 13 people in a planned attack at an immigrant services center in Binghamton, N.Y., before killing himself. And the killings came three weeks after four police officers in Oakland, Calif., were fatally shot by a 26-year-old parolee.
The police in Pittsburgh said the gunman was firing shots out of the front window of his ranch house with a high-powered rifle and a pistol.
“Our negotiators finally spoke to him, and he did surrender,” Chief Harper said on CNN around noon Saturday.
