Eccentric actor Tom Cruise has told reporters that he "grew up wanting to kill Hitler", in response to his starring role as a Nazi commandant who attempts to assasinate Hitler in his new movie 'Valkyrie'.
"I always wanted to kill Hitler, I hated him," said the Hollywood star, "as a child studying history and looking at documents, I wondered, why didn't someone stand up and try to stop it? When I read the script, it was entertaining and informative to know what the challenges were and what it was like to be in the environment."Eccentric actor Tom Cruise has told reporters that he "grew up wanting to kill... more

"The original construction plans believed used for a major expansion of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz in 1941 have been found in a Berlin flat, Germany's Bild newspaper reported on Saturday."
It's chilling to think so much energy and planning went into executing over 6 million people, including Jews, Gays, Lesbians, so called gypsies, and others. History has a way of reminding us of the pure insanity that existed. How easy it was for a country to turn against one group of people. I can't help but see parallels in the hatred that currently exists for gays and lesbians in the United States. There are clearly people who would still love to load us on trains and ship us to these camps."The original construction plans believed used for a major expansion of the Nazi... more

WASHINGTON — Federal agents have broken up a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree, the ATF said Monday.
In court records unsealed Monday, federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the school by name.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the two men planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.
The men also sought to go on a national killing spree, with Obama as its final target, Cavanaugh told The Associated Press.
"They said that would be their last, final act _ that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama," Cavanaugh said. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."
An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.
The men, Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark., are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.
Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.
Cowart and Schlesselman are charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.
The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said.

This past few months, over 28 Million DVD's with a message of hate against Muslims was distributed as advertising supplements in Newspapers and in the US mail, mostly in "swing" states (states with no clear polling preference for President).
The purpose of the "Obsession" DVD was to inspire hate against Muslims, instill fear in voters and sway the election (presumably against Barack Obama, who is being "accused" of being Muslim, as if that were a criminal act, and not simply a religious affiliation), and make it easier for people to support more war in the Middle East. While this campaign seems to have had little impact on the Presidential election, we still need to take a stand against hate.

AIPAC LOSES on Resolution (H Con Res 362) that essentially supported a naval blockade of Iran. Resolution shelved. Big victory for antiwar organizations
AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, describes itself as the most important organization affecting the U.S. relationship with Israel. With a budget of $65 million, and membership now standing at over 100,000, it is no wonder that congressional staffers consider it one of the most powerful and effective lobbies on Capitol Hill.
Once a year, AIPAC holds its annual conference in Washington DC. This May it was attended by over 5,000 participants. Its annual policy conference is one of Washington’s largest gatherings of lawmakers, topped only by the President’s State of the Union address. Guests this year included two-thirds of the House, half the Senate, and Vice President Richard Cheney.
Only rarely is a critical word uttered among politicians regarding AIPAC and its associates that support unjust and aggressive (and disastrous) U.S. policies toward the peoples of the Middle East. We aim to change that.
For too long, policies that support Israeli militarism and occupation have gone unchallenged. Political voices raising even minor disagreements with prevailing policies are silenced or subject to campaigns of intimidation. We must open the door to full debate regarding U.S. relationship with Israel and U.S. policy with other countries in the region.
These pages will examine how AIPAC and related institutions (usually collectively known as the "Israel Lobby") support a dangerous status quo, including AIPAC's support for U.S. military aid to Israel, which amounts to over $3 billion per year. We will examine its support for even the worst of Israeli policies, and its support for further U.S. military action in the region.
We will provide resources to counter AIPAC initiatives before Congress, such as the current legislation in Congress to punish the Palestinian people. You will hear many voices and listen to the debate among those who want U.S. policy to change but differ on how influential the "Israel Lobby" really is in formulating that policy.
Most importantly, we will serve as a resource for people organizing actions to challenge the status quo. We believe that changing U.S. policy is really the bottom line. The people of the United States, and the people of the world, deserve better than policies of endless war, occupation, and support for dispossession of the Palestinian people. We the people want a policy based on fairness and mutual respect. Therefore, we welcome the participation of those who want a U.S. foreign policy based on adherence to international law and support for human rights for everyone.

In the beginning, there was a boy, a girl and an apple.
He was a teenager in a death camp in Nazi-controlled Germany. She was a bit younger, living free in the village, her family posing as Christians. Their eyes met through a barbed-wire fence and she wondered what she could do for this handsome young man.
She was carrying apples, and decided to throw one over the fence. He caught it and ran away toward the barracks. And so it began.
As they tell it, they returned the following day and she tossed an apple again. And each day after that, for months, the routine continued. She threw, he caught, and both scurried away.
They never knew one another's name, never uttered a single word, so fearful they'd be spotted by a guard. Until one day he came to the fence and told her he wouldn't be back.
"I won't see you anymore," she said. "Right, right. Don't come around anymore," he answered.
And so their brief and innocent tryst came to an end. Or so they thought.

A British village expecting a scooter and music festival found itself invaded by more than 800 neo-Nazis instead.
Racist skinheads from across Britain, Germany and Eastern Europe arrived draped in swastika flags.
Wearing leather jackets and army boots, they stomped through the streets chanting: “Sieg Heil, Sieg Heil,” a Nazi WWII chant meaning “hail victory.”
Horrified locals watched as the beer and whisky-drinking supremacists urinated over cars and threatened anyone who dared intervene.
Sarah Gooding — who filmed the mob — told how her family fled their cottage in terror.
“It was like a miniature Nuremberg rally,” Gooding, 39, said. “I ran inside, burst into tears and said to my husband, ‘We’ve got to go, I don’t feel safe.’ Our daughters were really, really frightened. They were in tears as we were packing our bag to flee.”
The Bungalow Inn had provided a two-acre field with a marquee for the weekend-long “scooter and music festival” after being contacted by record company ISD.
Bosses were unaware that ISD bills itself as the world’s “oldest and most dependable White Nationalist Movement CD label” — or that the event marked the 15th anniversary of the death of a cult skinhead band’s frontman.
On Wednesday night police inspector Steve Date said: “We are conducting a thorough investigation into a complaint about racist chanting.”A British village expecting a scooter and music festival found itself invaded by more... more

Columbia police have denied a request from a neo-Nazi group to march Nov. 8, saying they do not have the personnel to man both the parade and the University of Missouri home football game against Kansas State University that day.
Steven Boswell of the Missouri chapter of the National Socialist Movement submitted an application for a parade and special event permit Friday to march from Watson Place near MU to the Boone County Courthouse, where his group is proposing to rally from noon to 5 p.m.
The same group held a rally in downtown Columbia on March 12, 2007. It attracted hundreds of onlookers, some of whom reacted with anger to the presence of the dozen or so neo-Nazis who turned out for the procession. More than 50 Columbia police officers were on hand to keep the two groups separated, and police expect a similar show of force will be needed the next time the group marches in Columbia.Columbia police have denied a request from a neo-Nazi group to march Nov. 8, saying... more

On September 11th, 2008, the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, Wofford College, a small liberal arts college in South Carolina that had been segregated up until 1963, paid honor to Vernon Baker. Baker is the only living African-American to have been awarded the World War II Medal of Honor.
For his acts of valor during WWII, Baker had earned the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, The Distinguished Service Cross and The Medal of Honor. However, it took 52 years before those heroics were recognized. Baker, because he was an African-American, was not honored for his bravery until 1997, when he and six of his comrades were finally awarded the Medal of Honor from then-President Bill Clinton at a White House ceremony. Baker was the only member of the group of honorees who was still alive.
Wofford College President Bernie Dunlap presented Vernon Baker with the college's third annual Sandor Teszler Award for Moral Courage and Service to Humankind to a thunderous standing ovation during Wofford's 2008 Opening Convocation Ceremony. Dunlap and Wofford College Dean David Wood also presented Baker, who is now 89-years-old, with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree and Spartanburg's Mayor William Barnet followed by giving Baker a key to the city.

LONDON, England (AP) -- An amateur diplomat alarmed British officials during World War II by proposing that Germany and Britain divide the world between them, according to records released Sunday.
James Lonsdale-Bryans, a fascist sympathizer, traveled to Italy early in the war to meet the German ambassador, Ulrich von Hassell.
"It would appear that Bryans may be taking part in unofficial discussions," said a Secret Service memo released by the National Archives.
"Bryans' idea is that the world ought to be divided into two parts. That Germany should be given a free hand in Europe and that the British Empire should run the rest of the world.
"I am not sure that this is a very desirable point of view to publish at the present time."
The records show that Bryans had been in touch with Britain's Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax, and the Secret Service was unsure how much backing Lonsdale-Bryans may have had from the Foreign Office.
"Bryans is a talkative and indiscreet fellow who is in possession of a story which he delights in telling and which if told publicly would be likely to cause embarrassment to the Foreign Office," one memo said.
Lonsdale-Bryans also tried to discuss his plans with American officials including Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, prompting British officials to tell the Americans that Lonsdale-Bryans was "unreliable though not disloyal."
Despite whatever embarrassment Lonsdale-Bryans may have caused, British officials did not move against him.
"Although there seems to be a good deal to be said for locking him up to prevent him airing his views to all and sundry, I understand that if this is done it will inevitably involve his bringing up the question of his contacts with the Foreign Office and the facilities afforded him to go to Italy," said a letter from an official in the Foreign Office.
Other previously secret records released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that British spies considered using carrier pigeons to spread misinformation among the Germans before the D-Day landings in 1944.
The Secret Service devised a plan to drop pigeons behind enemy lines in France carrying false information about the location of the landings.
The files show that the Allies dropped thousands of homing pigeons into occupied France by parachute during the war, carrying questionnaires to be filled with information that could help the Allied cause. Only 10 percent of the birds returned, leading officials to conclude many had fallen into German hands.
"It occurs to me that this is a possible means of putting deception over to the enemy by the careful framing of the questionnaires, as presumably the Germans must, if they capture some of these birds, take notice of the type of question which is being asked," wrote an official identified as Lt. Col. Robertson in a letter to intelligence staff.
Christopher Andrew, the official historian of the Security Service, said the D-Day pigeon plan was considered but never carried out.

Wofford College, a small classical private (and once highly segregated) Southern college, will confer upon Vernon Baker an honorary doctorate degree in September. Baker and six of his soldier comrades waited 52 years to receive their Medals of Honor that they deserved, but which had been denied after World II because they were African-Americans. By the time they were finally awarded, Mr. Baker was the only one who was still living to accept the Medal of Honor in person.
This very detailed, complex article includes photographs and two gripping videos (with a documentary about Vernon Baker).
I honestly am not concerned about "blogdom popularity" with regard to this piece. But I hope that some of you will care about reading it. On the one hand it's a very complicated article, but at the same time it's also just so deeply touching and heart-wrenching. The multi-faceted thoughts that are evoked by this narrative pierces ever so many of the issues that are tearing many of us apart today: racism, the escalating ravages of wars, the indifference of morally corrupt governmental bureaucracies and more.Wofford College, a small classical private (and once highly segregated) Southern... more
