Peter Tosh, an original member of the Wailers and gifted solo artist, left behind a legacy of political consciousness after his 1987 murder. The estate of the groundbreaking reggae artist announced on Tuesday, Aug. 9, that it will be launching a series of partnerships with Amnesty International and Greenpeace.
A campaign is already underway with Amnesty International, which will give away his solo version 'Get Up Stand Up' (which he co-wrote with Bob Marley) in order to drum up support for Mexican human-rights defender Lydia Cacho. The Cancun-based journalist has received numerous death threats after she exposed a government-backed child-pornography ring, and anyone who signs up to "stand up for Lydia" will receive the free MP3.
In the coming weeks, Tosh's music will also be used in campaigns by Greenpeace International, Students for a Sensible Drug Policy and the Marijuana Policy Project, and will highlight music from his solo albums 'Legalize It' (1976) and 'Equal Rights' (1977). The SSDP is hosting a video contest in which people can submit a PSA on the them of "What 'Legalize It' Means to Me," in support of the first-ever marijuana legalization bill in Congress. The winner will have their video featured in the effort and receive a "Legacy Edition" of 'Legalize It.'

Jan Beranek, who is with a team of Greenpeace activists investigating the fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, says Japanese are encouraged to return to their normal lives unaware of the dangers they face in the contaminated area. "I personally find it very disturbing, because on the one hand you see the Japanese authorities forcing people and society to get back to normal... And yet at the same time there are still extremely high levels of radiation and the contamination of the soil, and also potentially in the food," the activist told RT. "This is just unbelievable because at those levels of exposure it certainly poses a risk to the lives and health of the people. If you draw a parallel to the Chernobyl disaster, then actually the Soviets decided to evacuate everyone living in the place, where radiation was three or four times lower than what we see in Fukushima City today," added Beranek, who personally visited the Chernobyl area after the 1986 disaster. Greenpeace is putting pressure on the Japanese government to gather and provide more information about the contamination in addition to doing its independent effort, Beranek said. "We've actually forced the government to, for example, extend the monitoring of the sea. And we also hear that the government is now revising at least some of the protective measures for children, which is definitely good to see. Yet the government is too slow and doing too little actually [compared to] what the situation would deserve," he said. The activist hopes the consequences of the Fukushima disaster will make Japan and other nations change their stance on nuclear energy and phase it out. There is such change already in Germany, Italy and Switzerland. "Nuclear power, as we have seen, is inherently unsafe. There is always an unpredictable combination of natural catastrophe, technological failure, human error that can result in a situation when a reactor gets out of control very fast. It's a question of a few hours before full meltdown happens. It's unsafe to take the bets and continue with nuclear power," Beranek believes.Jan Beranek, who is with a team of Greenpeace activists investigating the fallout from... more

Judge rules polar bears still 'threatened'
June 30, 2011 | 3:51 pm
Polar A U.S. District Court on Thursday upheld a Bush-era decision that polar bears are a threatened species, despite challenges by the state of Alaska and others seeking to strip the bear of its protection.
Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to protect the bear because of the melting of the Arctic sea ice was well supported and that opponents failed to demonstrate that the listing was irrational.
“Plaintiffs’ challenges amount to nothing more than competing views about policy and science,” Judge Emmet Sullivan wrote.
The polar bear was the first species added to the Endangered Species List solely because of the threat from global warming.
The status of polar bears became an issue in 2005 after the Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace filed a petition arguing that shrinking ice impaired the bears' ability to catch prey and could lead to their extinction. In December 2006, then-Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne declared the bears "threatened," rather than endangered and in imminent danger of extinction. Endangered and threatened species receive the same protections, such as protection of critical habitats, population recovery assistance and prohibition of harm to the species or its habitat. For threatened species, however, the government can reduce protections or allow exemptions.
If the bears were listed as endangered, new power plants could be blocked, as well as other sources of carbon dioxide and other gases that contribute to global warming. It also could make petroleum exploration more difficult.
As a result, Kempthorne created a "special rule" stating that the Act would not be used to set climate policy or limit greenhouse gas emissions, pesticides, mercury and other pollutants outside of the Arctic that harm the bear. The Obama administration upheld this policy.
The state of Alaska and hunting groups argued that the listing was unnecessary because the bear is protected by other laws.
“With the population of the species in decline, the needless hunting of them for sport must not be an option,” said Jeffrey Flocken, D.C. Office Director, International Fund for Animal Welfare. “As pro-trophy hunting organizations continue the fight to skirt existing laws and import polar bear trophies, today’s decision serves to reinforce the fact that the species is in jeopardy. The short-term special interests of hunting groups must never take precedence over long-term conservation efforts for the protection of polar bears.”
Currently, conservation groups are challenging Kempthorne's special rule in court.
“This decision is an important affirmation that the science demonstrating that global warming is pushing the polar bear toward extinction simply cannot be denied,” said Kassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute. “While we are disappointed that the polar bear will not receive the more protective endangered status it deserves, maintaining Endangered Species Act listing for the polar bear is a critical part of giving this species back its future.”
Studies show that rising temperatures are quickly melting the Arctic sea ice, forcing polar bears inland. In September 2007, scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey released a comprehensive nine-volume analysis of the science and reached a dire forecast: Two-thirds of the bear's habitat would disappear by 2050.
Polar bears are experts at hunting ringed seals and other prey on sea ice. But they are so unsuccessful on land that they spend their summers fasting, losing more than 2 pounds a day. Overall, scientists believe the global population of 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears remains robust. But virtually all polar bear experts predict rapid population declines in the Arctic, which is warming faster than anyplace else in the world, changing too rapidly for the bears to adapt and find another source of food.

Greenpeace UK has launched a new campaign against Volkswagen, parodying its famous “The Force” Superbowl with the mini Darth Vader trying to start a car using the force.
But why Volkswagen I hear you say - is that not the oh so cool car company that sponsor cinema and art and who seem so ...green?
Little did we know that Volkswagen, Europe's largest car maker, has been exaggerating its green record and resisting attempts to make popular models such as the market-leading Golf more fuel efficient.
According to the 24-page Greenpeace report, The Dark Side of Volkswagen, the German carmaker puts its most efficient engines in only 6 per cent of its cars and inflates their price by more than their cost, deterring the wider adoption of greener cars.
Greenpeace claims that despite having an image as a family friendly, green brand, VW Group has made less progress on fuel efficiency than rivals such as BMW and Toyota and is actively seeking to thwart EU plans to reduce climate-change emissions by 2020.Greenpeace UK has launched a new campaign against Volkswagen, parodying its famous... more

Greenpeace USA has launched a quirky campaign that may well be successful in getting toy-maker Mattel to stop using some rainforest fibers in their packaging - including for Barbie and Ken dolls - that come from Indonesian tropical deforestation and threaten tiger habitat. Yet problematically their latest rainforest market campaign - similar to Rainforest Action Network's Girl Scout and Disney campaigns - mistakenly suggest that Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification of primary rainforest logging is an acceptable alternative source for rainforest timber and fiber for throw-away consumption.
Greenpeace is a founding member of FSC (and chairman of the board for 6 years) which two studies have shown destroy from 120-130,000,000 hectares (~320,000,000 acres) of primary rainforest and other old forests by certifying their first time industrial logging as being "sustainable" and "well-managed" - when by definition FSC greenwashes primary rainforest destruction. An estimated 60-70% of FSC certified products come from primary and old growth logging - two times the area of Texas - including vast stretches of Canada's ancient boreal forests being clearcut with Greenpeace's vocal support for toilet paper.

Barbie has a nasty deforestation habit - she is trashing rainforests in Indonesia, including areas that are home to some of the last tiger, orang-utans and elephants, just so she can wrap herself in pretty packaging.
Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbie, is feeding this nasty habit by using paper packaging for the world's most famous toy from Indonesia's most notorious rainforest destroyer Asia Pulp and Paper (APP).
Critical wildlife habitat and carbon-rich rainforests and peatlands are being wrecked for cheap, throw-away toy packaging.
Creating the future of play, shouldn't mean no future for rainforests.
Tell Mattel to stop destroying rainforests for toy packaging.

An Arctic oil rig was forced to stop drilling by environmental activists demanding to know how its owner would respond to an oil leak on the scale of last year's Deepwater Horizon spill.
Edinburgh-based Cairn Energy said drilling was suspended at its Leiv Eiriksson rig off the coast of Greenland after 18 Greenpeace protesters breached a restricted area. The activists launched from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza in five inflatable speedboats from outside a 500m exclusion zone set up by Danish authorities.
Campaigner Ben Ayliffe said: "Cairn Energy is hiding its oil spill response plan, so we're going to the one place where there must be a copy of it. It's obvious why Cairn won't tell the world how it would clean up a BP-style oil spill here in the Arctic, and that's because it can't be done.
"Experts say the freezing temperatures and remote location mean a deep water blow-out in this stunning pristine environment would be an irreversible disaster. If they published the plan, the dangers of investing in such a high-risk venture would be laid bare. We have to draw a line in the ice and stop the Arctic oil rush."
Cairn announced this week that it had begun drilling in two wells in the region. The two wells are approximately 160km and 300km off Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Each drilling operation is in water deeper than 900m.
Last week, two Greenpeace protesters occupied the company's 53,000-tonne drilling vessel. They hung from the underside of the rig in an Arctic survival pod and had enough supplies to keep them there for 10 days, but were removed by Danish police.
Cairn has asked a court in the Netherlands to legally prevent Greenpeace from disrupting any future deep-sea drilling operations.
In a statement, the company said: "Cairn confirms that members of Greenpeace have boarded the semi-submersible drilling vessel, the Leiv Eiriksson, owned by Ocean Rig. The protesters have breached the safety exclusion zone and entered a restricted area on the rig. In accordance with the strict health and safety practices employed in this drilling programme and in order to ensure safe operating conditions, drilling has been suspended.
"Cairn respects the rights of individuals and organisations to express their views in a safe and peaceful manner, but would be concerned with any action that presents a risk to the safety of people and/or equipment."
The company added: "Wherever it is active, Cairn operates in a safe and prudent manner. The Greenland Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum has established some of the most stringent operating regulations anywhere globally, which mirror those applied in the Norwegian North Sea. Cairn takes its responsibilities such as oil spill contingency and response plans very seriously.
"Cairn, working closely with the Greenland authorities, has developed an extensive emergency response and oil spill response plan. As stipulated by Greenland Authorities, the oil spill response documents are not publicly available."An Arctic oil rig was forced to stop drilling by environmental activists demanding to... more
