The "If Americans Knew" web site also publishes and keeps current shocking information on the daily toll in the OPT. Some of its disturbing figures affecting Palestinians from September 29, 2000 (the first day of the Second Intifada) to the present at the hands of Israeli forces are as follows:
-- 934 Palestinian children have been killed in most cases while engaging in normal daily activities like going to school, playing, shopping, or being in their homes. PCHR reports a total of 4284 Palestinian deaths through March 23, 2007.
-- A known total of 31,307 Palestinians have been injured, mostly civilians, and mostly under the same circumstances children were killed. The B'Tselem Israeli Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories reports these numbers are extremely conservative while the internationally respected Palestine Red Crescent Society reports much higher totals that are likely more accurate. In addition, these figures exclude large numbers of Palestinians who die when unable to reach medical care in time because of Israeli checkpoints, road closures, curfews and other restrictions on mobility in the OPT. Also, no accurate records are available on the large number of avoidable Palestinian deaths resulting from deprivation and/or disease following the first time ever imposition of sanctions on an occupied people from early 2006 to the present.
-- The cite reports US financial aid to Israel is $7,023,288 per day, but the true number is far higher including:
- around $3 billion or more annually in direct aid;
- billions more in loans as needed;
- millions annually for immigrant resettlement;
- multi-billions in waved loan repayments;
- billions more in military aid, financial help to develop Israel's defense industry, transfer of state-of-the-art technology and the latest US weapons, and US guarantees for Israel's access to oil;
- $22 billion Israel got over the past 50 years through the sale of its below-market paying bonds that have financed half its development - meaning the colonization of annexed Palestinian land; military aid for its imperial aggressive wars; and still more as needed and requested.
Tiny Israel today (with six million Jews) gets more US financial aid (in all direct and indirect forms) than all other countries in the world combined.

Palestinians Beware
24 April 2009
Mitri I. Musleh - Israel’s new demand for being recognized as a Jewish state by the Palestinians as a precondition for peace between the two people is ambiguous, confusing and is totally a time wasting mechanism. Israel’s current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu advised US senior envoy, George Mitchell, that Palestinians must recognize Israel as a “Jewish State” before peace talks can begin. Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted a senior official in Netanyahu’s office as saying that “Israel expects the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state before talking about two states for two peoples”.
I am absolutely and totally confused. For all of those years since 1948 where the UN recognized Israel as a Jewish state, the illegal Israeli military occupation of Palestine, the endless number of war casualties on both sides, the creation of the largest contingent number of Palestinian refugees, the ongoing US yearly financial and military aid to Israel, all the international efforts deployed to establish peace between the two nations and all the current Israeli leaders wish for is for Israel to be recognized as a Jewish state by the Palestinians.
What ever happened to Israel’s demand for security? Has the new Israeli government achieved security for its people?The "If Americans Knew" web site also publishes and keeps current shocking... more

The late Edward Said explained his title in what he wrote: "The extermination of the Native Americans can be admitted, the morality of Hiroshima attacked, the national flag (of the US) publicly committed to flames. But the systematic continuity of Israel's 52-year oppression and maltreatment of the Palestinians is virtually unmentionable, a narrative that has no permission to appear." It appeared boldly and courageously in Pilger's book, and it's long past time for it be prominent in the mainstream as well to finally expose Israeli crimes and demand they end. It's especially important now as Israel just began an intensive military assault against the defenseless people of Gaza, which, before it ends, may result in many deaths, great destruction of property and an overwhelming humanitarian disaster even beyond the one already existing in The Occupied Territories.
Few people anywhere have suffered more or longer than the beleaguered Palestinians. For nearly four decades they've lived under a harsh and unending Israeli occupation of their land. They've endured a continued assault to seize it, a loss of their personal and economic rights and a denial of any chance for justice or their very humanity. These courageous people remain isolated in their own land with little support from the outside. Yet it's never broken their spirit as they continue their heroic efforts to survive and struggle to gain their freedom.The late Edward Said explained his title in what he wrote: "The extermination of... more

Pope Benedict announced that he would visit the Holy Land this May to pray "for the precious gift of unity and peace for the Middle East and for all of humanity," but he would not be going to Gaza. On Thursday, President Obama stood up to intense pressure from rightwingers by releasing four of the infamous "torture memos." This is an enormous victory for those of us who worked so hard to elect President Obama, while also working tirelessly to defend the Constitution against the crimes of Bush and Cheney.
Unfortunately, President Obama also said he would not prosecute CIA agents who engaged in torture, simply because George Bush's lawyers told them it was "legal." President Obama also said Attorney General Eric Holder would use taxpayer dollars to defend torturers against lawsuits by torture victims, and to pay all judgments if they lost.
Tell Congress: No Amnesty for Torturers
http://www.democrats.com/no-amnesty-for-torturers?cid=ZGVtczIyODkyMWRlbXM=
These decisions are intolerable and unacceptable. Torture is utterly immoral and un-American. It produced absolutely no useful intelligence. It recruited terrorists responsible for at least half the U.S. deaths in Iraq. And it endangered every U.S. soldier who may be captured in the future.
And torture is absolutely illegal. The U.S. ratified the United Nations Convention Against Torture, which prohibits torture and requires prosecution of torturers. In 1947, the U.S. prosecuted a Japanese officer for waterboarding. No lawyer can "legalize" what is illegal.
Congress must take the following actions:
1. Demand the appointment of a Special Prosecutor by Attorney General Eric Holder for torture, warrantless wiretapping, and other heinous crimes of the Bush Administration. (Thanks to Rep. Jerrold Nadler for leading the way !)
2. Prohibit the use of any taxpayer dollars to defend government officials who committed such crimes against lawsuits, or to pay for judgments against them.
3. Impeach Judge Jay Bybee, the torture memo author who serves on the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in California.
4. Protect human rights by restoring Habeas Corpus and the Fourth Amendment (search and seizure), including repeal of the Orwellian-named Protect America Act, U.S.A. Patriot Act, the FISA Amendments, and Military Commissions Act.
5. End secret government by prohibiting use of "State Secrets," "Sovereign Immunity" and "Signing Statements."

New Delivery Of Weapons Reach Israel - Will Obama Stop Now Assisting To Murder Palestinians?
The new delivery to Israel of a massive consignment of US munitions, revealed by Amnesty International today, throws into question whether President Obama will act to prevent the US fuelling further Israeli attacks against civilians that may amount to war crimes, as was perpetrated in Gaza.According to new information received by Amnesty International, the Wehr Elbe, a German cargo ship which had been chartered and controlled by US Military Sealift Command, docked and unloaded its cargo of reportedly over 300 containers at the Israeli port of Ashdod, just 40 km north of Gaza by road. The German ship left the USA for Israel on 20 December, one week before the start of Israeli attacks on Gaza, carrying 989 containers of munitions, each of them 20 feet long with a total estimated net weight of 14,000 tons...

Can Spain Really Prosecute George W. Bush Aides Over Torture?
By Johanna Neuman
Spain argues that it has jurisdiction in the case because five Spanish prisoners at Guantanamo Bay allege they were tortured. And human rights organizations in the United States agree.
===================================================

Spanish prosecutors will seek criminal charges against Alberto Gonzales and five high-ranking Bush administration officials for sanctioning torture at Guantánamo.
=========================================
April 15, 2009 "LA Times" -- The White House has discouraged any talk of prosecuting George W. Bush or any of his aides over the torture of terrorism suspects -- which President Obama has now outlawed. The new president says he just wants to move on from the policies of the old one.
But not everyone agrees. Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont has called for a Truth Commission, modeled on South Africa's transition from apartheid, to explore who was responsible for sending the United States down the path of torture. And now a court in Spain is weighing an investigation into whether Bush administration officials violated the Geneva Convention in authorizing waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques used with terrorism suspects after 9/11.

Spanish prosecutors will seek criminal charges against Alberto Gonzales and five high-ranking Bush administration officials for sanctioning torture at Guantánamo.
Spanish prosecutors have decided to press forward with a criminal investigation targeting former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and five top associates over their role in the torture of five Spanish citizens held at Guantánamo, several reliable sources close to the investigation have told The Daily Beast. Their decision is expected to be announced on Tuesday before the Spanish central criminal court, the Audencia Nacional, in Madrid. But the decision is likely to raise concerns with the human-rights community on other points: They will seek to have the case referred to a different judge.Can Spain Really Prosecute George W. How Can You Trust The Cowardly BBC?
The BBC Trust is now a mouthpiece for the Israeli lobby which abused Bowen
By Robert Fisk
The BBC Trust's report on Jeremy Bowen's dispatches from the Middle East is pusillanimous, cowardly, outrageous, factually wrong and ethically dishonest.
============================= The BBC Trust's report on Jeremy Bowen's dispatches from the Middle East is pusillanimous, cowardly, outrageous, factually wrong and ethically dishonest.
But I am mincing my words.
The trust – how I love that word which so dishonours everything about the BBC – has collapsed, in the most shameful way, against the usual Israeli lobbyists who have claimed – against all the facts – that Bowen was wrong to tell the truth.
Let's go step by step through this pitiful business. Zionism does indeed instinctively "push out" the frontier. The new Israeli wall – longer and taller than the Berlin Wall although the BBC management cowards still insist its reporters call it a "security barrier" (the translation of the East German phrase for the Berlin Wall) – has gobbled up another 10 per cent of the 22 per cent of "Palestine" that Arafat/Mahmoud Abbas were supposed to negotiate. Bowen's own brilliant book on the 1967 war, Six Days, makes this land-grab perfectly clear.
Anyone who has read the history of Zionism will be aware that its aim was to dispossess the Arabs and take over Palestine. Why else are Zionists continuing to steal Arab land for Jews, and Jews only, against all international law? Who for a moment can contradict that this defies everyone's interpretation of international law except its own?
Even when the International Court in The Hague stated that the Israeli wall was illegal – the BBC, at this point, was calling it a "fence"! – Israel simply claimed that the court was wrong.
UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 called upon Israel to withdraw its forces from territories that it occupied in the 1967 war – and it refused to do so. The Americans stated for more than 30 years that Israel's actions were illegal – until the gutless George Bush accepted Israel had the right to keep these illegally held territories. Thus the BBC Trust – how cruel that word "trust" now becomes – has gone along with the Bush definition of Israel's new boundaries (inside Arab land, of course).
The BBC's preposterous committee claims that Bowen's article "breached the rules [sic] on impartiality" because "readers might come away from the article thinking that the interpretation offered was the only sensible view of the war".How Can You Trust The Cowardly BBC?

Dennis Ross's Iran Plan
By Robert Dreyfuss
Diplomats and Middle East watchers hoping Ross would be sidelined are wrong. He is building an empire at the State Department: hiring staff and, with his legendary flair for bureaucratic wrangling, cementing liaisons with a wide range of US officials. The Iran portfolio is his, says an insider.
=================================
When Dennis Ross, a hawkish, pro-Israel adviser to Barack Obama's presidential campaign, was elevated in February to the post of special adviser on "the Gulf and Southwest Asia"--i.e., Iran--Ross's critics hoped that his influence would be marginal. After all, unlike special envoys George Mitchell (Israel-Palestine) and Richard Holbrooke (Afghanistan-Pakistan), whose appointments were announced with fanfare, Ross's appointment was long delayed and then announced quietly, at night, in a press release.
But diplomats and Middle East watchers hoping Ross would be sidelined are wrong. He is building an empire at the State Department: hiring staff and, with his legendary flair for bureaucratic wrangling, cementing liaisons with a wide range of US officials. The Iran portfolio is his, says an insider. "Everything we've seen indicates that Ross has completely taken over the issue," says a key Iran specialist. "He's acting as if he's the guy. Wherever you go at State, they tell you, 'You've gotta go through Dennis.'"
It's paradoxical that Obama, who made opening a dialogue with Iran into a crucial plank in his campaign, would hand the Iran file to Ross. Since taking office, Obama has taken a number of important steps to open lines to Iran, including a remarkable holiday greeting by video in which the president spoke directly to "the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran," adding, "We seek engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect." He invited Iran to attend an international conference on Afghanistan, where a top Iranian diplomat shook hands with Holbrooke; he's allowing American diplomats to engage their Iranian counterparts; and he's reportedly planning to dispatch a letter directly to Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Yet Ross, like his neoconservative co-thinkers, is explicitly skeptical about the usefulness of diplomacy with Iran.Dennis Ross's Iran Plan

America's Imperial Wars: We Need to See the Horrors
By Dave Lindorff
We may read the cold fact that the US military, after initial denials, admits that its forces killed not four enemy combatants in an assault on a house in Afghanistan, but rather five civilians-including a man, a female teacher, a 10-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a tiny baby. But we don't see pictures of their shattered bodies, no doubt shredded by the high-powered automatic rifles typically used by American forces.
===========================
When I was a 17-year-old kid in my senior year of high school, I didn't think much about Vietnam. It was 1967, the war was raging, but I didn't personally know anyone who was over there, Tet hadn't happened yet. If anything, the excitement of jungle warfare attracted my interest more than anything (I had a .22 cal rifle, and liked to go off in the woods and shoot at things, often, I'll admit, imagining it was an armed enemy.)
But then I had to do a major project in my humanities program and I chose the Vietnam War. As I started researching this paper, which was supposed to be a multi-media presentation, I ran across a series of photos of civilian victims of American napalm bombing. These victims, often, were women and children-even babies.
The project opened my eyes to something that had never occurred to me: my country's army was killing civilians. And it wasn't just killing them. It was killing them, and maiming them, in ways that were almost unimaginable in their horror: napalm, phosphorus, anti-personnel bombs that threw out spinning flechettes that ripped through the flesh like tiny buzz saws. I learned that scientists like what I at the time wanted to become were actually working on projects to make these weapons even more lethal, for example trying to make napalm more sticky so it would burn longer on exposed flesh.
By the time I had finished my project, I had actively joined the anti-war movement, and later that year, when I turned 18 and had to register for the draft, I made the decision that no way was I going to allow myself to participate in that war.
A key reason my-and millions of other Americans'--eyes were opened to what the US was up to in Indochina was that the media at that time, at least by 1967, had begun to show Americans the reality of that war. I didn't have to look too hard to find the photos of napalm victims, or to read about the true nature of theAmerica's Imperial Wars: We Need to See the Horrors

The Red Cross Torture Report: What it Means
By Mark Danner
For many in the United States, torture still stands as a marker of political commitment-of a willingness to "do anything to protect the American people," a manly readiness to know when to abstain from "coddling terrorists" and do what needs to be done. Torture's powerful symbolic role, like many ugly, shameful facts, is left unacknowledged and undiscussed. But that doesn't make it any less real. On the contrary.
====================
When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry…. These are evil people. And we’re not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.
If it hadn’t been for what we did—with respect to the…enhanced interrogation techniques for high-value detainees…—then we would have been attacked again. Those policies we put in place, in my opinion, were absolutely crucial to getting us through the last seven-plus years without a major-casualty attack on the US….

We Must Confront the Torturers who Acted in Our Name
By Robyn Blumner
Let's see, a U.S. court successfully convicted the son of the brutal former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, of torturing his father's political opponents. But we're going to leave it to a Spanish judge to go after our own Torquemadas? -- Let's see, a U.S. court successfully convicted the son of the brutal former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, of torturing his father's political opponents. But we're going to leave it to a Spanish judge to go after our own Torquemadas?
======================================
A Spanish court has targeted former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as well former Justice Department lawyers John Yoo and Jay Bybee -- who is now a federal appellate judge -- along with three other administration lawyers, in an investigation into the torture of five Spanish residents who were prisoners at Guantanamo.
But this is our job, not Spain's. This is our unfinished business. The Bush administration's Torture Nation should not be shielded by President Obama's desire to move forward. Our current president, who used as an applause line during his European tour how we've now "prohibited -- without exception or equivocation -- any use of torture," has some mopping up to do.
It takes no more convincing than reading the sickening descriptions of what we did to the 14 so-called high-value detainees in the leaked report of the International Committee of the Red Cross. (You can view the report here: http://www.nybooks.com/icrc-report.pdf ) But it should be remembered that we inflicted these brutalities -- beatings, exposure to frigid temperatures, being shackled with arms overhead or shoehorned into tiny boxes, being denied sleep and kept naked -- on hundreds of others, many of whom were never a threat and have since been released. That is, if they weren't among the 108 detainees who died in our hands, a figure offered last year by Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Colin Powell.
A full accounting of what we did and upon whose orders is essential for a number of reasons. First, by refusing to keep the Bush era's dirty little secrets, Obama fulfills his commitment to transparency in government. Second, doing so will vet the claims of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who continues to say that abusive interrogations were effective, when others equally knowledgeable say they were counterproductive. And third, it is a moral imperative, necessary for us to regain our posture as an international standard bearer.
As Sen. Patrick Leahy said in proposing a nonpartisan truth commission (an idea that went nowhere), "We cannot turn the page until we have read the page."
One place for the Obama administration to start is in the release of threWe Must Confront the Torturers who Acted in Our Name

Somalia
You Are Being Lied to About Pirates
By Johann Hari
In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas. .............
===============================
Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."
At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia's unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."Somalia

My name is Anna. I am Irish. Yes I have lived in the Middle East in the past (17 plus years), and have visited Israel 200 times, possibly more often.
I have had the latest questionnaire from a rather polite man in Jerusalem, but he's sadly misinformed. So...LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.
In the last months I have had strange messages...........some initially were bullying (during Gaza War) in an effort to silence me. Then there were those that wanted to be friendly, but two people have written long messages to me and they definitely deserve the courtesy of a reply. So lets set the record straight as such directness and honesty deserves a direct and honest reply.
During the week one asked me :
"........... the future generation has come back to say this is our land and the powers that be in the world recognize it. while i have you here im dying to know why do you hate us so much?i genuinly honestly dont understand it and desperately wish to."
MY RESPONSE:
I understand you were told a lot of lies growing up (as your post indicates) but as an adult I expect you to listen and read to learn the truth about how and why Israel exists. Clearly you are blinkered and want to believe you are the "chosen" race, which is about as factual as a little girl wanting to believe she is a princess because Daddy told her so.
You ask why I hate you...........I hate nobody and want peace in the region.
I speak out against wrong.
I speak out against murder.
I speak out against thieves.
I speak out against liars.
I speak out against people who kill little children and women.
I speak out against people who obstruct FREEDOM OF SPEECH and control the media.
I speak out against people who obstruct journalists reporting the facts (locked out of Gaza Strip during latest war/genocide).
I speak out against people who manipulate Congress and the White House shamelessly.
I speak out against people who starve a Palestinian population and cut off water and electricity, which was shameful, and since 2006 has caused them untold hardship.
I speak out against those who condone killing aid workers.
I speak out against shooting and dropping bombs on innocent victims.
I speak out against people who drop WHITE PHOSPHOROUS to burn the flesh of innocent victims in the way SADDAM HUSSEIN used mustard gas to kill Kurds and Iranians.
I speak out against people who commit GENOCIDE.
I THEREFORE SPEAK AGAINST ISRAEL.
I SPEAK AGAINST ISRAEL REPEATEDLY.....I also speak against RAWANDA.
I WANT THE WORLD TO SEE ISRAEL FOR WHAT IT IS despite all the Jewish owned MEDIA CORPORATIONS in the world portraying Israel as the victim.
Only when the world bands together and calls HALT to Israel's expansionism can we have peace.
Personally I don't think anyone has a right to take Palestinian land and give it away. Would Britain have a right to take Mexico and give it to the United States? No. Neither did they have a right to give Palestinian land to Jews. As for the Bible..........it's like Eve giving Adam an apple. Do you believe that is what happened? Forget the land of Canaan stuff..........and move on..........fact is you displaced the Palestinians and you don't want them to stay....you want them to run away for Israel to expand.....you even say so in your message to me.......re read it.
Reporters are told by their editors to use the word "targeted killing" when Israel murders. Gaza was called a "war"....................it strikes me as not much of a war................a few rockets made with agricultural fertilizer against the most advanced military hardware in the world................it's a joke to call it a "war". Were babies and children called "combatants"..................er, perhaps throwing their bottles and soothing rings as missiles?
