Santogold at Sydney Festival 2009 College Street Stage

As many of us who have seen the pod of Santogold featuring Artist/DJ Diplo on Current TV or the website, we know she knows how to get down. Innovative, provocative, and truly unique, Santogold is one of the biggest artists to emerge in recent times. It’s not too often that artists surrounded by big hype can live up to the expectations. In the case of Santogold aka Santi White, this couldn’t be more true. Her music delves effortlessly into dub, hip hop and soul whilst still paying homage to her punk-rock roots. The impressive result is a kaleidoscope of organic and synthetic sounds held together by her attitude-filled performance.

Sydney Festival Background:

For three weeks each January the Festival offers a rich program of around 80 events involving upwards of 500 artists from Australia and abroad covering dance, theatre, music, visual arts, cross media and forums. The first Festival took place in 1977 and it has since grown to become one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern, popular and intelligent programming. In many ways it is probably still best understood as a celebration of Sydney and its style and energy reflect the confidence, diversity and vigour of one of the world's most beautiful cities.

Santogold, along with other artists, was featured on Festival First Night during the Sydney Festival 2009. Festival First Night returned for its second year on January 10, 2009 with an epic, outdoor celebration to mark the opening of the 2009 Festival. Not to mention this was an opportunity to catch some of the biggest names in the Festival for F-R-E-E.

With the streets again cleared of cars, over 600 major local and international musicians, dancers and artists from around the globe exploded onto open-air stages across the CBD.
