Did Arcade Fire save "Where the Wild Things Are" from totally bombing at the box office on opening weekend? That's the question asked in this LA Times piece about the movie's marketing campaign. (Current.com user PaulTheFifth gets to stay up as late as he wants for finding this piece!)
A pop music connoisseur and longtime music-video director, Jonze had brought the studio a CD full of music he thought captured "Wild Things' " sensibility. The Warners marketing staff fell in love with "Wake Up," a song by Arcade Fire. A friend of the band, Jonze helped persuade the group to allow the studio to use the song in its advertising. The new trailer spared us any of the film's nattering dialogue, simply melding Jonze's striking visual images to the song's uplifting melodies.
The trailer was a Web sensation, being passed virally around from one Arcade Fire fan to another. Warners also signaled its intent to go after a more diverse audience by putting the trailer up in front of a wide range of films, including "Land of the Lost," "Public Enemies" and "I Love You, Beth Cooper." The Arcade Fire trailer turned the film's image around, wiping away all the negative vibes with its vivid emotional appeal.
Ever since its appearance, Warners found that the film had a far more receptive audience, as this weekend's surprisingly strong opening has proven. "For the first time, we were able to convey to people in an emotional and articulate way what this movie was supposed to be," says Kroll. "It really helped reinvent the movie for a lot of people. So we're feeling really proud of taking a film that may not have been immediately accessible, but finding a way to make it work."

And then tune into Current Music Presents: Embedded this Wednesday, October 21, at 11/10c to watch a very special impromptu performance of "Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire. It's drawn from a new partnership with our awesome French friends at La Blogotheque.

Since coming onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino has established himself not only as a brilliant director, but as an artist with an ear for music. Any Tarantino soundtrack is an event unto itself, whether for the soulful Jackie Brown, uber-cool Pulp Fiction or frenetic Kill Bill.
Following in that tradition, Warner Bros. is poised to release the soundtrack to QT's latest, the war/revenge tale Inglourious Basterds. The soundtrack will feature rare and previously unreleased tracks and is scheduled to hit stores on August 18th.Since coming onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino has established... more

If the news that a Palahniuk film is on the way wasn't enough to make you happy, wait to hear who's in charge of the soundtrack.
http://current.com/items/89130717_forthcoming_film_from_author_of_fight_club
"Speaking to BBC 6 Music on the Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show, Palahniuk explained it all came from his love of the band’s music, saying: 'Clark Gregg, who directed the movie version of Choke which comes out on September 26 (in the US), he knew that I’d written Choke while listening to Radiohead’s Pablo Honey, with Creep, over and over and over. So Clark got Radiohead to contribute a song; to write a song for the very end of the movie, the final credits. Apparently Radiohead liked the movie so much, they’ve written the score, most of the ambient music throughout it. So it’s Choke – with the music of Radiohead."

Doveman, aka Thomas Bartlett, has made a cover of the Footloose album in its entirety. But it won't have you kicking off your blue suede shoes. It's a hushed take on the 80s soundtrack inspired by quite a sad story. Bartlett's friend lost his sister about 20 years ago and he only knew her by her possessions. He was going through her things and found her Footloose tape. So he gave the lyrics to Bartlett (who had never heard any of the songs, apparently) and had him re-interpret the entire soundtrack to help him deal with his grief. What the two created is a masterpiece, in my opinion. You'll never listen to these songs the same way again.Doveman, aka Thomas Bartlett, has made a cover of the Footloose album in its entirety.... more

The movie was awesome enough, but the sound track just made it even more awesomer (I know that is not a word).
The soundtrack got a little boost also because of the movies 4 Academy Award nominations last week.
Further, this is the first time a release from 30-year-old label Rhino Records has hit Number One.
Score for the little guys. The movie was awesome enough, but the sound track just made it even more awesomer (I... more

There's already Oscar buzz circulating around Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe for their roles in "American Gangster." But those involved with the movie are hoping that talk extends to the music in the film as well.
The 1960s and '70s-era soul music featured in the movie, out on Friday, is its invisible character, says Kathy Nelson, president of film music for Universal Pictures, who helped put together the music for "American Gangster."
Some of the songs are classics, like Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming." But because licensing music can be expensive, Nelson told The Associated Press they had to be creative at times. There's already Oscar buzz circulating around Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe... more

3. The Harder They Come
4. Pulp Fiction
5. The Graduate
(follow the link for the rest of the Top 10)
"The Vanity Fair editors said the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was a flawless combination of 'funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s.'"
What's your favorite soundtrack? Also, is the greatness of a soundtrack determined based on the music alone or the role the music plays in a film? Personally, I say the latter. The Top 5:
