The Buena Vista and Irish Coffee have become an icon of San Francisco history. While Irish Coffee originated in Ireland, it was refined to perfection at the Buena Vista on the Wharf which is still the best place to sit and enjoy a glass looking out over the bay.The Buena Vista and Irish Coffee have become an icon of San Francisco history. I had a flashback to being a kid this week. I was down in the Mission and happened to be walking by Lucca’s Delicatessen when I saw in the window a box of Bugia cookies. Alfred Podesta was my godfather and my mother couldn’t have picked a worse man to help me be brought up right. Uncle Al was a bohemian of sorts who hung out with friends such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Benny Bufano, Allen Ginsburg, Tippy Hedren and god knows who else sipping cocktails at Vesuvio’s and probably philosophizing late into the nights before leaving for his apartment on Greenwich street.Alfred Podesta was my godfather and my mother couldn’t have picked a worse man... more

Today, I was star-stucked. I saw Gary Fisher on the same street+ bike lane as me.
He looked marvelous, and was on his way (or from) the opening of a bike sharing program, here in San Francisco.

"They're super easy to ride, but they don't want to be on hills. And they're not going to be fast," said Gary Fisher, one of the inventors of modern mountain biking, who now runs a bike design company and built the tricycles being offered by Bike and Roll. "But if I'm going to the grocery store I don't have to edit my purchases. I can buy anything I want and it all fits on the bike."
The main Bike and Roll program costs $25 a month for individuals and $35 month for families, and allows members to borrow a tricycle or children's learner bike for up to an hour and 15 minutes. Members also can borrow a bike trailer along with a helmet and bike lock. From now until Christmas Day, the store is offering free monthlong membership in the tricycle-sharing program.

North Beach Art Walk sponsered in part by ArtSpan and The Telegraph Hill Dwellers
October 25 & 26, 11 am to 6 pm
Fivepoints Arthouse will be showcasing several works from local north beach resident artists, as well as work by our founders, Jason Bryan, Erik Parra, and Jessica Laurent. On Saturday, October 25, we will screen films from Telegraph Hill's own Judy Irving: ì19 Arrests, No Convictions,î is about a legendary Italian-American bar owner who redeems himself as a San Francisco Bay open-water swimmer, "escaping" from Alcatraz to the mainland; and a SNEAK PREVIEW of new sequences from the double-disc ìWild Parrotsî Collectorís Edition DVD, which will be released nationally Oct. 28th.
To help increase foot traffic in our neighborhood during the weekend of ArtSpan's Open Studios, and, to create an opportunity for more artists to participate, THD's Art & Culture Committee is organizing an art walk and inviting participation of all artists and merchants in North Beach.
Artists will be included on a map along with everybody participating in the Art Walk and/or the Open Studios. Regardless of whether you're planning to show your work/performance/poetry reading on the sidewalk, in your studio, or in a gallery, we would like to know about it and get you on our list of participating artists and merchants and have you on the map. At no cost to you, we will print this list and design a map and make it available to the public.
Businesses and storefront owners are lined up to showcase an artist's work or, lend their empty storefront window for that weekend.
This event is not limited to visual arts. If you're a poet, writer, or a musician, plan a reading or performance at any location in the hood and let us know.
For more information on how to get involved and to be included in the map please email historian@thd.org

While I agree in spirit, this is a total waste of time. I would like Supervisor Alioto to send her next paycheck directly to me because I am demanding a refund on my taxes.
Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier wants organizers of the San Francisco Italian American parade to boot Tommy Lasorda as grand marshal.
He's the former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who've had "an intense rivalry" with our hometown Giants for years and "nobody embodies that more than Tommy Lasorda," states the resolution.
The Giants aren't doing so great, it continues, and "Dodger fans are boastful and smug." Furthermore, there are "many other distinguished local Italian American athletes" like Giants pitcher Barry Zito "or even Joe Montana" who could do the important job of waving from a convertible.
The parade is scheduled for Oct. 12, so Alioto-Pier is trying to get the legislation passed at the board's next meeting, Oct. 7.
But is this really how the supervisors should be spending their time?
"We can't have Tommy Lasorda come to San Francisco for the Italian American parade!" Alioto-Pier said. "He's like enemy No. 1 right now. If you don't think this is important, you should move to L.A."While I agree in spirit, this is a total waste of time. I would like Supervisor Alioto... more

Captain’s Comments
Robbery vs. Burglary. We often hear from people, that they were
“robbed” or that their “house was robbed.” Sometimes after an
investigation, we realize that they were the victim of a burglary. The
difference is personal crime vs. property crime. In a robbery, one is
confronted by an individual(s) and by means of ‘force or fear’ something
is taken from them. The property can certainly vary in value from cash,
an iPod, shoes, clothing, laptop, or even a can of soda, just to name a
few. No weapon or actual force needs to be shown or produced; merely
causing the victim fear is enough to fit the crime category. A person
running by and snatching cash, a purse or other item would also fit
being a robbery by the force used to take the item without the victim’s
consent.
Burglary is a crime that takes place when someone enters a structure
with intent to commit a theft or other felony. Generally it takes place
in a commercial or residential structure where something is taken
without the owners consent. Entry can be made by breaking in, or even
through an open door or window. Force is not necessary to commit the
act. No owner needs to be present at the time of the crime. Auto
burglary takes place when someone breaks into a vehicle and takes
something.
We often talk about protecting your personal property. Recently a
neighborhood group asked how to prevent being a robbery victim. I made
the following suggestions:
My best advice to you and neighbors is:
· Have situational awareness at all times.
· Be especially alert when going into and out of your home and/or car.
· Keep keys ready in your hand or if you have pepper spray or a shriek
alarm,
keep it also at the ready, it is difficult to fish around for it while
being attacked.
· Report suspicious people in the area; let your neighbors know as
well.
· If a robbery does occur, try to get as much detail as possible
including: age, race, height, weight, hair, clothes, weapon and vehicle
including license plates.
