Five years ago, Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller traveled to Mexico to report on "The Death Train," a free but dangerous freighter that migrants board in an attempt to reach the US. During her trip she visited the Albergue Jesús el Buen Pastor del Pobre y el Migrante shelter in Tapachula, Mexico.
This center serves as a home for badly injured migrants, many of whom have lost an arm or a leg. The center gives them a chance to physically and emotionally heal themselves at a time when their hopes of a better life have been crushed.
Since "Death Train" has aired on Current, a number of people have written in asking for more information about the center, and what can be done to help the efforts to care for those who have been injured in their attempts to reach the border.
So we asked the shelter's founder and director, Olga Sánchez Martínez, and she said these were the center's goals for the new year:
1. Build a gym for exercise and physical therapy.
2. Continue with breadmaking and dressmaking workshops so people can train for new vocations.
3. Start a carpentry skills workshop.
4. Fix the leaky ceilings in the women’s bedrooms.
5. Build a fence to keep robbers away.

The Independent reports on complaints by charity groups about the wide society gap in Australia with the news of starving Aboriginal children and a lack of services to support the families.
"Little has changed, however. Indigenous people are still dying up to 20 years earlier than their white counterparts, and the mortality rate of babies born to Aboriginal mothers is twice that of other Australian infants."-Independent
The article says the news hasn't appeared in election campaigns, but are becoming more visible as politicians go on campaign tours across the country.
"Dan Baschiera, a veteran social worker, told the inquiry he had seen child protection staff fresh from years of study and training "burn up" after a few months working in Aboriginal welfare. He accused the Northern Territory government of starving the child protection system of funds."-IndependentThe Independent reports on complaints by charity groups about the wide society gap in... more

A short documentary I've put together about the artist Simon Haw. I felt a really strong connection with Simon when I met him and although I didn't fully understand everything he was telling me on the day of filming, after going through the footage, I began to interpret and infer things about his backstory and inner emotional life. I hope you find something interesting in here too.

Pepsi is sponsoring a project called Pepsi Refresh in which individuals and groups can apply for grants ranging from $5000 to $250,000 to be voted on nationwide. Projects are meant to improve US communities and fall into various categories including art, education, and health.
My project is to assemble a large book fair in the Western North Carolina area, specifically Jackson County, which encompasses Cherokee, NC. Upon receiving the $5000 grant I have applied for and with the help of volunteers, I will collect book donations to be distributed at a night of book-related festivities designed to instill a passion for and love of reading. The "Reading Festival" will also feature a speaker for parents on the importance of reading to children.
The details of the plan can be found on my profile on the Pepsi Refresh website. To receive the grant, I must be in the top ten ranking of the $5000 grant and though I am moving up steadily, still need all the help I can get to reach the top ten.
Please check out my profile and vote for mine and other worthy projects between now and the end of the month. You are alloted 10 votes per day and I appreciate every vote.
Check it out! Thanks!

We would all prosper if we had a service that would allow your typical volunteer to get paid per hour if they needed it. Perhaps this could be funded by donations and grants but also by people who think they are getting paid too much. (ie a Bank CEO wink wink.)
For example I have volunteered my services over the years at my children's school but it was tough for me with other obligations. But if I could have earned minimum wage the schools could have benefited from my business degree and art skills without hiring professionals at full cost.
This is just bubbling up in my mind.
It would be easy to implement this through existing webs such as Idealist and a donation site with modifications. It would need a little startup.
I have to go but am posting this.
What do you think? We would all prosper if we had a service that would allow your typical volunteer to... more

SOS Outreach, a youth non-profit organization in Colorado, will give about 500 kids a chance to ride at six resorts in Colorado this weekend, including Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. The program is designed to introduce kids to snow sports who may never have had a chance to get involved:
More Than 500 Kids Will Hit the Mountains This Weekend
December 10, 2009 (DENVER, CO) — The nation’s largest youth winter sports nonprofit entered its 16th season of service in Colorado. This weekend, more than 500 students in Colorado will hit the slopes at half a dozen ski resorts courtesy of SOS Outreach.
The students will pick up tips from professional instructors to enhance their on-hill experience, but SOS Outreach founder and executive director Arn Menconi said participants will become involved in much more.
“Our aim is to give an experience of a lifetime to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity,” he said. “At the same time, we use the ‘cool’ factor of snowboarding and skiing as a hook for a multi-year core value curriculum that inspires the students to become more involved in the community by giving back.”
SOS Outreach Global Program Director Jon Garrou said public service was a primary emphasis of the organization for not only the staff and student participants, but the broader community.
“Something happens when people see kids doing something to improve their community, and they want to support that,” he said, adding that last year about 750 adults pitched in with on-hill programs as well as service projects initiated by multi-year students. “Snowboarding may have been what brought everyone together, but it’s become something much larger and more meaningful.”
In all, SOS Outreach partners with 39 mountain resorts across nine states, Canada and New Zealand. Menconi said without the steady support of Vail Resorts, the organization would not have been able to expand.
Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz said the company was more than happy to partner with SOS Outreach.
“Working with SOS Outreach, we are able to give the experience of a lifetime to kids who may not have the opportunity,” Katz said. “SOS has taken the time to understand the best way to reach kids, and with the excitement of their first chair lift ride or their first turn, each of the SOS kids is an inspiration to every one of our employees who work with them. We hope the experience makes as big a positive impact on their lives as it has on ours.”
This year, 3,000 youth will enroll in winter sports programs with SOS Outreach, half of whom live in the Denver area. SOS Outreach will serve another 1,200 students in outdoor sports programs during the summer months, for a total of 20,000 participant days across its programs.

The American Civil Liberties Union has lost a quarter of its yearly donations after a major donor cut off $19 million in annual donations because of economic difficulties.
David Gelbaum, a wealthy California conservationist, said he was indefinitely stopping the donations that had made him the New York-based group's largest anonymous donor.
"For a number of years, your organization has received very substantial charitable contributions from me," Gelbaum said in a statement. "My investments in alternative, clean energy companies have placed me in a highly illiquid position as a result of the general credit crisis in the American and world financial systems."
Gelbaum also announced he was halting some $12 million in yearly gifts to the Sierra Club Foundation and about $50 million a year that he's been giving to an organization serving veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gelbaum has given a total of $389 million to the groups from 2005 to 2009.
Gelbaum says he hopes others will step forward and replace his donations.
The New York Times named Gelbaum in a story published in the newspaper Wednesday. Gelbaum had previously funded those organizations anonymously.
"While we're clearly disappointed that his desire to remain anonymous was breached, we remain eternally grateful for everything he and his family have done to advance the cause of civil liberties for all Americans," ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said.
Romero also called Gelbaum an American hero, "an unassuming man with a spectacularly generous spirit."
The ACLU is attempting to fill the revenue gap with funds from other donors, and over the past two months has raised a total of $23 million, spread over the next three years. The organization "will need to consider a number of budget reductions as well as the possibility of drawing down from our reserve funds if necessary," John Kennedy, a spokesman for Romero, said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Gelbaum's donation to the Sierra Club Foundation was earmarked for outdoor programs for military families, including a popular summer camp program for children of deployed veterans.
"That program will not be impacted in 2010, and then we'll have a year to figure it out," said Sierra Club national spokesman David Willett. "Obviously, we'll be looking for additional donations."
Gelbaum, a native of Minnesota, made his fortune working for hedge funds, where he used mathematical formulas to pick stocks and bonds.

During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, the Tap Project will once again raise vital donations and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs. For every dollar raised, a child will have clean drinking water for 40 days. All funds raised support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.
In 2007, the Tap Project was born in New York City based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.
Growing from just 300 New York City restaurants in 2007 to over 2,300 across the country in 2008, the Tap Project has quickly grown into a national movement. Restaurants, corporations, volunteers, advertising agencies, community groups, local governments and everyday diners participated to save millions of children’s lives.
